Over a period of 8 days, 32 haemodialysis out-patients were studied. Psychometric alien- and self-rating questionnaires were completed twice a day. The aim of the study was to produce a survey of the frequency and severity of depression in haemodialysis patients. It was speculated that the potency of haemodialysis in producing depression might be a helpful model in searching for biochemical factors in this disorder. Self-ratings showed short-term depressive changes in mood in about 15% of cases, which were not confirmed by alien-rating scales. It is concluded that neither incidence and severity nor longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles support a biochemical determination of depression in haemodialysis patients.

Chairman of an HSA discusses the problems that have occurred in the local planning process and the steps that can be taken to correct the problems.
Pesticides having a rapid and positive influence on the quantity of produced food, at the same time are involved in several side effects, often creating some hazard to human health and well-being. The authors show these facts in view of the possible entrance of these substances into the food chain, and present several actions or measures undertaken by various organizations, especially UN Agencies. The main emphasis is laid down on pesticides residues which remain in consumed food, based on the experience gained in different countries including Poland. From the toxicological or health point of view, it is important to know whether these substances interact with other nutrients entering plant or animal tissues or whether they remain on the surface, being easily removed before human consumption. Some effects of processing on decreasing the content of these residues in foodstuffs are also briefly outlined. Another aspect connected with the application of pesticides is their influence (mainly negative) on the nutritive value of harvested plants. In conclusion, the authors call for more attention and a complex approach in using pesticides for plant and animal protection as well as basic and applied nutrition, or health-oriented research along with training activity within national or rather international (e.g. UN Agency) programmes. They should be aimed at the optimal application of pesticides on modern agricultural practices with the main emphasis on their nutritional implication.

Soft tissue wounds were caused by penetration of a bullet through both thighs in 42 pigs, fired from N48, M70, M16A1 and FAL rifles at 50 meter range. Four comparable groups of wounds, consisting mainly of injured muscle, were examined. Primary debridement was carried out 5-6 hours following wounding, multiple muscle biopsies up to 40 mm sidewise of permanent wound channel were taken for HE and histochemistry. Primary contamination was traced using marker aerobic bacteria. Bullet velocities at impact and exit were measured and transfer of energy to liver tissue calculated when feasible. The condition of the bullet after exit was precised. The surgical estimation of tissue injury, the mass of excised tissue and microsections have served to evaluate the extent of tissue injury. For 22.5 cm mean channel length the most injury was caused by the FAL, followed by M16, M70 and M48 rifles in declining order. Local effects are ascribed to bullet tumbling, break-up and energy transfer of corresponding missiles. Correlation of surgical and pathology methods is discussed.
