[Ligament injuries of the upper ankle joint: 10 years experience with a stable shoe].

To avoid cast fixation after injuries of the ankle ligaments, in 1980 we presented a new high top sports-boot with stabilizing plastic sticks on both sides of the shoe as a new method of after treatment; The original Stabil-S shoe. The follow up after 5 and 10 years experience shows good results and cast immobilisation of the ankle joint is practically not used any more for the above mentioned indication. Patients go back to work after 25 days on an average which is about 3 weeks earlier then with cast immobilisation. This is the reason why insurance companies in Europe cover the costs for this kind of after treatment, the Stabil-S shoe. To verify the fibular ligament lesions we use stressed x-ray examination in addition to the clinical tests and the patients history. The indication of operative or conservative treatment is still discussed. The late results however show better stability and function after operative treatment, especially for the group of young and active sport patients. The further development of the Stabil-S shoe will try to obtain a normal gait as well as sufficient stability around the ankle joint. This means mobility for the patient and stability around the ankle joint.

Incidence of oral candidosis.

Although it is well known that both yeasts in general and Candida albicans in particular are frequently found in the oral cavity of ill and even of healthy individuals, the definite incidence of oral candidosis is far from being clear. Today it is, however, possible to assess the frequency of oral candidosis in a country indirectly, judging from the frequency of prescription of drugs for this indication. Data thus obtained indicate a remarkable increase of the frequency of the disease during the last decade. While polyenes are still prescribed for oral candidosis about as often as ever, the prescription of azoles has gained more and more importance.

[Psychosocial development of an opiate addict--a catamnestic study].

In the summer of 1974, 204 opiate users in West Berlin were extensively interviewed in regard to their present living conditions (housing situation, employment, social contacts, use of drugs, subjective complaints, vocational goals, political und ideological orientation), their family background (education of parents, occupation of parents, intactness of family, family atmosphere, type of child rearing methods used by the parents, other addicts in the family), and the development of the opiate addict himself (significant personal relationships in childhood and adolescence, psychosocial disturbances prior to use of drugs, addictive behavior prior to use of drugs, educational and vocational background). The results of this catamnestic study were presented and discussed.

["Chronic inguinal strain" in top-athletes and its treatment (author's transl)].

The picture of "chronic inguinal strain" must be regarded as a further development of the "gracilis-syndrome" described by Schneider in 1964 (posttraumatic pibic osteonecrosis). These are rupture of the tendons of gracilis and adductor-longus, degenerated at their points of insertion on the pubic bone. Only surgery is successful. As described by Schneider, the tendon is divided and osteonecrotic tissue removed. If there is rupture the necrotic part of the tendon is excised, the remainder suture red to the nearby tendon. Re-fixation of the tendon at the pubic bone is unnecessary because of the very monor adduction-function of gracilis. Return to sport will be possible-on average-after 6-8 weeks.
