The role of cryotherapy in the management of early lesions of retinoblastoma.

Cryotherapy alone has destroyed as isolated retinoblastoma lesion in the fellow eye of a proven case of retinoblastoma. Follow-up for 14 months revealed no evidence of recurrence. Literature review has shown that cryotherapy has unique advantages in the treatment of retinoblastomas.

Eosinophilic granuloma of orbit.

Three cases of orbital eosinophilic granuloma are reported. In all 3 the diagnosis was established histologically. In the follow-up period, ranging between 5 and 20 years, the disease has taken a benign course; incomplete surgical removal in 2 of the patients and radiation of the lesion in one have been equally effective in promoting healing. The first mode of therapy may be preferable in the region of orbit in order to avoid damage to the globe or optic nerve.

Childhood blindness in Lebanon.

A survey in the Lebanese schools for the blind revealed that 77% of childhood blindness in the country was genetically determined. Two thirds of the hereditary blindness cases were due to autosomal recessive conditions; the high frequency of consanguineous marriages in Lebanon was the underlying cause of this finding. There is marked similarity in the etiology of childhood blindness in Cyprus and Lebanon, for both countries are somewhere between the highly developed countries.
