Antalgic scoliosis due to nonosteogenic fibroma of the L1 neural arch: report of a case.

A case of nonosteogenic fibroma of the neural arch associated with scoliosis is reported. The unusual location of the neoplastic lesion and its close relationship with the lateral deviation of the spine are discussed. The necessity for accurate, early etiologic diagnosis is stressed. Early resection of the lesion led to resolution of the spinal curvature and pain.

[Studies on the development and therapy of scoliosis].

Inadequately treated cases of scoliosis with deterioration were studied. Biomechanics and pathology are discussed. It has been observed that permanent lateral deviation of the vertebral column continues irreversibly if not treated in time. A study of the evolution of scoliosis in relation to vertebral growth is reported. It is followed by a description of therapeutic management based on fundamental factors: --aetiology, the severity of the deformity, bone age and potential deterioration. A series of cases treated conservatively and by surgical fixation is illustrated.

[Role of computerized tomography in the pre-second look re-staging of neoplasms of the ovary].

Twenty-five patients with ovarian carcinoma who had been operated and treated with chemotherapy underwent clinical examination and CT before reintervention (second-look laparotomy) to detect the presence of eventual recurrences. The prediction of recurrence based on CT and clinical findings was compared with the surgical findings at reintervention. CT proved to be more accurate than clinical examination in detecting recurrences; this was especially true for masses in the abdominal cavum, with the exception of small peritoneal nodules. The authors suggest the use of CT for staging the patients candidate to reintervention. This might help to avoid reintervention in patients with persistent disease and to plan treatment.

[Desmoid tumor of the abdominal wall. Echographic and CT aspects].

Desmoid tumors are rare tumors of the anterior abdominal wall. They are easily accessible to sonography and computed tomography because of their superficial situation. We must know the signs which can call up this diagnosis, particularly sonographic signs. We report one case with usual radiologic aspects of these tumors.

[Findings on total hydroxyproline excretion in patients with scoliosis].

Variations in the metabolism of collagen of patients with idiopathic scoliosis were studied by measuring the quantity of total hydroxyproline excreted in the urine in 24 hours. Results were correlated with the degree of deviation and the degree of rapid vertebral growth. From the results a hypothesis can be formulated that scoliosis is caused by altered metabolism of connective tissue with increased destruction of collagen demonstrated by the increased excretion of urinary hydroxyproline.

[A rare case of psychogenic scoliosis].

A case is reported of non-structural lateral deviation of the spine thought to be of psychogenic origin and classified as so-called hysterical scoliosis. Unusual features are its great rarity and the fact that rotation of the vertebral bodies, the costal gibbus and the lateral deviation are all spontaneously reversible with suitable treatment. Essentially the latter comprised psychotherapy and physiotherapy. Passive correction by such methods as non-mobile corrective corsets or plaster jackets are contra-indicated. Relapses in this type of patient are frequent. Periodic follow-up is essential.

[Non-invasive dynamic studies of the cervico-thoraco-brachial pathway. Anatomo-clinical correlative study].

Based on a computer assisted analysis of the anatomic and biomechanic features of 200 subjects, the authors propose a dynamic approach to the exploration of the cervico-thoraco-brachial pathway. Results are given for 70 healthy and diseased subjects. Ultrasonic evaluations of the arterial component, dynamic echography of the axillo-subclavian venous component, electrophysiology including conventional electromyography, somesthesic and motor evoked potentials, and advanced imagery provide a panel of complementary diagnostic techniques.
