Uranium and some other trace elements were determined in the size-separated airborne dust collected in Tsukuba with an Andersen-type high-volume cascade impactor. The fission track method and the instrumental neutron activation method were applied to the determination of uranium and other elements, respectively. Selenium, antimony, arsenic and zinc were found to be rich in particulates of smaller size, while scandium, iron and cobalt showed a reverse trend, depending on their main origins, i.e. whether industrial or terrestrial. Uranium was distributed in both the larger and smaller particles to the same extent, suggesting that it is derived from both the terrestrial and artificial sources.

Uranium in several human tissues (lung, liver, kidney, muscle, spleen, heart, cerebrum and bones) from Japanese in the Tokyo area was determined by the fission track method. The average U content was the highest in lung with 1.70 ppb wet, and decreased in the order of lung greater than bones greater than heart and muscle greater than kidney greater than liver and spleen, showing markedly different tendencies from the description in the 1982 UNSCEAR Report (UNSCEAR82). Correlations were observed between U content in lung and in other tissues. These data suggest that the contribution of inhalation of U to its total intake is not negligible. The total body burden of U for the ICRP Reference Man (ICRP74) was estimated to be about 40 micrograms, which is rather small compared with the average normal burden of 90 micrograms currently accepted by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP79).

The adsorption behavior of radioiodine on soils has been studied. Soils were collected in Tokai, Ibaraki Pref . and classified with soil texture and contents of organic matter. Carrier-free radioiodine in iodide form is adsorbed on soil independent of soil properties, while radioiodine in iodate form is more readily adsorbed on soil which is abundant in organic, matter.
Several Japanese human soft tissues were analyzed for uranium by the fission track method. The tissues which were examined included lung, liver, kidney, spleen and muscle. The average concentration of uranium in the lung was estimated to be 1.86 ppb-wet and was the highest of all the tissues analysed. The results of the present work are consistent with the reported values for U.K. and U.S.A. human tissues.
