Generalized synchronization of chaos in identical systems with hidden degrees of freedom.

We demonstrate generalized synchronization of chaos in a two-mode laser system. The total intensity of the laser output (the sum of the individual mode intensities) is used as the drive signal. This lumped variable transmitted to the identical response system does not generate identical synchronization. Generalized synchronization is observed instead of identical synchronization because of the hidden internal degrees of freedom.

Reversibility of liver failure secondary to metastatic breast cancer by vinorelbine and cisplatin chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: The development of liver metastases from breast cancer is associated with a very poor prognosis, estimated at 4 months median survival. Since treatment with many chemotherapeutic agents is relatively contraindicated, we assessed the safety, tolerability and potential efficacy of combination chemotherapy with vinorelbine and cisplatin (ViP). METHOD: Pilot study in 11 patients with histologically confirmed breast carcinoma, radiological evidence of liver metastases and serum bilirubin greater than 1.5 times the upper limit of normal. Patients received up to six cycles of cisplatin (75 mg/m2) every 21 days and vinorelbine (20 mg/m2) on days 1 and 8 of every 21-day cycle. Measurement of liver lesions was performed on CT scan every 8 weeks into treatment. RESULTS: The most frequently reported adverse event was myelosuppression. Other adverse effects included nausea, vomiting and mild neurotoxicity. Two patients died after one treatment with ViP, one of whom suffered an intracerebral haemorrhage that was possibly treatment-related. Improvement in liver function tests was observed in 10 patients, and mean time to normalization of bilirubin levels was 36 days. Partial responses were documented radiologically in 7 out of 11 patients treated. Median overall survival from trial entry was 6.5 months (range 11-364 days), with one patient alive 13 months from trial entry. CONCLUSION: Normalization of liver function is possible with ViP treatment of metastatic breast cancer, offering the potential to prolong survival. Phase II clinical trials of this regimen in this patient group should include measurement of quality of life in order to assess risk versus benefit.

Bursting dynamics of a fiber laser with an injected signal.

We study the effect of near-resonant optical injection on the dynamical behavior of an erbium-doped fiber ring laser. Our experimental results show that, in the presence of even a small amount of injection, the output laser intensity exhibits bursts spaced irregularly in time and with randomly varying amplitudes. A heterodyne measurement of the frequency dynamics of the laser suggests that this bursting is due to an irregular wandering of the laser frequency through the injection locking range. This interpretation is confirmed by a systematic analysis of a simplified rate-equation model in which the frequency wandering is modeled phenomenologically by means of a temporally correlated noise. A statistical analysis of the bursting events is performed, displaying satisfactory agreement between the experiment and the model. In particular, the interburst time distribution exhibits a well defined power law decay over a sizable time range.

Hilbert phase analysis of the dynamics of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback.

The nonlinear dynamics of a semiconductor laser with an optical feedback is studied using Hilbert phase analysis, which reveals interesting facets of the nonlinear dynamical behavior, including the formation and interaction of external cavity modes with increasing external feedback. Here we report measurements on two illustrative cases with very different dynamics; the laser is first biased just near threshold, and then far above threshold. We observe 2pi phase jumps at intervals that are multiples of the external cavity round-trip time, indicating the interaction and transfer of energy between external cavity modes.

Competition between two frequencies for phase synchronization of a chaotic laser.

Competition between two distinct driving frequencies to phase synchronize the intensity dynamics of a chaotic laser has been observed. The phase of the chaotic intensity signal is constructed using the complex analytic signal. Competing frequencies alternately show phase locking and phase slipping. Competition has been quantified by calculating the portion of time the laser phase locks to each of the driving frequencies and their average.

Measuring intense rotation and dissipation in turbulent flows.

Turbulent flows are highly intermittent--for example, they exhibit intense bursts of vorticity and strain. Kolmogorov theory describes such behaviour in the form of energy cascades from large to small spatial and temporal scales, where energy is dissipated as heat. But the causes of high intermittency in turbulence, which show non-gaussian statistics, are not well understood. Such intermittency can be important, for example, for enhancing the mixing of chemicals, by producing sharp drops in local pressure that can induce cavitation (damaging mechanical components and biological organisms), and by causing intense vortices in atmospheric flows. Here we present observations of the three components of velocity and all nine velocity gradients within a small volume, which allow us to determine simultaneously the dissipation (a measure of strain) and enstrophy (a measure of rotational energy) of a turbulent flow. Combining the statistics of all measurements and the evolution of individual bursts, we find that a typical sequence for intense events begins with rapid strain growth, followed by rising vorticity and a final sudden decline in stretching. We suggest two mechanisms which can produce these characteristics, depending whether they are due to the advection of coherent structures through our observed volume or caused locally.

Influence of stochasticity on multiple four-wave-mixing processes in an optical fiber.

In this paper, we present the results of a computational study of the dynamical evolution of multiple four-wave-mixing processes in a single mode optical fiber with spatially and temporally delta-correlated phase noise. A generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with stochastic phase fluctuations along the length of the fiber is solved using the split-step Fourier method. A good agreement is obtained with previous experimental and computational results based on a truncated-ODE (ordinary differential equation) model, in which stochasticity was seen to play a key role in determining the nature of the dynamics. The full NLSE allows for simulations with high frequency resolution (60 MHz) and frequency span (16 THz) compared to the truncated-ODE model (300 GHz and 2.8 THz, respectively), thus enabling a more detailed comparison with observations. A physical basis for this hitherto phenomenological phase noise is discussed and quantified.

Chaotic function generator: complex dynamics and its control in a loss-modulated Nd:YAG laser.

The complex dynamics resulting from electronic feedback of a laser's intensity are explored and characterized. Distinct stable and chaotic regimes can be elicited from the laser by tuning the bias of the feedback loop. An additional branch of the feedback loop, containing a derivative filter, provides access to new kinds of dynamics, including a more gradual transition to chaos. The whole feedback network together allows the laser dynamics to be selected from among a wide range of chaotic wave forms distinguished by statistical or spectral information. In other words, this laser system can be used as a tunable generator of chaotic functions.

Communication with dynamically fluctuating states of light polarization.

The fast, irregular, fluctuations of the state of polarization of light output from an erbium doper fiber ring laser are used to communicate digital information. The experiments illustrate the application of a dynamical encoding and information recovery scheme that is robust to perturbations of the communication channel, a standard single mode fiber. A fiber-optic polarization analyzer was used to measure and visualize the polarization dynamics at nanosecond time scales on the Poincaré sphere.

Chaos in a multimode solid-state laser system.

When a nonlinear crystal is placed within a multimode solid-state laser cavity, deterministic fluctuations are induced in the output intensity. In this paper, the results of our studies of the intensity noise in a diode pumped, intracavity frequency doubled Nd:YAG (neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet) laser will be presented. First, a novel technique to eliminate these fluctuations is described. Second, the observation of antiphase states in the laser output is discussed. These states are characterized by a cyclic periodic pulsing of the individual longitudinal mode intensities. Finally, the statistical properties of chaotic intensity fluctuations are characterized. It is be demonstrated that it is possible to accurately model the laser dynamics by a system of globally coupled, nonlinear oscillators.
