It is established practice at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to provide a pre-operative visiting service for all patients with the exception of Day Patients. All patients are invited to visit the reception/recovery wards for a pre-admission discussion held each Sunday afternoon. Our aims are to prepare the patient psychologically and, where possible, to allay fears for the surgery they will undergo.
A small working group was set up in Wales to examine the extent to which nurses use research findings in their day to day clinical work. The group members acted as facilitators to their colleagues exploring with them the problems and issues affecting research utilisation in practice. A number of criteria are discussed which are necessary to encourage change and develop a critical approach to practice. Suggestions are also made for ways in which professional nursing may be developed within the overall context of future educational and management changes.

Since the 1960s there has been an awareness of a 'care-gap' when patients are transferred between hospital and home. In the United Kingdom, attempts to improve continuity of care have included the development of the role of the hospital/community liaison nurse. The liaison role has evolved in different ways and no systematic evaluation has occurred. This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study into the structure and process of the liaison role. It is suggested that the role is effective in enhancing continuity of care, but that modifications accompanied by educational and organizational changes would improve current practice.
A homozygote for the Rh complex .D. associated with the rare Evans antigen was identified and her family tested: .D./.D. can be clearly distinguished serologically from -D-/-D-. The immune antibody in the serum of the propositus reacts with all cells tested except homozygous -D-, CwD-, cD- and Rhnull cells.
