Functionalization of heteropolyanions-osmium and rhenium nitrido derivatives of Keggin- and Dawson-type polyoxotungstates: synthesis, characterization and multinuclear ((183)W, (15)N) NMR, EPR, IR, and UV/Vis fingerprints.

Reaction of K(10)[alpha(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61)] or K(10)[alpha(1)-P(2)W(17)O(61)] or [Bu(4)N][OsCl(4)N] in a water/methanol mixture, and subsequent precipitation with (Bu(4)N)Br provided [alpha(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61){Os(VI)N}](7-) and [alpha(1)-P(2)W(17)O(61){Os(VI)N}](7-) Dawson structures as tetrabutylammonium salts. Reactions of [(Bu(4)N)(4)][alpha-H(3)PW(11)O(39)] with either [ReCl(3)(N(2)Ph(2))(PPh(3))(2)] or [Bu(4)N][ReCl(4)N] are alternatives to the synthesis of [(Bu(4)N)(4)][alpha-PW(11)O(39){Re(VI)N}]. (183)W and (15)N NMR, EPR, IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry have been used to characterize these compounds and the corresponding [(Bu(4)N)(4)][alpha-PW(11)O(39){Os(VI)N}] Keggin derivative.

A strategy for the analysis of chiral polyoxotungstates by multinuclear (31P, 183W) NMR spectroscopy applied to the assignment of the 183W NMR spectra of alpha1-[P2W17O61]10- and alpha1-[YbP2W17O61]7-.

This paper describes the complete assignment of the 183W NMR spectra of the chiral polyoxometalates alpha1-[P2W17O61]10- and alpha1-[YbP2W17O61]7- in aqueous solution. These spectra display each 17 lines of equal intensity with a relatively narrow chemical shift distribution. The identification of signals is based on selective 31P-183W decoupling and recognition of particular sets of coupling constants for tungsten atoms around the lacunary site. Further assignment is obtained by 183W 2D-COSY NMR experiments. We demonstrate herewith a new way for the unambiguous assignment of 183W NMR spectra of polyoxotungstates without any symmetry elements or tungsten atoms in special positions. This way relies on the correlation of the magnitude of 2J(W-W) coupling constants with the geometry of oxo-bridges in polyoxotungstates. These results open the way to monitor interaction sites of chiral polyoxotungstates with organic ligands.

Production and reactions of organic-soluble lanthanide complexes of the monolacunary Dawson [alpha1-P2W17O61]10- polyoxotungstate.

The incorporation of lanthanides into polyoxometalates provides entry to new classes of potentially useful materials that combine the intrinsic properties of both constituents. To utilize the [alpha1-Ln(H2O)4P2W17O61]7- species in applications of catalysis and development of luminescent materials, the chemistry of this family of lanthanide polyoxometalates in organic solvents has been developed. Organic-soluble polyoxometalate-lanthanide complexes TBA5H2[alpha1-Ln(H2O)4P2W17O61] (Ln = La(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Yb(III)) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, acid-base titration, IR, 31P NMR, and mass spectrometry. The synthetic procedure involves a cation metathesis reaction in aqueous solution under strict pH control. A solid-liquid-phase transfer protocol yielded a unique species (TBA)8K3[Yb(alpha1-YbP2W17O61)2] with three ytterbium ions and two [alpha1-P2W17O61]10- polyoxotungstates. A centrosymmetric dimeric complex [{alpha1-La(H2O)4P2W17O61}2]14- was crystallized from aqueous solution and characterized by X-ray diffraction. ESI mass spectral analysis of the complexes TBA5H2[alpha1-Ln(H2O)4P2W17O61] shows that similar dimers exist in organic solution, in particular for the early lanthanides. Fragmentation in the mass spectrometer of the complexes from dry acetonitrile solution involves double protonation of an oxo ligand and loss of one water molecule. Low mass tungstate fragments combine into [(WO3)n]2- (n = 1-5) ions and their condensation products with phosphate. Reaction of TBA5H2[alpha1-Eu(H2O)4P2W17O61] with 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-bipyridine showed an increase of the europium luminescence. This result is explained by the formation of a ternary complex of [alpha1-Eu(H2O)4P2W17O61]7- and two sensitizing ligands.

A new organometallic heteropolytungstate related to [Sb2W22O74(OH)2](12-): synthesis and structural characterisation of the bis-{Ru(p-cymene)}(2+)-containing anion [Sb2W20O70{Ru(p-cymene)}2](10-).

The easy synthesis of [Sb2W20O70{Ru(p-cymene)}2](10-) by the reaction between the organometallic precursor [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 and [Sb2W20O70]14-, formed in situ, confirms the importance of the organometallic route to well defined ruthenium(+II)-substituted heteropolytungstates.

New organosilyl derivatives of the Dawson polyoxometalate [alpha2-P2W17O61(RSi)2O]6-: synthesis and mass spectrometric investigation.

In the field of functionalized polyoxometalates, organosilyl derivatives of polyoxotungstate constitute a special class of hybrid organic-inorganic system. The first organosilyl derivative of the monovacant Dawson heteropolyoxotungstate [alpha2-P2W17O61]10- was obtained by three different methods. The use of two organosilanes as reagents enabled the preparation of the functionalized polyoxometalate [alpha2-P2W17O61(RSi)2O]6- in good yield. Electrospray (ESI-MS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, and 183W, 31P, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy were used to characterize the composite systems. In several cases, ESI-MS analyses generated reduction processes which were compared to those related to [PMo11VO40]4-, the highly reducible Keggin polyoxometalate.

Enantioselective self-assembly of bimetallic [Mn(II) (delta)-Cr(III)(C2O4)3]- and [Mn(II) (lambda)-Cr(III)(C2O4)3]- layered anionic networks templated by the optically active (Rp)- and (Sp)-[1-CH2N(n-C3H7)3-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5]+ ions.

The ferrocenic ammonium (Rp)- and (Sp)-[1-CH2NR(3-)-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5] iodide salts with R=CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, were synthesized starting from the (Rp)- and (Sp)-[1-CH2N(CH3)2-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5] amines obtained in their optically active forms through asymmetric cyclopalladation of [C5H5Fe-C5H4CH2N(CH3)2]. 1H NMR studies of these planar chiral 1,2-disubstituted ferrocenic ammonium iodide salts in the presence of the (Delta)-(tris(tetrachlorobenzenediolato)phosphate(V) anion), [(Delta)-Trisphat] support the formation of specific diastereomeric ion pairs. Such intermolecular interactions can be related to the self-assembly of the two-dimensional optically active compounds [[(Sp)-1-CH2N(n-C3H7)3-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5][Mn (Delta)-Cr(C2O4)3]] and [[(Rp)-1-CH2N(n-C3H7)3-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5][Mn (Lambda)-Cr(C2O4)3]] starting from the resolved (Rp)- and (Sp)-[1-CH2N(n-C3H7)3-2-CH3-C5H3Fe-C5H5]+ ion associated to the racemic anionic building block rac-[Cr(C2O4)3]3- and Mn2+. Both enantiomeric forms of the networks behave as ferromagnets with a Curie temperature of 5.7 K.

Dawson type heteropolyanions. 3. Syntheses and 31P, 51V, and 183W NMR structural investigation of octadeca(molybdo-tungsto-vanado)diphosphates related to the [H2P2W12O48]12- anion.

The synthesis and multinuclear NMR characterization of mixed molybdenum-vanadium-tungsten polyoxometalates [P(2)Mo(x)V(y)W(18-(x+y))O(62)](n-) (x + y < or = 8) related to the Dawson structure are reported. The mixed species are obtained from the hexavacant anion [H(2)P(2)W(12)O(56)](12-) by successive condensation and hydrolysis reactions. The strategy of synthesis is mainly based on the steric control of hydrolysis reactions by the nature and the strength of the base, the relative kinetic lability of molybdenum and tungsten in hydrolysis reactions, and the conservation of the framework when vacant sites are refilled by new metal atoms. Rather good values of (31)P chemical shift variations can be predicted by an additive model taking into account the contribution of substituting groups, depending on their position in the structure. The influence of Mo/W and V/W substitutions on (183)W chemical shifts of the remaining W atoms has been discussed and seems to be preferentially passed on through corner junctions.

Functionalization of polyoxometalates: from Lindqvist to Keggin derivatives. 1. synthesis, solution studies, and spectroscopic and ESI mass spectrometry characterization of the rhenium phenylimido tungstophosphate [PW11O39(ReNC6H5)]4-.

Reaction of [Bu(4)N](4)[H(3)PW(11)O(39)] with [Re(NPh)Cl(3)(PPh(3))(2)], in acetonitrile and in the presence of NEt(3), provided the first Keggin-type organoimido derivative [Bu(4)N](4)[PW(11)O(39)(ReNPh)] (Ph = C(6)H(5)) (1). The functionalization was clearly demonstrated by various techniques including (1)H and (14)N NMR, electrochemistry, and ESI mass spectrometry. Conditions for the formation of 1 are also discussed.

Redistribution and fluxionality in heteropolyoxoperoxo complexes: [PO4[M2O2(mu-O2)2(O2)2]2]3- with M = Mo and/or W.

When peroxotetramolybdophosphate, [(n-C4H9)4N]3[PO4[Mo2O2(mu-O2)2(O2)2]2], denoted (NBu4)3PMo4, and its tungsten(VI) analogue, (NBu4)3PW4, are mixed in acetonitrile at room temperature, redistribution occurs with the formation of three mixed-addenda species [PO4[Mo4-xWxO20]]3- (x = 1-3). The temperature dependence of the phosphorus-31 NMR spectra of a 1 1 mixture and of the pure salts, (NBu4)3PMo4 or (NBu4)3PW4, shows that [MO(O2)2] species are in chemical exchange, as are the [MOp] units of certain heteropolyacids (e.g. H3[PMo12O40] x aq and H3[PW12O40] x aq). However, there is no chemical exchange between free phosphate and [MO(O2)2] species in these systems; but there is fluxional behaviour involving PMo2W2, PMo4 and PW4. This is attributed to the rapid equilibrium between isomers (PMo2W2) and to equilibrium between anionic structures with tridentate (mu-eta2:eta1-O22-) and bidentate (eta2-O22-) modes of coordination for the two peroxo groups of the [M2O2(mu-O2)2(O2)2] moieties.

Mixed-metal sandwich complexes [M(II)2(H2O)2Fe(III)2(P2W15O56)2]14- (M(II) = Co, Mn): synthesis and stability. The molecular structure of [M(II)2(H2O)2Fe(III)2(P2W15O56)2]14-.

Two new mixed-metal sandwich complexes [M(II)2(H2O)2Fe(III)2(P2W15O56)2]14- (abbreviated [M2Fe2P4W30], M(II) = Co(II), Mn(II)) were obtained at pH 3 by addition of M2+ to [Na2(H2O)2Fe(III)2(P2W15O56)2]16- (abbreviated [Na2Fe2P4W30]) without substitution in the alpha-[P2W15O56]12- (abbreviated [P2W15]) units. Their X-ray structures are reported. At lower pH, back conversion to [Na2Fe2P4W30] was followed by 31P NMR, electrochemistry and UV-visible spectroscopy. The preparation and the characterization in solution of the lacunary intermediate [NaCo(II)(H2O)2Fe(III)2(P2W15O56)2]15- (abbreviated [NaCoFe2P4W30]) is also described.

Solid state and solution 43Ca NMR of calcium peroxides involved in the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide by calcium hydroxide.

In order to get some insight into the mechanism of the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by calcium hydroxide, 43Ca NMR spectra of enriched samples of calcium peroxides and of their precursors have been studied in both solution and solid state. This study demonstrates that no well-defined peroxidized calcium species are formed in solution, showing that the catalytic role of calcium is likely restricted to the solid state. Most of the calcium compounds that could be involved in the catalytic process have been investigated with solid state NMR. The shift and quadrupolar parameters of Ca(OH)2, CaO2.8H2O and CaO2.2H2O2 are reported for the first time. These parameters are different enough to allow the quantitative analysis of a complex mixture of these compounds by NMR.

Enantiospecific synthesis of delta and lambda [Ru(bpy)(2)ppy](+) and [Ru(bpy)(2)quo](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, ppy = phenylpyridine-H(+), quo = 8-hydroxyquinolate): (1)H and (13)C NMR studies and X-ray structure determination of rac-[Ru(bpy)(2)quo]PF(6).

In this paper, we describe the enantiospecific synthesis and the complete characterization of the two hexacoordinated ruthenium(II) monocations [Ru(bpy)(2)ppy](+) and [Ru(bpy)(2)quo](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, ppy = phenylpyridine-H(+), quo = 8-hydroxyquinolate) in their enantiomeric Delta and Lambda forms. The corresponding enantiomeric excesses (ee's) are determined by (1)H NMR using pure Delta-Trisphat (tris(tetrachlorobenzenedialato)phosphate(V) anion) as a chiral (1)H NMR shift reagent. A complete (1)H and (13)C NMR study has been carried out on rac-[Ru(bpy)(2)ppy]PF(6) and rac-[Ru(bpy)(2)quo]PF(6). Additionally, the X-ray molecular structure of rac-[Ru(bpy)(2)quo]PF(6) is reported; this latter species crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group (a = 22.079 A, b = 16.874 A, c = 17.533 A, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 109.08 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees ).

Polyoxomolybdates functionalized with phosphonocarboxylates.

The novel, functionalized heteropolymolybdate [(O(2)CCH(2)PO(3))(2)Mo(5)O(15)](6-) (1) has been synthesized and characterized by IR and (31)P NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was carried out on Rb(4)KNa[(O(2)CCH(2)PO(3))(2)Mo(5)O(15)].H(2)O, which crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, with a = 10.146(2) A, b = 13.704(3) A, c = 20.577(4) A, beta = 94.88(3) degrees, and Z = 4. The title polyanion consists of a ring of five MoO(6) octahedra with four edge junctions and one corner junction. This nonplanar arrangement is stabilized by two phosphonocarboxylate groups that are bound via their phosphonate functionalities on opposite sides of the ring. As a result the two dangling arms with their terminal carboxylate groups protrude away from the molybdenum-oxo framework in diametrically opposed directions. The solid-state structure of 1 is preserved in solution on the basis of NMR. We also report on the synthesis and characterization of the isostructural derivative [(O(2)CC(2)H(4)PO(3))(2)Mo(5)O(15)](6-) (2).

Single-crystal X-ray analysis was carried out on K(2)[HOPMo(6)O(21)(O(2)CCH(2)NH(3))(3)].8.5H(2)O, which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma, with a = 14.118(2) A, b = 20.660(3) A, c = 12.191(2) A, and Z = 4; K(2)[H(3)CPMo(6)O(21)(O(2)CCH(2)NH(3))(3)].8.5H(2)O, which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma, with a = 14.1643(6) A, b = 20.8658(8) A, c = 12.2235(5) A, and Z = 4; and K(2)[HPMo(6)O(21)(O(2)CCH(2)NH(3))(3)].8H(2)O, which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma, with a = 14.092(3) A, b = 20.696(2) A, c = 12.199(4) A, and Z = 4. We also report on the synthesis and characterization of the isostructural derivative K(2)[H(5)C(2)PMo(6)O(21)(O(2)CCH(2)NH(3))(3)]. The four title polyanions consist of an RP (R = OH, CH(3), C(2)H(5), H) hetero group surrounded by a ring of six MoO(6) octahedra sharing edges and corners alternatingly. Three glycine molecules are each bound to two edge-sharing Mo centers via their carboxylate functionality on the same side of the ring. The central phosphorus atom is located slightly above the plane of the six molybdenums, and its terminal R group is on the same side of the ring as the glycines. NMR studies show that the solid state structures of the title compounds are preserved in solution.

Di- and tricobalt Dawson sandwich complexes: synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and electrochemical behavior of Na(18)[(NaOH(2))(2)Co(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)] and Na(17)[(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)].

The reaction of the trivacant Dawson anion alpha-[P(2)W(15)O(56)](12-) and the divalent cations Co(2+) is known to form the tetracobalt sandwich complex [Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](16-) (Co(4)P(4)W(30)). Two new complexes, with different Co/P(2)W(15) stoichiometry, [(NaOH(2))(2)Co(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](18-) (Na(2)Co(2)P(4)W(30)) and [(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](17-) (NaCo(3)P(4)W(30)), have been synthesized as aqueous-soluble sodium salts, by a slight modification of the reaction conditions. Both compounds were characterized by IR, elemental analysis, and (31)P solution NMR spectroscopy. These species are "lacunary" sandwich complexes, which add Co(2+) cations according to Na(2)Co(2)P(4)W(30) + Co(2+) --> NaCo(3)P(4)W(30) + Na(+) followed by NaCo(3)P(4)W(30) + Co(2+) --> Co(4)P(4)W(30) + Na(+). A Li(+)/Na(+) exchange in the cavity was evidenced by (31)P dynamic NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviors of the sandwich complexes [(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](17-) and [(NaOH(2))(2)Co(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](18-) were investigated in aqueous solutions and compared with that of [Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](16-). These complexes showed an electrocatalytic effect on nitrite reduction.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrids Based on Polyoxometalates. 5.(1) Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Bis(organophosphoryl)decatungstosilicates [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)((RPO)(2)](4)(-).

Organophosphoryl polyoxotungstate derivatives [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)(RPO)(2)](4)(-) (R = H (1), Et (2), n-Bu (3), t-Bu (4), C(2)H(4)COOH (5), Ph (6)) have been obtained by reaction of the divacant [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8)(-) anion with organophosphonic acids RPO(OH)(2) in acetonitrile. These new heteropolyanions have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, multinuclear ((1)H, (29)Si, (31)P, and (183)W) NMR, and X-ray crystallography. Crystals of (NBu(4))(2)(NEt(4))H[gamma-SiW(10)O(36)(C(6)H(5)PO)(2)] (anion 6) are monoclinic, space group P2(1), with lattice constants a = 16.489(4) Å, b = 14.016(3) Å, c = 18.542(8) Å, beta = 91.30(3) degrees, and Z = 2. The hybrid anion has a structure of virtual C(2v)() symmetry with two phenylphosphonate groups grafted to the surface of the divacant tungstosilicate. (183)W and (31)P NMR spectra of NBu(4) salts in DMF solution agree with the solid-state structure and the virtual C(2)(v)() symmetry.
