Views of the endothelial surface of the marginal sinus in rat spleens using the scanning electron microscope.

The cell-passing pores and the endothelial surface of the marginal sinus of the rat spleen were studied using a scanning electron microscope. The cell-passing pores were observed to be limited to the endothelial junction of the marginal sinus on the marginal zone side. They were so large that blood cells might easily pass through them. The cell-passing pores were thought to be the main pathway for blood cells moving from the marginal sinus to the marginal zone. The endothelial surface was relatively smooth, although some granular microvilli were distributed irregularly on the surface. At the endothelial junction, microvilli-like projections lined the junctional edge.

Ultrastructure of peripheral lymphocytes in generalized ceroid-lipofuscinosis. Report of a case.

Electron microscopic observation was made on the peripheral blood cells obtained from a 4-year-old boy with generalized ceroid-lipofuscinosis (GCL), and two kinds of significant inclusions were found in the cytoplasm of lymphocytes. One was ceroid-lipofuscin accompanied with the fingerprint pattern, and the other was a lamellar body which showed the concentric lamellar structure or the myelin figure. Ceroid-lipofuscin was found in 40% of peripheral lymphocytes. It is important in diagnosing GCL that ceroid-lipofuscin can be detected with high incidence in lymphocytes of peripheral blood.

Primary cerebral malignant lymphoma of the histiocytic type.

A 60-year-old house wife complained of anorexia, headaches and vomiting for several months. Later she developed disturbances in gait. At the terminal stage of her clinical course, 3 masses in the cerebrum and one in the cerebellum were detected by angiography and CT-scans. At autopsy, 3 masses in the frontal lobes, and one in each thalamus and still another in the cerebellum were found. They were accompanied with necrotic and haemorrhagic changes. Tumor cells were large irregular or round in shape, and showed metallophilia by the silver impregnations for reticlum cells and microglia. Some of them were multinucleated giant cells. Tumor cells showed occasionally phagocytic activity. Perivascular infiltration of tumor cells was marked around the tumor masses.

An electron microscopical morphometrical study on pinealocytes of pregnant rats.

A morphometrical study was made on the cut-surface of the pinealocytes in electron micrographs of the pineals from pregnant, puerperal and non-pregnant female rats. No significant differences in the cross-sectional area of the pinealocytes and the nuclei or in the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio were found among the three groups of pregnant, puerperal and non-pregnant rats. The cross-sectional area of the nucleoli was, however, larger in the pinealocytes of the rats in pregnancy and early puerperium. This has been statistically confirmed by the ranking method (the U-test) of Wilcoxon, Mann and Whitney. The enlargement of nucleoli suggests the enhanced function of the pineal in pregnancy and early puerperium.

[Tissue mast cell count in immunocytoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (author's transl)].

The amount and distribution of tissue mast cells in the three subtypes of immunocytoma (IC) were studied in lymph nodes of 58 cases and compared with the findings on 34 cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). There were significantly more mast cells in the lymphoplasmacytic and lymphoplasmacytoid subtypes of IC than in CLL. The median mast cell count for the polymorphic subtype of IC was also greater than that for CLL; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Tissue mast cells were diffusely distributed in the lymph nodes in IC, whereas they were chiefly located in the sinus in CLL. Moreover, the cells themselves and their granules were generally larger in IC. Increase in the number and altered distribution of the tissue mast cells in histological sections are therefore diagnostic aids for distinguishing IC from CLL.

The marginal sinus in the perifollicular region of the rat spleen.

The marginal sinus in the spleen of the Wistar rat surrounds the follicle and has more numerous PAS positive fibers on the inner wall than on the outer wall. India ink- and lead oxide-gelatin were injected into the abdominal aorta. It was found that much of the india ink-gelatin accumulated in the marginal sinus, the marginal zone, and part of the red pulp, while most of the lead oxide-gelatin collected in the marginal sinus. Ultrastructurally, the capillaries of the follicle were found to open into the marginal sinus. Regions not perforated by the marginal sinus lie between the follicle and the marginal zone. The wall of the marginal sinus is discontinuous and the discontinuities are wider on the marginal zone side than on the follicle side. The relationship of these findings is discussed.
