[Degenerative shoulder diseases--their differentiation and surgical therapy].

Degenerative shoulder diseases can be clearly differentiated from each other and from different ailments by careful recording of the case history, through clinical examination, and arthrography. Considerable therapeutic achievements have been recordable from operations on patients who had suffered for years. Eighty anterior acromion repairs had been performed with encouraging results by Juli 1987. Postoperative physiotherapy should be carried out with persistency and may last several months.

Combined Modality Therapy

[Significance of scanning electron microscopy observations on cellular reactions in the biological evaluation of endoprosthetic materials].

In a scanning electron microscopic study there are described the adhesion, spreading and formation of confluent monolayers from fibroblasts and epithelioid cells on Al2O3-ceramics and cobalt-basis-alloys in relation to vitreous carbon and glass. The morphogenetic reactions of cultured cells were not significantly different in pattern, behaviour and kinetics on various biomaterials. The cells adhered, spread, migrated and proliferated on the surface of biomaterials to be tested. This allows the conclusion that this implant material is compatible with cells. The variability of properties and susceptibility of cultured cells were discussed as a criterion for biocompatibility of implant materials in preclinical test.

[Possibilities of endoprosthetic joint replacement].

Nowadays arthroplastic operations determine the everyday work in the orthopaedic clinic. The good primary results show a distinct change of indications in favour of the artificial joint replacement. After a longer duration of implantation is to be reckoned with a failure quote of 10% and more. Here the problems of the durable anchoring of the prosthesis, the late infection and the exhaustion of the material are in the foreground. In the development of endoprosthesis in the GDR as carriers of the power the nickel-free cobalt-basis alloy Prothecast and as sliding partner the highly pure Hermsdorf aluminum oxide ceramic material were used as implant materials. These biomaterials best stood the test.
