Systolic motion of the left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW) was studied by M-mode and long-axis two-dimensional echocardiography in 35 patients (pts) with secundum type of atrial septal defect (ASD), comparing with that of 19 surgically closed ASD (post ASD), 27 with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), 15 with old anteroseptal myocardial infarction (a-s MI) and 28 normal subjects. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Excursion of LVPW (PWE) was significantly increased in the pts with ASD compared with normal subjects (P less than 0.001), but there was no significant difference in PWE between the pts with ASD and the pts with HCM or a-s MI. 2) Mean systolic posterior wall velocity (MPWVs) was significantly decreased in the pts with ASD compared with the pts with HCM (p less than 0.05). However, no significant difference could be found in MPWVs between the pts with ASD and a-s MI or normal subjects. 3) End-systolic thickening of LVPW was significantly increased in the pts with ASD compared with normal subjects (p less than 0.05), the pts with a-s MI (p less than 0.05) and the pts with post ASD (p less than 0.01), except for the pts with HCM. There was a significant difference in % end-systolic thickness of lVPW between the pts with ASD and the pts with a-s MI or post ASD (p less than 0:05). 4) Mid-systolic thickening and % mid-systolic thickening of LVPW were significantly increased in the pts with ASD compared with normal subjects, the pts with a-s MI, the pts with post ASD and the pts with HCM (p less than 0.01). This characteristic mid-systolic bulging of LVPW in the pts with ASD was coincident with early-systolic anterior motion of IVS. 5) Basal portion of LVPW indicated the marked inward contraction during end-systole in 30 of 35 pts (86%) with ASD. In these 30 pts, association of mitral valve (MV) prolapse was observed. 6) Following surgical closure of ASD in 19 pts, MV prolapse disappeared following normalization of excessive endsystolic contraction of the LVPW in 16 pts (functional MV prolapse). In 3 pts, however, posterior MV showed multiple abnormal echoes, indicating MV prolapse or mitral regurgitation (organic MV prolapse). In conclusion, these results suggested that mid-systolic bulging of LVPW in ASD is compensatory reaction for systolic anterior IVS motion, and that mechanism of MV prolapse in ASD is related to abnormal left ventricular geometry due to excessive inward contraction of basal portion of LVPW during end-systole.
The structure of tetraheme cytochrome c3 isolated from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki has been determined at 2.5 A resolution by an X-ray diffraction method. Protein phases were computed by the multiple isomorphous replacement method using the native and four heavy atom derivatives, anomalous scattering measurements of the latter being considered. The mean figure of merit was 0.77. Four heme groups are exposed on the surface of the molecule. There are some short helical segments in the polypeptide chain, and hair-pin turns are often observed at glycine and alanine residues.
Spatial electrocardiography can express the spatial characteristics of electromotive forces of the heart quantiatively. The pattern of the sequential changes of these spatial characteristics of the cardiac vectors also provides important diagnostic informations. Accordingly, spatial electrocardiography is considered to be useful in clinical cardiology in association with conventional electrocardiography and vectorcardiography.

The molecular structure of Taka-amylase A, an alpha-amylase from Aspergillus oryzae, has been studied at 6 A resolution by X-ray diffraction analysis. The electron density map showed a non-crystallographic three-fold screw arrangement of the molecules in the crystal. The molecule is an ellipsoid with approximate dimensions of 80 x 45 x 35 A and contains a hollow which may correspond to the active center. The inhibitor molecules bind to Taka-amylase A at four different sites, one of which is located in the hollow of the enzyme. The probable position of a thiol group is discussed in connection with heavy atom binding.
Studies were made to develop the method for rapid determination of radioactive and stable cobalt in a single specimen of marine biological materials. The sample was dried, ashed, and dissolved in acid. The cobalt was extracted with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol benzene and determined by absorptiometry on the benzene phase. Then, the organic solution was evaporated to dryness, and the residue was treated with nitric-perchloric acid mixture to decompose any organic matter, and taken up with hydrochloric acid. The cobolt was extracted from the solution with TIO A-toluene, and the radioactive cobalt was determined by liquid scintillation counting on the toluene phase. Examinations were made on the chemical yield and on the decontamination factor of the fission product nuclides. Analysis were made on the marine biological samples of Urazoko Bay, Fukui prefecture. Agreement of the radioactive cobalt data between that by the present method and that by Ge(Li) gamma ray spectometry was good. Also, the stable cobalt value by the present method agreed well with that by neutron activation analysis method.
Two crystalline forms of cytochrome c3 isolated from two strains of Desulfovibrio vulgaris, Miyazaki, tentatively designated as D. vulgaris, Miyazki F and D. vulgaris, Miyazaki K, have been found. Both belong to the orthorhombic system, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), but have different cell dimensions; a=54.1, b=68.9 and c=35.0 A for D. vulgaris, Miyazaki F, and a=43.5, b=41.2, and c=62.9 A for D. vulgaris, Miyazaki K. The asymmetric unit of each crystal contains one molecule of cytochrome c3.
