Forced vital capacity in Malaysian females.

Spirometry was performed on 614 female subjects ranging in age from 13 to 69 years and comprising all the main races in Malaysia. They were divided into six age categories. Mean forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were 2.51 +/- 0.02 and 2.31 +/- 0.02l, respectively. Both FVC and FEV1 correlated negatively with age. Regression analysis revealed an age-related decline in FVC of 220 ml per decade of life. Multiple stepwise regression of the data for the prediction of an individual's FVC above the age of 20 years gave an equation: FVC(l) = 0.0312 (height)-0.022 (age)-1.64. Predicted FVC values derived from equations based on other populations were considerably higher than the observed mean in this study. Our study, therefore, reemphasizes the need to be cautious when applying formulae derived from one population to another. Grossly erroneous conclusions may be reached unless predicted equations for lung-function tests for a given population group are derived from studies based on the same population group.

A comparative study of bronchodilator actions of ipratropium bromide (atrovent) & salbutamol (ventolin) on exercise induced bronchial asthma.

The bronchodilator actions of salbutamol and ipratropium bromide were compared in 30 established cases of bronchial asthma, before and after exercise. It was noticed that after exercise (brisk walk for 3 min.) the PFT values of FVC, PEFR and FEV-1, decreased remarkably from the basal values, the mean fall of 17.91%, 10.68% & 14.8% respectively was noticed. Salbutamol showed improvement in FVC, PEFR, FEV-1, of 20.86%, 15.96% & 17.98% respectively from basal values, while Ipratropium bromide showed improvement by 18.31%, 13.01% & 20.90% respectively. It was also noted that salbutamol is a better drug amongst smokers, patients with family history of bronchial asthma, and in younger age groups. Ipratropium bromide was better in elderly patients (> 40 yrs.) and in those with eosinophillia.

Lipid composition of thylakoid membranes of cadmium treated wheat seedlings.

Cadmium (200 ppm) applied through the rooting medium to 30-day-old wheat plants decreased chlorophyll content, net CO2 exchanges and PSII activity by 34, 54 and 43% respectively. Thylakoid total lipids, total glycolipids, total phospholipids and total neutral lipids decreased by 22, 23, 12 and 25%, respectively, under cadmium treatment. Thylakoid membrane glycolipids had three major constituents, viz. monogalactosyl diacylglycerol, digalactosyl diacylglycerol and sulphoquinovosyl diacylglycerol. Monogalactosyl diacylglycerol and digalactosyl diacylglycerol contents decreased by 32 and 27%, respectively, under cadmium. Cadmium application also decreased the concentration of phosphatidyl glycerol and phosphatidyl choline to the extent of about 57 and 31%, respectively. On the other hand, phosphatidic acid and free fatty acids content showed an increase. These compositional changes in thylakoid membranes might be responsible for reduced PSII activity and rate of photosynthesis as observed under cadmium treatment.

Effects of topically applied sulphur mustard on tissue glycogen, blood glucose, lactate and pyruvate in mice.

Bis-2-Chloroethyl sulphide, commonly known as sulphur mustard (SM) or mustard gas, an alkylating agent, is frequently used as a chemical warfare agent. Inhibition of glycolysis has been related to skin injury and cell death. The effects of SM on tissue glycogen, blood glucose, lactate/pyruvate ratio were investigated in the present study. After a single dermal application of 1.0 LD50 SM in mice, a significant hyperglycemia was observed at 24 hr post exposure. There was a corresponding decrease in liver glycogen content, with no alteration in glycogen content of brain, muscles and kidney. Blood pyruvate and lactate levels were not appreciably altered.

Aldose reductase and diabetic retinopathy.

Serum aldose reductase activity was estimated spectrophotometrically in 25 normal subjects (Group A), 25 diabetic patients without retinopathy (Group B), and 25 diabetic patients with retinopathy (Group C). Serum aldose reductase levels were higher in diabetic patients with or without retinopathy than in normal subjects. Comparing the serum aldose reductase activity in diabetic patients with and without retinopathy showed the value was higher in the former group; this difference was statistically significant (P < .01). However, aldose reductase activity in proliferative and background retinopathy were equal and therefore not significant.

Occurrence of multiple antimicrobial resistance among Haemophilus influenzae type b causing meningitis.

Among the 157 children with culture proven pyogenic meningitis who were admitted during 1987-1991, in the Department of Child Health at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, 40 had H. influenzae type b (HIB) meningitis; 17 of these had multiantimicrobial resistant HIB (MRHIB) and 23 others had usual susceptibility HIB (USHIB) meningitis. The two groups were compared. Children with MRHIB meningitis who received optimal treatment with cefotaxime had excellent recovery. When cefotaxime therapy was delayed, mortality was noted in all except one child who survived with severe neurological sequelae. MRHIB meningitis treated with drugs other than cefotaxime had 100 per cent mortality. Cefotaxime is therefore recommended in children below 3 yr of age presenting with purulent meningitis, as MRHIB is a possible causative agent in this group.

Correlative effects of quinidine on ECG pattern and serum cholesterol concentration in Acridotheres tristis.

Antiarrhythmic drug quinidine, administered daily at the rate of 10 mg/kg for 7 days in A. tristis produced an increasing effect on the amplitude and duration of different waves and intervals. Heart rate was decreased from 478.40 to 444.47 beats/min. Serum cholesterol level was reduced from 86 to 54.30 mg/100 ml. The data of the effect of quinidine on the ECG pattern and serum cholesterol were analysed and the values of the correlation coefficient and their significance were computed. The values of the correlation coefficient computed between the level of serum cholesterol (Y) and P-R interval (X) comes out to be significant at 5% level of significance. A linear regression line Y on X was fitted to the above data and the line is found to be: Y = 2535.897 X -62.858. This regression line may be used to determine the level of serum cholesterol on the basis of changes in the P-R interval of the ECG tracing in the quinidine treated birds.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign cutaneous growth presenting as papules or nodules. It is characterized by an intradermal collection of lipid-laden macrophages and varying degrees of fibroblastic proliferation. We have recently observed two patients with xanthogranulomas: one was found to have a papular type and the second patient had multiple nodular growths. We present these cases, which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of skin nodules.

Chlorobenzoate catabolic transposon Tn5271 is a composite class I element with flanking class II insertion sequences.

The structure of a transposon specifying the biodegradation of chlorobenzoate contaminants is described. Tn5271 is a 17-kilobase (kb) transposon that resides in the plasmid or chromosome of Alcaligenes sp. strain BR60 and allows this organism to grow on 3- and 4-chlorobenzoate. The transposon is flanked by a directly repeated sequence of 3201 base pairs (bp), which in turn is flanked by 110-bp inverted repeats. The 3.2-kb repeated sequence, designated IS1071, exists in multiple copies in the genome of Alcaligenes sp. strain BR60 and is involved in recombination of the catabolic genes into the chromosome of this strain. Sequence analysis revealed that the inverted repeat of IS1071 and the derived amino acid sequence of the single open reading frame within IS1071 are related to the inverted repeats and transposase (TnpA) proteins of the class II (Tn3 family) transposable elements. The absence of a resolvase gene within IS1071 suggests that this element is capable of determining the first step in class II transposition only. This was confirmed by observations on the IS1071-dependent formation of stable cointegrates in a recombination-deficient Escherichia coli. These results support an evolutionary scheme in which the class II transposable elements descended from simple insertion sequences.
