Search for the production of single sleptons through R-parity violation in pp; collisions at square root (s) =1.8 TeV.

We report the first search for supersymmetric particles via s-channel production and decay of smuons or muon sneutrinos at hadronic colliders. The data for the two-muon and two-jets final states were collected by the D0 experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 94+/-5 pb(-1). Assuming that R parity is violated via the single coupling lambda'211, the number of candidate events is in agreement with expectation from the standard model. Exclusion contours are given in the (m(0),m(1/2)) and (m(x),m(v)) planes for lambda(')(211)=0.09, 0.08, and 0.07.

Search for R-parity violating supersymmetry in two-muon and four-jet topologies.

We present results of a search for R-parity-violating decay of the neutralino chi;01, taken as the lightest supersymmetric particle, to a muon and two jets. The decay proceeds through a lepton-number violating coupling lambda(')(2jk) (j=1,2; k=1,2,3), with R-parity conservation in all other production and decay processes. In the absence of candidate events from 77.5+/-3.9 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV, and with an expected background of 0.18+/-0.03+/-0.02 events, we set limits on squark and gluino masses within the framework of the minimal low-energy supergravity-supersymmetry model.

Dalitz plot analysis of the decay D(+)-->K(-)pi(+)pi(+) and indication of a low-mass scalar Kpi resonance.

We study the Dalitz plot of the decay D(+)-->K(-)pi(+)pi(+) with a sample of 15090 events from Fermilab experiment E791. Modeling the decay amplitude as the coherent sum of known Kpi resonances and a uniform nonresonant term, we do not obtain an acceptable fit. If we allow the mass and width of the K(*)(0)(1430) to float, we obtain values consistent with those from PDG but the chi(2) per degree of freedom of the fit is still unsatisfactory. A good fit is found when we allow for the presence of an additional scalar resonance, with mass 797+/-19+/-43 MeV/c(2) and width 410+/-43+/-87 MeV/c(2). The mass and width of the K(*)(0)(1430) become 1459+/-7+/-5 MeV/c(2) and 175+/-12+/-12 MeV/c(2), respectively. Our results provide new information on the scalar sector in hadron spectroscopy.

Heterogeneity of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression in human breast tumours.

An important determinant of cellular resistance to chemotherapeutic O6-alkylating agents, which comprise methylating and chloroethylating agents, is the ability of cells to repair alkylation damage at the O6-position of guanine in DNA. This is achieved by a specific DNA repair enzyme O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase. In this study O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression was measured in human breast tumours using both biochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase activity was then compared with known clinical prognostic indices to assess the potential role of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase in predicting the behaviour of this common malignancy. The application of both biochemical and immunohistochemical techniques was feasible and practical. Most breast tumours expressed high levels of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase. Immunohistochemical analysis showed marked variation in expression not only between individuals but also within individual tumours, and in the same patient, between metastases and between primary tumour and metastatic site. O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase activity in tissue extracts significantly correlated not only with immunohistochemical staining intensity determined by subjective quantitation, but also with measures of protein levels using a computerised image analysis system including mean grey (P<0.001), percentage of cells positive for O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase (P<0.001), and integrated optical density (P<0.001). O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression did not correlate with any of the established clinical prognostic indicators for current treatment regimens. However, immunohistochemical offers a rapid and convenient method for assessing potential utility of O6-alkylating agents or O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase inactivating agents in future studies of breast cancer treatment.

Search for leptoquark pairs decaying into nunu+jets in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We present the results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2+/-3.7) pb(-1) of pp* collider data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe no evidence for leptoquark production and set a limit on sigma(pp*-->LQLQ-->nunu+jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark (m(LQ)). Assuming the decay LQ-->nuq, we exclude scalar leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 98 GeV/c(2), and vector leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 200 GeV/c(2) and coupling which produces the minimum cross section, at a 95% confidence level.

Search for the scalar top quark in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, t-->b chi+1 and t-->blnu, no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ( t ), chargino ( chi+1), and sneutrino ( nu) masses.

Direct search for charged higgs bosons in decays of top quarks.

We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. With no evidence for signal, we exclude most regions of the ( M(H+/-),tan(beta)) parameter space where the decay t--> H(+)b has a branching fraction >0.36 and B(H+/--->tau(nu)(tau)) is large.

Separation of 48V and 48,49Cr in 7Li irradiated Sc2O3 target by liquid-liquid extraction.

A radiochemical heavy ion activation procedure was carried out for the simultaneous production of carrier-free 48V and 48,49Cr in 7Li ion irradiated Sc2O3 target, followed by the separation of the individual radio-elements in pure form through liquid-liquid extraction using liquid cation exchanger, di-(2-ehtylhexyl) phosphoric acid. Liquid anion exchanger, trioctylamine, was used to obtain extractants from aqueous acid solutions under different experimental conditions.

Macular hole surgery with silicone oil.

PURPOSE: Macular hole surgery usually involves gas tamponade which necessitates a variable period of postoperative posturing in a face-down position. A number of patients find this difficult or impossible for medical or social reasons. This study reviews our experience of macular hole surgery using silicone oil tamponade with no restriction of posturing. METHODS: Sixteen consecutive cases of macular hole (stage III/IV) surgery where silicone oil was used for tamponade were reviewed. Group A patients were unable for medical or social reasons to maintain a face-down posture and Group B patients had previous failed surgery with gas tamponade. RESULTS: Anatomical closure of hole was achieved in 81% (13/16) of all cases and 88% (7/8) of cases with no previous surgery (Group A) with a mean follow-up of 7.5 months (range 4-24 months). Mean visual improvement (log(MAR) value of visual acuity) for Group A and Group B were 0.41 and 0.03, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The success rate of macular hole surgery using silicone oil as tamponade, in cases with no previous surgery, is comparable to that achieved when gas is used as tamponade. Although good anatomical success can be achieved in cases with previous failed surgery, the visual outcome is less rewarding. Silicone oil is an alternative to gas tamponade for macular hole surgery in patients who are unable or unwilling to posture. However, it has to be borne in mind that silicone oil tamponade is not without risks.

Formal and informal care for people with dementia: factors associated with service receipt.

Details of service receipt by 132 people diagnosed with dementia and their carers were collected in South London (boroughs of Lewisham, Camberwell, Southwark and Croydon), a geographical area served by several health and social care providers. The data collected included the Caregiver Activity Survey, which details the informal care given. This paper reports the formal and informal services received by the people with dementia at entry to the study. The amount of time spent on specific caring tasks by all informal carers of people with dementia averaged seven hours per week, but was significantly higher for co-resident carers, even when controlling for the level of dependency of the person cared-for. The odds ratios of receipt of formal services are given, according to where people were living: in the community or residential care, with co-resident carers or alone.

177Lu labelled polyaminophosphonates as potential agents for bone pain palliation.

Polyphosphonate ligands labelled with radioisotopes decaying by moderate energy beta emission have shown utility as palliative agents for painful bone metastasis. 177Lu (T(1/2)=6.71 d, Ebetamax=497 keV) has radionuclidic properties suitable for use in palliative therapy of bone metastasis. 177Lu was produced at a high specific activity and excellent radionuclidic purity by thermal neutron bombardment of a target prepared from natural Lu. Three polyaminomethylene phosphonate ligands, abbreviated as EDTMP, DTPMP and TTHMP, were synthesized and radiolabelled with 177Lu. Complexation parameters were optimized to achieve maximum yields (97-99.5%). All the complexes were found to retain their stability at room temperature even 14 days after preparation. Biodistribution studies of the complexes were carried out in Wistar rats. All the complexes showed significant bone uptake (6-6.5%/g in tibia at 3 h post-injection (p.i.)) with rapid clearance from blood and minimum uptake in soft tissues. These studies reveal that 177Lu complexes with the synthesized ligands have a potential use in palliative treatment of painful bone metastasis.

Safety and efficacy of low dose Escherichia coli enterotoxin adjuvant for urease based oral immunisation against Helicobacter pylori in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Escherichia coli heat labile enterotoxin (LT) at doses of 5 micro g or 10 micro g has adjuvant activity for oral immunisation in humans infected with Helicobacter pylori, but causes severe diarrhoea. This study was undertaken to establish a safe and effective dose of LT, to confirm the safety of recombinant urease, and to compare the immunogenicity of orally compared with enterically delivered urease. METHODS: 42 healthy adults without present or past H pylori infection were randomised to receive 60 mg recombinant H pylori urease in soluble or in encapsulated form, given with doses of LT ranging from 0 micro g to 2.5 micro g. Four oral doses were administered at day 1, 8, 29, and 57. Specific IgG, IgA, and antibody secreting cells were measured as well as total alpha4beta7 integrin positive lymphocyte responses. RESULTS: Enterically delivered urease was well tolerated and no serious adverse events occurred. Mild diarrhoea (one to four loose stools) occurred after the first immunisation in 50% (6 of 12) of the volunteers exposed to 2.5 micro g LT (p=0.06; paired t test, compared with baseline) but not in volunteers exposed to lower LT doses. Immune responses occurred in five (p=0.048; Fisher's exact test), one, two, and one of six subjects exposed to 2.5 micro g, 0.5 micro g, 0.1 micro g, and no LT, respectively. Significant CD4(+), CD69(+), and CD45RO(hi) responses occurred over time among alpha4beta7(hi) lymphocytes in volunteers receiving 2.5 micro g LT. Enterically delivered urease induced higher lymphocyte responses than soluble urease. CONCLUSIONS: The safety of H pylori urease is confirmed. Oral LT may conserve its adjuvant activity at low doses with minimal side effects.

Oral hypoglycaemic agent failure.

Type 2 diabetic patients initially respond satisfactorily to diet, exercise and oral hypoglycaemic agents (OHA), but a fraction of them acquires resistance to drugs, right from the beginning (primary OHA failure) or in due course of time (secondary OHA failure) and becomes insulin requiring ultimately. Poor diet compliance and deterioration of beta-cell function are major causes of OHA failure and annual incidence is 3 to 30%. Keeping in mind the benefit of organ salvage in diabetes, failure with OHA treatment should be detected earliest and necessary measures adopted as early as possible. Recognition, appraisal and assessment of total problem can help a diabetic to enjoy a normal life.

Ratio of isolated photon cross sections in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 630 and 1800 GeV.

The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (E(T)) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity absolute value of eta < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the E(T) range.

Search for new physics using QUAERO: a general interface to D0 event data.

We describe QUAERO, a method that (i) enables the automatic optimization of searches for physics beyond the standard model, and (ii) provides a mechanism for making high energy collider data generally available. We apply QUAERO to searches for standard model WW, ZZ, and t t macro production, to searches for these objects produced through a new heavy resonance, and to the first direct search for W'-->WZ. Through this interface, we make three data sets collected by the D0 experiment at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV publicly available.

Enhanced accumulation of coronavirus defective interfering RNA from expressed negative-strand transcripts by coexpressed positive-strand RNA transcripts.

Expression of negative-strand murine coronavirus mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) defective interfering (DI) RNA transcripts in MHV-infected cells results in the accumulation of positive-strand DI RNAs (M. Joo et al., 1996, J. Virol. 70, 5769-5776). However, the expressed negative-strand DI RNA transcripts are poor templates for positive-strand DI RNA synthesis. The present study demonstrated that DI RNA accumulation from the expressed negative-strand DI RNA transcripts in MHV-infected cells was enhanced by the coexpression of complementary RNA transcripts that correspond to the 5' region of positive-strand DI RNA. The positive-strand RNA transcripts corresponding to the 5' end-most 0.7-2.0 kb DI RNA had a similar enhancement effect. The coexpressed positive-strand RNA transcripts lacking the leader sequence or those containing only the leader sequence failed to demonstrate this enhancement effect, demonstrating that the presence of the leader sequence in the coexpressed positive-strand RNA transcripts was necessary, but not sufficient, for the enhancement of DI RNA accumulation from the coexpressed negative-strand DI RNA transcripts. Negative-strand DI RNA transcripts that were coexpressed with the partial-length positive-strand RNA transcripts were no more stable than those expressed alone, suggesting that a higher stability of the expressed negative-strand RNA transcripts was an unlikely reason for the higher DI RNA accumulation in cells coexpressing two complementary DI RNA transcripts. Sequence analyses unexpectedly demonstrated that the leader sequence of the majority of accumulated DI RNAs switched to helper virus derived leader sequence, suggesting that enhancement of DI RNA accumulation was mediated by the efficient utilization of helper virus derived leader sequence for DI RNA synthesis. Furthermore, our data suggested that this leader switching, a type of homologous RNA-RNA recombination, occurred during positive-strand DI RNA synthesis and that MHV positive-strand RNA synthesis mechanism may have a preference toward recognizing double-stranded RNA structures over single-stranded negative-strand RNA to produce positive-strand DI RNAs.
