The Authors report two cases of splenectomy for trauma, followed by heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic tissue in omental pockets. A follow-up nuclear scan and ultrasonography showed function and growth of the splenic implants. The pertinent surgical literature is reviewed.

The paper describes a simple direct method for the preparation of a functional filling plate in the neonatal orthopedic treatment of cleft palate harelip. This method allows the corrective plate to be realised so as to reproduce the complex deformed anatomical structure in the smallest detail, thus avoiding the major problems of acceptance, function and load distribution on the delicate neonatal mucosa.

Sera from 46 patients with malignant melanoma (MM) in different clinical stages and from 25 healthy blood donors were studied by an indirect conventional immunofluorescent technique (IIT) and by an immunofluorescent complement-fixation test (ICFT). No specific and reliable serological reactivity could be demonstrated against autologous and homologous MM and other nonmalignant pigmented tissues. An increased incidence of diffused antinuclear (ANA; 41%) and cytoplasmic epidermal cell autoantibodies (A-CYT; 71%) was observed in the patients by IIT. Statistical evaluation of the results gave significant values in the chi 2 test in patients for ANA (chi 2 = 5.2061; p less than 0.05) and for A-CYT (chi 2 = 8.9176; p less than 0.01) versus age-matched controls. Thyroid microsomal, gastric parietal cell, smooth muscle and mitochondria autoantibodies were, respectively, detected in 4.3, 4.3, 4.3 and 0% of patients' sera.

Kimura's disease is a chronic inflammatory pathology belonging to the angio-lymphatic proliferative disorders. The clinical features are a tumour-like swelling usually in the head and neck, with or without lymphadenopathy, often accompanied by eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE. It could be confused with angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia. Other clinical differential diagnosis to Kimura's disease are reactive lymphadenopathy, lymphoma, parotid tumor with nodal metastasis and Mikulicz disease. The diagnosis is achieved by excisional biopsy which is also the therapy of choice. The prognosis is excellent. A case of Kimura's disease in an Italian female is presented together with a review of the literature.
In a series of 954 laparotomies performed for suspected acute appendicitis 5 (0.5%) cecal carcinomas were encountered. When considering patients over 50 years of age only, the incidence of right sided colon carcinomas raised to 5%. The authors review the therapeutic options in order to optimize patients' survival.
The epithelial bell which surrounds the clitoris in most mammals arises by fusion of visceral and parietal layers of the prepuce. Adhesion of the epithelia occurs between the squamous cells and a normal connection is formed by desmosomes and other junctions. There is total absence of cornifications. The squamous epithelial double lamina splits occasionally in some patches where the free surfaces are getting back to a normal process of keratinization as in the wall of the vestibule. In the closed pits the keratin scales form squamous granules without sebaceous secretion. Sometimes a similar process occurs in the human prepuce with the same results as described in cat and rabbit. The granules of keratin are different from the smegmaliths as they do not contain sebaceous secretion.
