[Cystosarcoma phyllodes].

From a total number of 31 patients with the diagnosis of cystosarcoma phyllodes recorded by the authors, in two thirds the benign and proliferating form of the tumour was involved, in one third a malignant type of tumour. In benign tumours it is sufficient to extirpate the tumour completely, incl. capsule of the tumour. In malignant forms radical modified mastectomy with revision of the axilla must be performed. When the histological findings have a high grading (non-differentiated anaplastic), adjuvant radiotherapy or a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy must be used. Dispensarization of patients with the diagnosis of cystosarcoma phyllodes is essential.

Ovarian malignancies in the Czech Cancer Registry.

This report is a summary of epidemiological survey of ovarian cancer in the Czech Socialist Republic (CSR) during the period of 1977--1985; the incidence and mortality data have been recorded since the sixties up to the present. In 1985 we also described the morphology types and calculated the estimates of lifetime risk. All conventional epidemiological indicators are discussed and the geographic variations and international comparisons are presented together with the known risk factors and survival. The data can be used for comparisons among countries with similar conditions.

Adolescent

Epidemiological aspects of childhood cancer incidence in Czech regions.

In this descriptive epidemiological report a total of 5100 childhood malignancies registered in Czech regions during the period of 1963-1985 was analyzed. The incidence of these tumors compared in years of this time period has been relatively constant, we did not find any significant changes in trends. That is why the average annual incidence rate, i.e., 10.8 in males and 8.7 in females per 100,000 sufficiently characterized the epidemiological situation in this respect. Those parameters allow, by knowledge of demographic prognosis, to estimate expected numbers of tumors in further years. The highest incidence occurred in boys and in the lower age groups of both sexes. All differences presented in this report were tested and were found to be significant. The percentage ratio of solid tumors, preferentially those of bone and skin of both sexes, and brain tumors in females in the period of 1976-1985, as compared to the period of 1961-1970, decreased, whereas there was a significant increase of systemic malignancies and soft-tissue sarcomas. Finally, the geographic differences of incidence are described, and the possible causes of the data presented are discussed.

Alteration of beta-2-microglobulin level in malignant lymphoproliferative diseases after a high dose of alpha-2-recombinant interferon.

A group of 10 patients with malignant lymphoproliferative diseases resistant to any standard therapeutical modalities were treated with a high dose of alpha-2-recombinant interferon (alpha-2-rIF). Alpha-2-rIF was administered at a total dose of 120 x 10(6) IU in a continuous infusion during 48 h. Two cycles of alpha-2-rIF immunotherapy were employed with an interval of 1 month in between each. Serum and urinary beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) were examined prior to alpha-2-rIF application and on days 2, 4, 6 afterwards. Alpha-2-rIF treatment induced an increase in serum B2M as noted on day 2 followed by a decline to below the normal range. The initial increased value was significantly higher as compared to either the pretreatment value or the normal physiological range. The reduced B2M serum level was protracted and lasted until the second cycle of treatment. Similar but not so great changes in B2M serum values were noted during the second application of alpha-2-rIF. The changes of B2M level in the urine, although less convincing, mimic those observed in the serum. The present results confirmed the biological activity of alpha-2-rIF in malignant lymphoproliferative diseases.

Comparison of some environmental pollutants on the incidence of digestive tract malignancies mapped in district Blansko (Czechoslovakia).

The basic economic and geographic regionalization and the rate of environmental pollutants in the investigated district were firstly defined. The incidence of digestive tract malignancies in years 1976-1984 was compiled with the aid of a computer, and modelling by isolines a as graphic representation was used. The state of environment is compared with the geographical places of maximal and minimal incidence of the cancer types studied. The combined load of environmental pollution (above all water sources) seems to correlate considerably with high cancer incidence. The study will continue in view of accurate verification of these results.

Does lymphography promote dissemination of tumorous disease?

In two groups of patients with malignant melanoma on the lower limb and with metastases in the inguinal lymph nodes the authors followed the time of appearance of lung metastases and the survival time. In one group lymphography of the extremity was performed, the other one served as a control. Tabulated time data were mutually evaluated between the two groups by the parametric T-test and with the aid of the nonparametric Me-test. No significant difference was found between the two groups, not even with 20% probability. Thus, lymphography is not likely to have an influence on deissemination of malignant melanoma.
