Histopathology on testicular involvement of leukemia with an emphasis on lymphatics.

The human testes in cases of malignant hematopoietic tumors, especially of leukemia, were histologically examined to characterize the mode of leukemic infiltration in comparison with that of malignant lymphoma. Materials were obtained from 56 autopsy cases, composed of 47 of leukemia, 7 of reticulum cell sarcoma and 2 of lymphosarcoma. Leukemic infiltration was confirmed in 43 (19%) of all leukemic cases and the pattern was divided into three types; diffuse, patchy and perivascular. A high grade infiltration was most common in lymphocytic leukemia. The testicular involvement was unexceptionally bilateral with occasional differences in the grade of infiltration, slight to moderate. There was no regional difference in incidence of leukemic infiltration in the testicular interstitium. A thin-walled canal located closely between the proper lamina of seminiferous tubules and the interstitial cell cluster was suggested to be lymphatics, which were extremely irregular in shape and occasionally did not have endothelium. Therefore human testicular lymphatics might not be a constant canal system, but rather akin to narrow tissue space. A network of argyrophilic fibers was pronounced in the lesion of leukemic infiltration. The frequency and grade of an involvement of the testes in malignant lymphoma were lower and lesser than those in leukemia.

[The effect of intravenous prostaglandin F 2 alpha on the motility of the gastrointestinal tracts after major abdominal surgery (author's transl)].

TThe effect of prostaglandin F 2 alpha was studied clinically and electromyographically on the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and transverse colon in 20 patients by giving 2 hours intravenous drip infusion at 0.3 approximately 0.5 microgram/kg/min for 2 hours after major abdominal surgery. Folling results were obtained. 1. The motility of stomach and colon was least active than any other site of alimentary tract during 48 hours after surgery. This seems to be one of the most important causes of so called postoperative ileus. 2. Recovery from reflex inhibition of motility of the alimentary tract after surgery was seen in duodenum at first, and then in jejunum and ileum in order. It was proved that intravenous drip infusion of PGF 2 alpha at 0.3 approximately 0.5 microgram/kg/min for 2 hours had produced the increase of electrical activity in any site of gastrointestinal tract and subsequently brought about increasing of propulsive movement. The effect of PGF 2 alpha is proportional to its concentration. 4. tit was concluded that PGF 2 alpha could be administered most effectively by intravvenous drip infusion at 0.5 microgram/kg/min 3 times daily for 3 days after surgery for the satisfactory recovery from the postoperative ileus, and no appreciable side effect was observed.

Changes in vascular permeability in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats studied with peroxidase as a tracer.

Cerebrovascular permeability in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) at various ages was histologically studied using horseradish peroxidase as a tracer and such was related to the cerebrovascular lesions in the animals. An increase in permeability was demonstrated in the brain of SHR, particularly in those animals with an extremely high blood pressure. Increased cerebrovascular permeability occurred in some animals without any organic vascular change or severe parenchymal changes, although edema was present. Histologically, the SHR brain with an increase in permeability showed mild focal edema, rarefaction of tissue and necrosis with cyst formation. Thus a transitional progress was evident. Localization of the increase in permeability corresponded well with the predilection sites of cerebrovascular lesions in SHR. Constrictions and dilatations of intracerebral arterioles and small arteries were also demonstrated by the peroxidase method, and the dilated arterial walls did reveal a darker staining. From these results it is strongly suggested that certain cerebrovascular lesions, especially necrosis with cyst formation in SHR are sequelae of the increased cerebrovascular permeability caused by a chronic hypertensive state.

Bioconversion of ribostamycin (SF-733). II. Isolation and structure of 3-N-acetylribostamycin, a microbiologically inactive product of ribostamycin produced by Streptomyces ribosidificus.

The isolation and structure determination of 3-N-acetylribostamycin, a microbiologically inactive derivative, produced enzymatically from ribostamycin by Streptomyces ribosidificus is described. The location of the acetyl group was established by mass and NMR spectrometry of the new compound and its derivatives, and by optical rotation studies conducted on N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-deoxystreptamine. The latter compound was obtained by partial acid hydrolysis of tri-N-ethoxycarbonyl-N-acetylribostamycin.

Malignant mixed tumor of the liver: report of a case and a review of the literature.

Malignant mixed tumor of the liver seen in a 4 year old girl was reported. Progressive hepatomegaly, jaundice, anemia, and extraordinarily high level of serum total cholesterol were noted clinically. Postmortem examination had disclosed that most part of the tumor was occupied by fibrosarcomatous cell growth admixed with rhabdomyosarcomatous component. In addition, carcinomatous component was distinctly recognized in a restricted part of the liver tumor. Previous reports on malignant mixed tumor of the liver were reviewed and it was emphasized that the histological diagnosis of malignant hepatic mixed tumor must be cautiously followed Edmondson's criteria; which requires existence of both epithelial and mesenchymal components of neoplastic nature and malignancy of either or both components in a hepatic tumor.
