[Nursing staff turnover: a study at a school-hospital].

The goal of this exploratory-descriptive study was to measure and compare nursing staff turnover levels at the University Hospital of São Paulo University. The population consisted of 255 nursing workers - 78 nurses, 20 technicians and 156 auxiliaries - who resigned from the hospital between 1997 and 2000. Turnover levels were measured by means of global indicators, admission and resignation, net replacement on the job and variation rates. Quantitative data analysis indicated a low nursing staff turnover rate at this hospital.

[Patient classification system: identification of the patient care profile at hospitalization units of the UH-USP].

This exploratory-descriptive study aimed to identify the patient care profile at the Hospitalization Units of the University Hospital-USP to support human resource allocation, to evaluate the nursing staff and to ground decision-making processes on nursing care organization and planning. In order to get to know the patients' care complexity profile, the patient classification instrument was used, developed and established at the Medical Clinic Unit of the UH-USP since 1990. The study results allowed us to evaluate the adequacy of the classification system used and provided information on the patients' care profile and the work load at each Hospitalization Unit, thus, supporting management decisions on human resource allocation, care planning and service organization in view of clients' demands.

[Perroca's patient classification instrument: construct validity analysis].

This paper starts from a research on the reliability and validity assessment of Perroca's patient classification instrument. Its purpose is to analyze the construct validity of this instrument, as well as to check its use in nursing management practice. Study participants were a hundred forty-one patients, allocated in Intensive Care and Hospitalization Units of a school hospital in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil. Several statistical techniques were used to show the construct validity of the instrument. Research results revealed the importance of all critical indicators, each of which has its own role in determining the patient's complexity degree in relation to nursing care. Therefore, the study showed that the instrument shows evidence of validity. Hence, it is useful for nursing management practice, as a guide to the patient's care needs as well as to the nursing team's workload.

[Assessing the inter-rater reliability of an instrument for the classification of patients--Kappa's quotient].

This study aimed to determine the reliability of Perroca's instrument model for classifying patients. Fifty patients randomly chosen were assessed by the nurses of the General Intensive Unit Care of a medical school hospital. Kappa's quotient was used to observe the concordance degree of the total scores by the nurses. The reliability analysis showed a Kappa between 0.68 and 0.90 with 95% of CI, showing a good concordance. Therefore, this study showed that this instrument model has drawn evidence of reliability.

[Expected and unexpected absence of the nursing team of a university hospital at the university of Sao Paulo, Brazil].

The objective of this exploratory-descriptive study was to identify expected and unexpected absences of the nursing team at the inpatient units of the University Hospital at the University of Sao Paulo. Data regarding unexpected absences of the nursing staff employees of these inpatient units were assessed on a monthly basis for the year 2000. The percentage of the expected absences regarding remunerated weekly time off, holidays and vacations corresponded to 19%, 3:9% and 8.9%, respectively. The survey of percentage of unexpected absences showed a variation among indices found in each unit, thus indicating the possibility of an excess workload in some inpatient units.

[Perroca's instrument for patient classification: reliability test for evaluators agreement--correlation].

The purpose of this research was to check the reliability of Perroca's instrument model for classifying patients, based on the particular needs of nursing care. This patients' classification instrument was applied in 50 patients randomly chosen by the nurses of the General Intensive Care Unit of a medical school hospital. Pearson's quotient correlation was used to analyze the concordance degree of the total scores by the nurses. The reliability analysis showed a high and positive correlation in relation to scores given by the nurses.
