[Rett's syndrome in the Spanish population].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Rett syndrome was described in 1966 and became known through the English medical literature in 1983. There are typical and atypical forms. The objective of this study was to record the cases diagnosed in Spain and discover their clinical characteristics in order to describe its phenotype and geographical distribution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We know of 207 cases and have obtained the records of 168 of these patients. A protocol and data collection programme has been developed giving the criteria for inclusion, and data which support or exclude this. Data collection was by post and the data for identification were the date of birth and the initials of the name and two surnames. With these variables, double-registering of patients was almost impossible. A statistical study with descriptive analysis and a study of continuous and alternating variables was immediately done. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results gave the main characteristics, the differences between typical and atypical cases and a comparative study of variables. It has given clinical data which may be useful for prognosis of the condition in the future.

[Remission of rheumatoid arthritis. Apropos of 32 case reports].

The remission of rheumatoid arthritis is a generally accepted concept, although few studies have been performed in this area. The authors report 32 cases of rheumatoid arthritis in remission in a population of 300 patients (10.7%). These cases of rheumatoid arthritis did not present any distinctive signs in comparison with the other patients. The remission was obtained an average of 6.5 years after the onset of the disease and has lasted, to date, for an average of 2.55 years. 30 of the 32 patients were still in remission at the last consultation. The criteria of remission proposed by the ARA are confirmed by these cases. The authors raise the question of the influence of basic treatment on the incidence of remission.

Non immunological analytic data for the differential diagnosis between miliary tuberculosis (MTBC) and bird breeder's disease (BBD).

A group of 86 patients diagnosed as having MTBC were compared to a group of 25 patients with BBD on the basis of various blood values included in routine analysis (hemogram, leukocyte count and differential, blood electrolyte values, urea, creatinine, total proteins and proteinogram). After statistical evaluation of the results, we concluded that the finding of low values for hemoglobin, and red blood cell (RBC) count and hematocrit, alterations of leukocyte count and differential, hypoalbuminemia, and hyponatremia, in a patient with fever and a miliary chest X-ray pattern, supports the diagnosis of MTBC. On the other hand, normal values for the above parameters, together with hypergammaglobulinemia favors the diagnosis of BBD. Our data also demonstrated a 79% mortality rate in patients with MTBC and plasma urea levels of more than 55 mg/100 ml (p less than 0.001).

[Arterial embolization in renal tumors (author's transl)].

Arterial embolization has been performed in 30 cases of renal tumors. Radical nephrectomy has followed renal embolization in 25 patients (10 stages I, 8 stage III, 7 stage IV). Renal embolization has been done without further operation in 5 patients with metastasis. Arterial embolization is well tolerated and useful during surgery. The best results in stage IV are seen with arterial embolization alone. Long-terme follow-up is needed for evaluation of results improvement.
