[Levels of essential elements in pubic hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy].

Concentrations of iron, zinc and copper were determined in public hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy. The aim of the studies was to find differences between the levels of studied elements in public hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy and to test whether parity, place of residence and smoking influence the measured levels. A study population consisted of 101 women aged 18-41 years. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was the method employed to determine the concentrations of the studied elements. The levels of copper were elevated in smokers in full-term pregnancy in comparison to nonsmokers.

[Blood serum laminin in gravidae with threatened abortion].

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to compare the serum laminin levels in patients with threatened abortion and healthy gravidae with uncomplicated pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty five pregnant women with menstrual arrest period ranging from 7 to 22 weeks, presenting with symptoms of threatened abortion (TA), were included into the study. Control group consisted of 25 healthy gravidae with uneventful course of pregnancy matched for the gestational age. Blood serum laminin was quantified by means of ELISA method using commercially available kits. RESULTS: Average serum laminin levels (S-L) measured in gravidae with threatened abortion was significantly higher than that of the control group. In patient with sonographically diagnosed trophoblast ablation the serum laminin was significantly elevated in comparison with the remaining patients of TA group, who had no sonographic abnormalities found. The patients with favorable outcome had mean serum laminin significantly lower than that of the patients with subsequent pregnancy loss. CONCLUSIONS: The observed difference in serum laminin level between patients with TA and patients with uncomplicated pregnancy seems to result from the release of laminin from trophoblast in cases when the integrity of the decidual/conceptual interface is disintegrated. This hypothesis is further supported by the finding of the high S-L in patients with the ablation of trophoblast. The obtained results suggest the prognostic value of S-L measurements in patients with imminent abortion.

[Influence of maternal smoking on kynurenic acid concentrations in umbilical cord blood].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of maternal smoking on kynurenic acid (KYNA) levels in venous and arterial umbilical cord blood of neonates. Statistically significant lower concentration of KYNA in umbilical arterial blood of smoking mothers neonates was observed. The lower levels of KYNA in blood may reflect the smaller resistence of neuronal tissue to damages under hypoxic-ischemic conditions in neonates affected during intrauterine life by smoking.

[Resumption of menstruation during lactation after delivery].

Twenty-three women in the menstruation resumption during lactation were evaluated. Average period of lactational amenorrhoea was 7 months after delivery. Ovulation before the first menstruation has occurred in 7 breastfeeding women (39%), but only in one case it took place earlier than 6 months after labour. The correlation was established between the resumption of menstruation and entirely period of breastfeeding per day. The Lactational Amenorrhoea Method (LAM) as the family planning procedure was discussed.
