Disseminated neonatal herpes simplex infection treated with levamisole. Report of a case.

Levamisole has been used to treat a patient with disseminated neonatal herpes simplex infection. The skin lesions and the convulsions disappeared completely 20 days after therapy. A trial to reduce the dose of levamisole resulted in a new episode of seizures and skin lesions. A similar relapse was observed at the age of 7 months, which resulted in control of symptoms by increasing the dose of levamisole. The patient has received levamisole for 20 months. She is now 29 months old and is doing well without levamisole, except for a slight motor deficity. If further investigations confirm the present findings, levamisole may well become a useful agent in the treatment of disseminated herpes simplex infection.

Pseudo-vitamin D deficiency rickets: report of a case.

A 19-month-old boy with repeated convulsions from the age of 7 months was found to have pseudo-vitamin D deficiency rickets. The convulsions were attributed to hypocalcaemia which is one of the main features of this type of rickets. High doses of vitamin D produced clinical, biochemical and radiographic cure.

Immunoglobulin E in erythema nodosum.

Twenty-two children aged from 3 years 6 months to 12 years with erythema nodosum (EN) were grouped according to aetiology into streptococcal, tuberculous, and those whose aetiology was undetermined. Serum IgE levels were determined in all by the radioimmunosorbent technique. Levels were higher (mean value 991 units/ml) in streptococcal EN than in those of the other two groups (mean value 68 units/ml and 97 units/ml, respectively) and healthy age-matched controls (mean value 60 units/ml). Increase of IgE levels in individual cases of streptococcal EN did not correlate with severity of the clinical manifestations characteristic of that group.
