The result of therapy of 67 cases of children with malignant testicular tumors is presented. The majority of these cases were embryonal carcinoma in which metastases had occurred in the retroperitoneal lymph nodes, lungs, and bones. Long-term survival was obtained in 89% of the cases treated by simple orchiectomy followed by retroperitoneal irradiation. Two cases with metastases benefitted from chemotherapy. The prognosis of embryonal carcinoma of the testis is correlated with the age of the patient and the histologic pattern of the carcinoma; early detection and appropriate treatment are most important for its cure.
The entire gastrointestinal tract and bones were examined systematically in 24 patients (10 pedigrees) in whom familial polyposis coli was diagnosed. Polypoid lesions were observed in the stomach in as high as 68.2% of the cases, and in the duodenum in 90%. Abnormalities were noted in the skeleton in 50% and in the mandible in 81.3%. The authors emphasize the possibility that familial polyposis coli is substantially the same entity as Gardner's Syndrome.
Leiomyosarcomas of the small intestine were found in dogs during experimental induction of gastric carcinoma by oral administration of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). Leiomyosarcomas were found most frequenly in the duodenum and jejunum, and occasionally in the stomach but never in the ileum, colon, or rectum. The leiomyosarcomas developed in all the dogs given 50 mug/ml of MNNG in deionized water to drink but not in dogs fed on porridge food made from standard pellet diet mashed with MNNG at the same concentration in tap water. Intestinal sarcomas developed in 3 months to 5 years after the end of MNNG administration, and frequently metastasized to the liver and/or the peritoneum.

To produce an immunologically and enzymologically new type of l-asparaginase, 108 strains of bacteria were screened for enzyme production. As a result, 13 bacteria belonging to the genera Alcaligenes, Bacterium, and Proteus were found to produce l-asparaginases in high levels. Among these l-asparaginases, partially purified l-asparaginases from B. cadaveris and P. vulgaris showed antitumor activity. A partially purified l-asparaginase preparation of P. vulgaris did not react with the antibody of Escherichia colil-asparaginase on the Ouchterlony agar plate. Culture conditions for the production of l-asparaginase by P. vulgaris were investigated in detail. The enzyme was produced in high yields when cells were grown aerobically in a medium containing sodium fumarate and corn steep liquor. The addition of glucose or ammonium ion to the medium, however, resulted in depressed production of l-asparaginase. Under the optimum conditions, 3,700 international units of l-asparaginase was obtained from 1 liter of culture medium.
