Bright diode laser light source.

A simplified multiwavelength prototype of an axially symmetric diode laser device based on stacks made of single emitters has been made, and the performance of the device has been demonstrated experimentally. The results verify that kilowatt-level light power can be focused into a circular spot with a 1/e2 diameter of 360 microm, a focal length of 100 mm, and a numerical aperture of 0.24, thus producing an average power density in excess of 10 kW/mm2 and a brightness of 6x10(10) W m-2 sr-1. The experiments also predict that it will be possible to increase these values to more than 60 kW/mm2 and 3x10(11) W m-2 sr-1.

Detection of high-temperature water vapor at 940 nm with vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser was used to study the absorption of water vapor in the 940 nm region. Measurements for several absorption lines within the 2 v1 + V3 vibrational band were performed. Line strengths at room temperature and in a heated absorption cell over the temperature range of 420-970 K were obtained. The line strength values were in good agreement with simulations based on the values of the HITRAN 2004 database. The measurements also showed that water vapor transitions near 940 nm are suitable for sensitive temperature determination.

Compact stacking of diode lasers for pulsed light sources of high brightness.

A compact stacking architecture for high-power diode-laser arrays is proposed and compared with traditional stacks. The objective of compact stacking is to achieve high brightness values without the use of microlenses. The calculated brightness for a compact stack is over 300 W mm(-2) sr(-1), which is approximately 40 times higher than that of a traditional stack made of similar laser emitters. Even higher brightness values of over 600 W mm(-2) sr(-1) were reached in practice. A laser head was manufactured in which the light from several compact laser stacks could be fiber coupled or the light could be transformed to a highly uniform beam.

High power density beam from narrow diode-laser arrays in axial symmetry.

A multiplexing method based on narrow diode-laser arrays (DLAs) in an axially symmetric configuration is described. The use of submillimeter narrow DLAs improves beam quality considerably in the slow-axis direction compared with typical 1-cm-wide DLAs. The axially symmetric geometry is advantageous for efficient spatial, wavelength, and polarization multiplexing. With narrow DLAs and an axially symmetric geometry, a small circular focus with more than 10-kW/mm2 average power density is possible. Theoretical calculations and preliminary experimental results are presented.

Generation of uniform light by use of diode lasers and a truncated paraboloid with a Lambertian scatterer.

Uniform illumination was generated by use of a large number of diode laser emitters and a single nonimaging paraboloid with a Lambertian scatterer in the truncation plane. Laser light traverses a path toward the Lambertian surface and back by total internal reflection. An overall efficiency of 69% was demonstrated. Improvements that would increase the efficiency to more than 85% are suggested. The illuminated area is circular, with 14-mm diameter. The spatial nonuniformity of the beam profile is less than +/- 2%.

VCSEL based detection of water vapor near 940nm.

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) was used to study the absorption spectrum of water vapor in the 940nm region. Measurements were performed in ambient air at room temperature and in a hydrogen-oxygen flame over the temperature range of 1500-1800K. Several rotational absorption lines within the 2v1 + v3 vibrational band were measured. The absorption spectra were well resolved, which demonstrates the feasibility of VCSEL-based spectroscopic measurements of water vapor at room and high-temperature in this spectral region. The results were in good agreement with the values obtained from the HITRAN-96 database.

Continuous monitoring of alkali metals in gas flows using direct-current plasma excited atomic spectroscopy.

A measuring instrument employing direct current (dc) plasma excited atomic line spectroscopy was developed for continuous measurement of alkali in combustion flue gases. Alkali compounds are dissociated by mixing sampled flue gas with a nitrogen plasma jet generated with a non-transferred dc plasma torch. The instrument can be used in two operating modes. The molar fraction is determined either by measuring the transmittance of the gas jet or by monitoring the emission. A tungsten halogen lamp and scanning monochromator are used for the measurement of the optical signals. Measurement of sodium and potassium has been demonstrated. The detection limits of the instrument are 50-70 ppb in the absorption mode. The detection limits are 2-3 ppb at 0.1 MPa pressure and 0.1-0.2 ppb at 1.0 MPa in the emission mode. The instrument is designed to withstand corrosive, particle laden, and pressurized flue gases at temperatures up to 1373 K.

Tunable external-cavity diode laser at 650 nm based on a transmission diffraction grating.

A tunable external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on a transmission diffraction grating in a Littrow mount has been developed and characterized. A single-transverse-mode diode laser at 650 nm is used in an external-cavity configuration in which the transmission grating is used as a dispersive element to select the single longitudinal mode. The transmission diffraction grating is made with electron-beam lithography. A tunable true single-mode cw output power of >20 mW is obtained from the ECDL. The total wavelength tuning range is 12 nm, and the mode-hop-free continuous tunability is >20 GHz.
