Immunopathology and microvascular lesions in human sympathetic ganglia.

Lumbar sympathetic ganglia surgically removed from adult patients affected by obstructive peripheral arteriopathies are investigated with traditional histology and fluorescent antibody technique. The presence of various pictures of microangiopathy is confirmed, mainly haemodynamic (hyaline-oedematous perivascular thickening) phenomena. Since specific fluorescence is absent from any lesion, the autoimmune pathogenic hypothesis may be discarded.

Heterologous antilymphocyte serum hastens the growth of 7,12-dimethylbenz(alpha)anthracene induced tumours in mice.

The present paper describes the effects of repeated administration of rabbit anti-mouse lymphocyte serum (ALS) or normal rabbit serum (NRS) on tumours induced in Charles-River mice by 7,12-dimethylbenz(α)anthracene (DMBA) given at birth. ALS or NRS were given either at the time of DMBA administration and subsequently at weekly intervals for the first 10 weeks of life, or at daily intervals for 7 days during the first, second, third or fourth week of life. The incidence and histology of the tumours were studied. It was found that treatment of very young mice with ALS greatly reduced the mean survival time of mice and significantly increased the incidence of malignant lymphoma. The incidence of lung tumours was found to be significantly increased in the animals injected with ALS during the second week of life.Treatment with ALS in the other experimental groups gave results essentially similar to those observed in DMBA control and NRS treated mice.

Selenium and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis. The effects of different levels of dietary selenium on clinico-pathological findings.

There are reports in which multiple sclerosis (MS) seems to be associated with abnormalities in selenium (Se) metabolism and erythrocyte glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-px) activity. Ordinary experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), which reflects some features of human MS, was induced in guinea pigs maintained with high, low and normal levels of Se in the diet. Evidence was obtained to indicate the following results: (i) a direct correlation between dietary Se levels and whole blood Se levels. (ii) Erythrocyte GSH-px activity was not found to be correlated with the blood Se content. (iii) The animals fed with low or normal levels of Se showed the same survival rates and developed EAE in a similar way and percentage. (iv) The animals fed with high non-toxic levels of Se showed a high incidence of death and some developed EAE with a subacute course, when compared with the other experimental groups. The results are discussed on the basis of findings in the literature.

Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin and 7, 12-dimethylbenz(a)-anthracene carcinogenesis in mice.

The effects of single or repeated Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG) treatment on the onset of tumors induced by the carcinogen 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) injected at birth into Swiss mice were studied. Multiple doses of BCG, given at regular intervals significantly lowered the incidence of carcinogen-induced tumors. The DMBA-induced lung adenomas did not differ morphologically from the ones that appeared in mice simultaneously treated with both DMBA and BCG.
