Convenient and efficient synthesis of functionalized oligopyridine ligands bearing accessory pyrromethene-BF2 fluorophores.

The synthesis of stable and highly luminescent pyridine-, bipyridine-, phenanthroline-, bipyrimidine-, and terpyridine-based ligands bearing one or two 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (bodipy) modules has demonstrated the advantages of three different protocols which have been adapted in light of the chemical stability of the alkyne-grafted starting building blocks and the chemical reactivity of the bromo-substituted starting materials. A classical method of condensation of aldehydes or acid chlorides with Kryptopyrrole has been used for direct linkage of a bodipy to the oligopyridinic platform. For the phenylethynyl-linked molecules, direct coupling between the bodipy-phenyliodo and the stable 4'-ethynyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, 6,6' '-diethynyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, 5-ethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine, 5,5'-diethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine, 6,6'-diethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine, and 5,5'-diethynyl-2,2'-bipyrimidine substrates is feasible and is promoted by Pd catalysts and sonication. This procedure provides the advantages of efficiency, versatility, and rapidity. A second set of experimental conditions is required to produce the 4-substituted pyridine, 3,8-disubstituted-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5,5' '-disubstituted-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine derivatives. Cross coupling of a bodipy-phenylethynyl molecule with the bromo-substituted partners takes place smoothly with the pyridine but with low yields in the other cases due to the efficient formation of the homocoupled diphenylbutadiyne bodipy compounds. A third convenient protocol enabled the preparation of these target molecules in a one-pot reaction where the deprotection of the alkyne was conducted in situ by a phase-transfer process with aqueous NaOH and with Et(3)BnN(+)Cl(-) as mediator and the cross-coupling reaction realized in the benzene phase with [Pd(PPh(3))(4)] as catalyst and CuI as co-reagent. The nascent acid was quenched in the aqueous phase. This method is much more efficient when a trimethylsilyl protecting group is used instead of a propargylic alcohol. The pyridino-bodipy bases were alkylated smoothly in good yields in the presence of methyl iodide. The photophysical and electrochemical properties for these new molecules have been investigated and are discussed in terms of substitution patterns of the bipyridine and terpyridine platforms. In the pyridinium salt 18, the fluorescence from the first singlet excited state at lambda(em) = 547 nm is totally quenched at the expense of a low-lying charge-transfer emitting state located at lambda(em) = 660 nm.

Photophysical properties of closely-coupled, binuclear ruthenium(II) bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) complexes.

The photophysical properties of closely-coupled, binuclear complexes formed by connecting two ruthenium(II) bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) complexes via an alkynylene group are compared to those of the parent complex. The dimers exhibit red-shifted emission maxima and prolonged triplet lifetimes in deoxygenated solution. Triplet quantum yields are much less than unity and the dimers generate singlet molecular oxygen with low quantum efficiency. Temperature dependence emission studies indicate coupling to higher-energy triplet states while cyclic voltammetry shows that the metal centres are only very weakly coupled but that extensive electron delocalization occurs upon one-electron reduction. The radiative rate constants derived for these dimers are relatively low, because the lowest-energy metal-to-ligand, charge-transfer states possess increased triplet character. In contrast, the rate constants for nonradiative decay of the lowest-energy triplet states are kept low by extended electron delocalization over the polytopic ligand. The poor triplet yields are a consequence of partitioning at the second triplet level.

Effect of the parent ligand on the photophysical properties of closely-coupled, binuclear ruthenium(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) complexes.

The photophysical properties of closely-coupled, binuclear complexes formed by connecting two ruthenium(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) complexes via an alkynylene group differ significantly from those of the relevant mononuclear complex. In particular, the energy of the first triplet excited state is lowered relative to the parent complex, because of the presence of the alkynylene substituent, while the triplet lifetime is prolonged, in part, because of extended electron delocalization. We now report that the triplet lifetime is also affected by the nature of the spectator 2,2'-bipyridyl ligands. Thus, replacing the parent 2,2'-bipyridine ligands with the corresponding 4,4'-dinitro-substituted ligands serves to decrease the luminescence yield and lifetime. With the corresponding carboxylate ester, the luminescence yield and lifetime are increased. Perdeuteration of the parent 2,2'-bipyridine ligands also leads to a modest increase in the luminescence yield. Such observations are indicative of electronic coupling between the various metal-to-ligand, charge-transfer excited triplet states. Temperature dependence studies confirm that these excited states are closely spaced and thermally accessible at ambient temperature. For some of the binuclear complexes, the quantum yield for formation of the lowest-energy triplet state is significantly less than unity.

Cation sensors based on terpyridine-functionalized boradiazaindacene.

A new class of highly luminescent dyes is reported. The characteristic feature of these compounds is that a terpyridine fragment is closely appended to a boradiazaindacene moiety in such a way that cation binding to the vacant terpyridine causes strong perturbations of the photophysical properties of the boradiazaindacene unit. In particular, these sensors are especially applicable to the fluorescence detection of trace quantities of zinc(II) ions in solution. The mechanism of the cation-induced quenching process has been investigated by a combination of electrochemistry, UV/Vis absorption, emission, and NMR spectroscopy. Highly luminescent arrays can be formed by doping transparent polymers with low concentrations of these new dyes. In such materials, the change in photophysical properties upon cation binding is so marked that "cation writing" becomes feasible under routine conditions.

Syntheses of pyridine and bipyridine frameworks combining dual fluorescent and magnetic probes.

[structure: see text] 2,6-Disubstituted pyridines, 6-substituted 2,2'-bipyridines, and 6,6'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines are readily prepared under mild conditions from 5-(dimethylamino)-1-naphthalenesulfonamide chloride (DANS-Cl) and chloromethyl-nitronyl nitroxide (CH(2)Cl-NIT) starting materials and adequately functionalized building blocks. The syntheses of the pyridine molecules bearing two radicals and a DANS fragment first required the attachment of the aliphatic radical onto an aldehyde-protected dansylated compound, followed by the construction of the second aromatic radical.

A concise modular synthesis of 2,5-diethynyl-3,4-dibutyl-thiophene-bridged back-to-back terpyridine ligands.

The efficient synthesis of soluble and rigid terpyridine-based ditopic ligands bearing an increasing number of 2,5-diethynyl-3,4-dibutylthiophene (DEDBT) modules has demonstrated the advantages of a single convergent strategy based on a double coupling in a final step of monoterpyridine building blocks carrying the adequate number of thiophene modules with a diiodo-substituted thiophene subunit. This protocol enjoys the advantages of both efficiency and versatility and requires pivotal intermediates, which were produced by a step-by-step implementation of monoterpyridine fragments with a key thiophene intermediate carrying an iodo function, a propargylic-protecting group, and two butyl-solubilizing fragments. One set of experimental conditions is required to produce all the intermediates and the final ligands. Oxidative dimerization of monosubstituted terpyridine skeletons bearing one or two thiophene substituents and a terminal alkyne function, in the presence of cupric salts and oxygen, afforded the homotopic ligands with a central dithienylbutadiyne spacer. Optical properties for the new oligomers have been investigated and are discussed in terms of effective conjugation length and pi-electron conjugation. Upon increasing the number of interspersed DEDBT units, a significant lowering in energy of absorption and fluorescence transitions as well as of the quantum yields is observed.

Aminomethyl-bipyridine bearing two flexible nitronyl-nitroxide arms: a new podand for complexation of transition metals in a facial or meridional conformation.

Transition metal complexes of 6-aminomethyl-bis[methyl-2-(4,5-dihydro-4,4,5,5- tetramethylimidazolinyl-3-oxide-l-oxy)]-2,2'-bipyridine, bpyN(NIT)(2), 1, have been synthesized and characterized by FAB-MS, UV-vis, FT-IR, and EPR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, and susceptibility measurements. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on all compounds giving the following crystal data: bpyN(NIT)(2), 1, triclinic, P(-)1, Z = 2, a = 10.7224(4) A, b = 11.0995(4) A, c = 13.1134(3) A, alpha = 114.101(9) degrees, beta = 97.476(9) degrees, gamma = 99.667(9) degrees; ZnbpyN(NIT)(2), 2, hexagonal, P3(2), Z = 3, a = 15.4545(3) A, b = 15.4545(3) A, c = 13.5594(3) A; NibpyN(NIT)(2), 3, hexagonal, P3(2), Z = 3, a = 15.2867(1) A, b = 15.2867(1) A, c = 13.7160(1) A; CubpyN(NIT)(2), 4, triclinic, P(-)l, Z = 2, a = 11.8640(4) A, b = 13.2023(4) A, c = 13.2661(5) A, alpha = 90.539(9) degrees, beta = 104.983(9) degrees, gamma = 113.252(9) degrees. The two radicals of the free ligand 1 are almost perpendicular to one another in the solid state, favoring a weak ferromagnetic interaction (J/k(B) = 8.8 K). The complexes obtained by wrapping the ligand around a single metal center gave rise to two different coordination schemes where the two radicals of 1 adopt a ON(3)O meridional (with Ni and Zn) or a ON(3)O facial conformation (with Cu), which strongly affects the magnetic and electronic properties (O accounts for the coordinated oxygen atoms of the nitroxide radicals and N(3) accounts for the tertiary amine). For 2, a model of a dimer has been used giving rise to a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the radicals (J/k(B) = -5.3 K). For 3, a very strong intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling has been found and estimated at J/k(B) = -230 K and J'/k(B) = -110 K between the nickel and each radical using an asymmetric model of a trimer. For 4, an unusual magnetic behavior is observed, dominated by antiferromagnetic interactions with a residual plateau at chiT = 0.63 emu.K.mol(-)(1). Molecular modeling at the CASSCF level is in keeping with an antiferromagnetic coupling of the radical bound with the Cu(II) in the equatorial position. The combined structural, electronic, and magnetic characteristics suggest that the use of a flexible molecule provide an additional approach for fine-tuning magnetic interactions.

Room temperature phosphorescence from a platinum(II) diimine bis(pyrenylacetylide) complex.

Room temperature phosphorescence has been observed in a synthetically facile Pt(II) complex, Pt(dbbpy)(CtriplebondC-pyrene)(2) (dbbpy = 4,4'-di(tert-butyl)-2,2'-bipyridine; CtriplebondC-pyrene = 1-ethynylpyrene), in fluid solution. The static and time-resolved absorption and luminescence data are consistent with phosphorescence emerging from the appended CtriplebondC-pyrenyl units following excitation into the low energy dpi Pt --> pi* dbbpy metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption bands.

Luminescent lanthanide complexes of a bis-bipyridine-phosphine-oxide ligand as tools for anion detection.

The Gd(3+), Tb(3+), and Eu(3+) complexes of a bis-bipyridine-phenylphosphine oxide ligand PhP(O)(bipy)(2) 1 (bipy for 6-methylene-6'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized. In acetonitrile solutions at room temperature, the Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) complexes show a metal-centered luminescence, indicative of an efficient energy transfer from the two bipy subunits to the Ln center. The photophysical properties drastically depend on the nature of the anions present in solution. In particular, addition of 2 equiv of nitrate anions to a solution containing the [Ln.1](OTf-)(3) leads to an 11-fold increase of the luminescence intensity for the Eu(3+) and a 7-fold increase for the Tb(3+) complexes. Similar effects are provided with Cl-, F-, and CH(3)COO- anions. UV-vis titration experiments were used to determine association constants for binding of, respectively, one, two, and three anions. Stepwise anion addition has also been investigated on the molecular level using quantum mechanical (QM) calculations for the Eu complexes. These calculations reproduce the experimental findings, especially if solvent molecule addition is taken into account. The X-ray crystal structure of the nitrate salt of the Tb complex, as well as QM calculation of a similar Eu complex, demonstrates the coordination of three nitrate anions in a bidentate mode and the step-by-step relegation of the bipy subunits in the second coordination sphere. These features give valuable insights into the mechanism of the overall light amplification process.

General Method for the Preparation of Alkyne-Functionalized Oligopyridine Building Blocks.

A large series of alkyne-substituted oligopyridines based on 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, or 1,8-naphthyridine substrates has been synthesized and fully characterized. The palladium(0)-catalyzed coupling of bromo- or chloro-substituted derivatives with (trimethylsilyl)acetylene proceeds readily in diisopropylamine under ambient conditions giving good yields of the corresponding alkyne-substituted substrates oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)SiMe(3). The terminal monoynes oligoPyC&tbd1;CH become available upon treatment with K(2)CO(3) in methanol. Stepwise homologation of the acetylene function by Cadiot-Chodkiewicz coupling of oligoPyC&tbd1;CH with (bromoethynyl)triethylsilane (BrC&tbd1;CSiEt(3)) affords, in good yield, the silylated diynes oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)(2)SiEt(3), from which the terminal diynes oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)(2)H are formed by treatment with aqueous methanolic alkali. Reaction of oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)(2)H with BrC&tbd1;CSiEt(3) yields the silylated triynes oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)(3)SiEt(3) in modest yield. Further homologation is limited by nucleophilic attack of n-propylamine at the C-2 carbon of the alkyne chain, giving rise to a mixture of cis/cis (48%), cis/trans (33%), and trans/trans (19%) enaminediyne compounds 21a-c. Glaser oxidative self-coupling of the terminal diynes provides access to ditopic bipyridine or terpyridine ligands oligoPy(C&tbd1;C)(4)oligoPy comprising a tetrayne spacer. Quantitative formation of air-stable copper(I) complexes is described for the 6,6'-substituted ligands. A single crystal X-ray structure of complex 22a shows that the two ligands are interlocked around the copper(I) center in a pseudotetrahedral arrangement, similar to the structure deduced from NMR and FAB(+) data. The synthetic methods reported herein represent a valuable approach to the large-scale preparation of alkyne-functionalized oligopyridines.
