Morphogenetic and growth related changes in lipids of Drosophila ananassae (Doleschall).

The lipid component of Drosophila ananassae have been identified qualitatively. Neutral and phospholipid fractions are specific for pupal, larval or adult extracts. Some of these lipid components are identical with those obtained from the temperate D. melanogaster and other species. This demonstrates biochemical convergence between geographically isolated species groups.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of mesoblastic nephroma. A case report.

A case of congenital mesoblastic nephroma of the left kidney was diagnosed in a 4-month-old child by fine needle aspiration cytology. The smears consisted of clustered and dyshesive spindle cells with minimal nuclear atypia and mitosis. No epithelial, tubular or glomeruloid differentiation was noted. Considering the age and cytomorphology, a diagnosis of mesoblastic nephroma was made. Histopathology of the nephrectomy specimen showed a tumor with features of atypical mesoblastic nephroma. Cytologic diagnosis of mesoblastic nephroma is important because the tumor has an excellent prognosis, and unlike Wilms' tumor, requires only surgery.

Atypical cytologic features of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. A review of 12 cases.

A total of 12 cases of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid were reviewed with regard to atypical cytologic features. They included clusters of cells with a follicular arrangement, papillary fronds, spindle-shaped cells, pleomorphic nuclei, nucleoli and intranuclear inclusions. Congo red staining on selected destained smears was positive for amyloid in three cases. Histology was also available in 12 cases. Two cases were incorrectly diagnosed as papillary carcinoma and one as follicular carcinoma on cytology. There were no false-positive diagnoses.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a subcutaneous metastasis of a malignant Brenner tumor of the ovary. A case report.

The fine needle aspiration cytologic findings of a subcutaneous metastasis from a malignant Brenner tumor of the ovary are described. Polygonal cells in clusters and single cells with fine cytoplasmic elongations, moderately pleomorphic nuclei having granular chromatin and multinucleate cells, occasional but prominent grooving of nuclei and many mitotic figures were the salient cytologic features. The cytohistologic correlation was good. The rare metastatic site of this unusual ovarian neoplasm makes this an interesting case and the first of its kind to the best of our knowledge.

Myiasis in filarial lymphoedema due to Chrysomyia bezziana.

In patients with filarial lymphoedema of the limbs, infestation by maggots is extremely rare. We saw three patients with lymphoedema who harboured Chrysomyia bezziana in leg ulcers and in one of them 128 maggots were recovered. A course of local dressing, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs resulted in healing of the wounds. Ulcers in patients with lymphoedema should be carefully tended with cleaning and dressing otherwise myiasis may supervene.

Metastatic cutaneous and subcutaneous deposits from internal carcinoma. An analysis of cases diagnosed by fine needle aspiration.

Thirty-eight cases diagnosed by fine needle aspiration as cutaneous/subcutaneous deposits from internal carcinomas were analyzed. Eighteen patients had undergone previous surgery for primary neoplasms in the breast (9 cases), prostate (1), kidney (1), ovary (1), rectum (3), cervix (1), cheek (1) and periampullary region (1). The metastatic deposits in these cases occurred 1-42 months following removal of the primary neoplasm. Sixteen patients had metastatic deposits occurring simultaneously with the primary tumor in the lung (4 cases), pancreas (1), stomach (3), esophagus (1), ovary (1), rectum (1) anal canal (1), maxillary antrum (1), gallbladder (1), colon (1) and kidney (1). In four patients with metastatic nodules, the primary was undetected in spite of a thorough clinical examination and laboratory investigations. There were five cases of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (umbilical metastases), four from primary cancer in the abdomen and one in which the primary remained unknown. The deposits were solitary except in one case and were usually less than 2.5 cm in diameter. Adnexal tumor can be a differential diagnosis. Special stains were of little help in such cases, and correlation with the clinical findings was enough to arrive at the diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration provides a rapid morphologic diagnosis in patients with cutaneous/subcutaneous metastatic deposits from internal carcinoma.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of chondroid syringoma and syringocystadenoma papilliferum. A report of two cases.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of one case each of chondroid syringoma and syringocystadenoma papilliferum with histopathologic confirmation are reported. The aspirate of chondroid syringoma was characterized by the presence of two distinct components, a mesenchymal element with a chondroid appearance and an epithelial component. The chondroid element predominated in the smears. The aspirate from syringocystadenoma papilliferum showed papillalike clusters and dyshesive, monomorphic epithelial cells in a background of inflammatory cells. The clinical diagnosis and differential cytodiagnoses are discussed.
