The D-galactose-binding lectin of the octocoral Sinularia lochmodes: characterization and possible relationship to the symbiotic dinoflagellates.

A D-galactose binding lectin (SLL-2) was isolated from Sinularia lochmodes, an octocoral, by a combination of affinity chromatography on acid-treated agarose and FPLC on Superdex 200. SLL-2 agglutinated rabbit and horse erythrocytes while SLL-1, a minor component, reacted only with rabbit erythrocytes. SLL-2 is a glycoprotein with a molecular mass of 122 kDa and is composed of eight identical subunits (15 kDa). The sequence of the amino terminal region of SLL-2 did not show any apparent homology to the sequences of other animal and plant lectins. D-Galactose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, lactose, and melibiose were moderate inhibitors to the agglutination of rabbit erythrocytes. In contrast, horse erythrocytes were much more susceptible to agglutination by SLL-2, which was inhibited by sugars and glycoproteins such as D-galactose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, lactose, melibiose, and porcine stomach mucin. SLL-2 showed considerable tolerance to heating and kept its activity after heating at 80 degrees C for 60 min. In immuno-histochemical studies using an anti-SLL-2 antiserum and protein A gold conjugate, SLL-2 was found to be present in high amounts in the nematocysts. SLL-2 was also detected on the surface of symbiotic dinoflagellate, Symbiodinium sp. cells irrespective whether they were surrounded with or without host cells. These observations suggest the presence of lectin-mediated interaction between symbiotic dinoflagellates and S. lochmodes.

The mammalian ShcB and ShcC phosphotyrosine docking proteins function in the maturation of sensory and sympathetic neurons.

Shc proteins possess SH2 and PTB domains and serve a scaffolding function in signaling by a variety of receptor tyrosine kinases. There are three known mammalian Shc genes, of which ShcB and ShcC are primarily expressed in the nervous system. We have generated null mutations in ShcB and ShcC and have obtained mice lacking either ShcB or ShcC or both gene products. ShcB-deficient animals exhibit a loss of peptidergic and nonpeptidergic nociceptive sensory neurons, which is not enhanced by additional loss of ShcC. Mice lacking both ShcB and ShcC exhibit a significant loss of neurons within the superior cervical ganglia, which is not observed in either mutant alone. The results indicate that these Shc family members possess both unique and overlapping functions in regulating neural development and suggest physiological roles for ShcB/ShcC in TrkA signaling.

The Drosophila trio plays an essential role in patterning of axons by regulating their directional extension.

We identified the Drosophila trio gene, which encodes a Dbl family protein carrying two Dbl homology (DH) domains, each of which potentially activates Rho family GTPases. Trio was distributed along axons in the central nervous system (CNS) of embryos and was strongly expressed in subsets of brain regions, including the mushroom body (MB). Loss-of-function trio mutations resulted in the misdirection or stall of axons in embryos and also caused malformation of the MB. The MB phenotypes were attributed to alteration in the intrinsic nature of neurites, as revealed by clonal analyses. Thus, Trio is essential in order for neurites to faithfully extend on the correct pathways. In addition, the localization of Trio in the adult brain suggests its postdevelopmental role in neurite terminals.

Activin increases bone mass and mechanical strength of lumbar vertebrae in aged ovariectomized rats.

Activin is a member of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily and is thought to be involved in the regulation of bone formation due to its presence in bone tissue and its osteogenic activity both in vitro and in vivo. We recently found that systemic administration of activin increased both tibial bone mass and mechanical strength in young growing rats. The present study investigated the effects of activin in aged ovariectomized (ovx) rats. Twelve-month-old Fischer rats were ovariectomized and maintained for 10 months. Recombinant human activin A (activin) or human parathyroid hormone 1-34 (PTH) was administered intramuscularly three times a week for 12 weeks. Activin (1 and 5 microg/kg) markedly increased lumbar vertebral bone mineral content and bone mineral density. Activin also increased the mechanical strength of the vertebral body, which was highly correlated to the bone mineral density of the vertebral body. The maximal response in bone mass and strength was observed at 1 microg/kg of activin, which was approximately equal to that induced by PTH at 40 microg/kg. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography revealed that activin enlarged the cross-sectional size of the vertebrae without changing the foramen area, indicating its effects on cortical shells. Histomorphometric analysis of cancellous bone of vertebral body in similar experiment showed that activin (3 microg/kg) increased bone volume and the mineralizing surface, although its effects were less than PTH. The present results indicate that low doses of activin are effective against vertebral bone loss in aged ovx rats.

Activin release from bone coupled to bone resorption in organ culture of neonatal mouse calvaria.

Activin, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily, is present in the bone matrix and assumed to be involved in the regulation of bone formation. In the present study, we investigated whether the release of activin from bone is coupled with bone resorption. Neonatal mouse calvaria were cultured in the presence of various stimulators of bone resorption (parathyroid hormone [PTH], interleukin-1beta, prostaglandin E2) for up to 72 h, and the activin activity in the medium was measured using a specific bioassay for activin. Activin activity was accumulated in proportion to the time- and dose-dependent increase in calcium release from bone into the medium (bone resorption). An inhibition of PTH-dependent bone resorption by a bisphosphonate, disodium dichlormethane-1,1-bisphosphonic acid (Cl2MBP), completely blocked release of activin activity from bone into the medium. In primary culture of calvarial cells, however, neither PTH nor Cl2MBP affected activin production. These findings indicate that release of activin activity from bone tissue is strongly coupled to bone resorption. Because activin possesses osteogenic activities, activin released locally from bone might be involved in the regulation of bone formation in the physiological process of bone remodeling, as has been suggested for TGF-beta.

An ex post cost-benefit analysis of the nitrogen dioxide air pollution control program in Tokyo.

The benefits and costs of past nitrogen dioxide (NO2) control policies were calculated for Tokyo, Japan, using environmental, economic, political, demographic, and medical data from 1973 to 1994. The benefits of NO2 control were estimated as medical expenses and lost work time due to hypothetical no-control air concentrations of NO2. Direct costs were calculated as annualized capital expenditures and 1 year's operating costs for regulated industries plus governmental agency expenses. The major findings were as follows: (1) Using Tokyo's average medical cost of pollution-related illness, the best net estimate of the avoided medical costs due to incidence of phlegm and sputum in adults was 730 billion yen ($6.08 billion; 1 U.S. dollar = 120 yen). (2) The best net estimate of the avoided medical costs due to incidence of lower respiratory illness in children was 93 billion yen ($775 million). (3) Using Tokyo's average duration of pollution-related illness and average wages, the best net estimate of the avoided costs of lost wages in workers was 760 billion yen ($6.33 billion). (4) The best net estimate of the avoided costs of lost wages in mothers caring for their sick children was 100 billion yen ($833 million). (5) Using Tokyo-specific data, the best net costs were estimated as 280 billion yen ($2.33 billion). (6) Using human health and productivity benefits, and annualized capital cost and operating cost estimates, the best net benefits-to-costs ratio was 6:1 (upper limit 44:1; lower limit 0.3:1). Benefit calculations were sensitive to assumptions of mobile source emissions and certain health impacts that were not included. Cost calculations were highly dependent on assumptions of flue gas volume and fuel use. For comparative purposes, we identified other studies for air pollution-related illness. Assumptions that formed the basis for most of the inputs in the present study, such as duration of illness, medical treatment costs, per person illness in children, and lost wages for working mothers, were similar to those recommended in the literature. Lost wages in sick workers and per capita illness incidence in adults were higher than numbers reported elsewhere. Further advances in cost-benefit analysis (CBA) procedures to evaluate the economic effectiveness of NO2 controls in Tokyo are recommended to estimate impacts and values for additional human health benefits, ecosystem health and productivity effects, and nonliving system effects, as well as benefits of ancillary reductions in other pollutants. The present study suggests that Tokyo's past NO2 control policies in total were economically quite effective.

Sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the detection of bacterial superantigens and antibodies against them in human plasma.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the quantitation of bacterial superantigens, staphylococcal enterotoxins A, B and C, toxic-shock syndrome toxin-1 and streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A, were developed. The assays had sensitivity to quantitate these toxins to 1.4, 5.9, 16.3, 2.5 and 4.3 pg/ml, respectively, in a buffer including 50% human plasma. It takes only 150 min to complete the assays after plate preparation. Specificity of the assays agreed with those of reverse latex agglutination assay. We also developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to detect antibodies against these five superantigens. The assays are expected to be significant tools for the study of superantigens in several diseases.

[A new exanthematous disease in newborn infants caused by exotoxins producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; pathology from viewpoints of local and systemic levels of exotoxin and cytokine].

Neonatal exanthematous diseases induced by toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1)-producing methicillin-resistant Staphyloccocus aureus (MRSA) is one of emerging infectious diseases in Japan. We experienced 36 patients with this disease in National Kagawa Children's Hospital and in 13 patients of them, investigated the role of both the toxin and cytokines in pathogenesis of it. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The TSST-1 level was high in the umbilical inflammatory exudate of cases induced by umbilical infection and in the gastric fluid of cases induced by respiratory infection. The blood TSST-1 level was below the detection limit in most of the exathematous++ cases examined, but it was detected in one of the nine cases induced by respiratory infection and a case secondary to severe MRSA infection (phlegmonous abscess in buttock). 2. Local cytokine levels were examined in the abscess pus obtained from a case of severe MRSA infection and in the gastric fluid from cases induced by respiratory infection. The local levels of TNF [alpha], IL-1 [beta], IL-6 and IL-8 were markedly high, but the local levels of IL-2 and IFN-[gamma] were similar to their blood levels. 3. The severity of hypercytokinemia (IL-1 [beta], IL-2, IL-6, IFN-[gamma]) was proportionate to the severity of exanthematous disease. Accompanied by increased levels of inhibitory factors sTNF-R, IL-1 ra, sIL-2R and IL-10, this hypercytokinemia normalized soon within four or five days. 4. As compared to cases induced by umbilical infection, cases induced by respiratory infection often had higher blood cytokine levels and some of them had cardiorespiratory disorders. Based on the results of this study, we consider that this disease is generally induced by toxemia with a small number of toxins without tissue destructive lesions by MRSA infection and that this is closely related to the course of the disease that shows a tendency to a spontaneous recovery.

CIZ, a zinc finger protein that interacts with p130(cas) and activates the expression of matrix metalloproteinases.

p130(cas) (Cas) is a docking protein that contains an SH3 domain and multiple tyrosine residues. p130(cas) is located at focal adhesions, is tyrosine phosphorylated in response to integrin stimulation, and is thought to transmit signals, via c-Crk and other proteins, for the remodeling of actin stress fibers and cell movement. In a search for the ligands of the SH3 domain of p130(cas) by far-Western screening, we cloned a novel protein named CIZ (for Cas-interacting zinc finger protein). CIZ consists of the following: a putative leucine zipper; a serine/threonine-rich region; a proline-rich sequence; five, six, or eight Krüppel-type C(2)H(2) zinc fingers; and the glutamine-alanine repeat. CIZ binds Cas in cells and is located in the nucleus and at focal adhesions. We showed that CIZ is a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling protein, by using the transient interspecies heterokaryon formation assay. In order to search for the targets of CIZ in nucleus, we determined the DNA binding consensus of CIZ as (G/C)AAAAA(A) by cyclic amplification and selection of targets analysis. The consensus-like sequences are found in several promoters of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are the enzymes used to degrade the extracellular matrix proteins. CIZ binds to a consensus-like sequence in the MMP-1 (collagenase) promoter. Overexpression of CIZ upregulates the transcriptions from MMP-1, MMP-3 (stromelysin), and MMP-7 (matrilysin) promoters, and this transactivation was enhanced in the presence of Cas. Furthermore, the stable overexpression of CIZ promoted the production of MMP-7 in culture medium. In summary, CIZ, a novel zinc finger protein, binds Cas, is a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling protein, and regulates the expression of MMPs.

Predictive factors for central nervous system involvement in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: significance of very high serum LDH concentrations.

Factors predictive for central nervous system (CNS) involvement at presentation were investigated in 152 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) except for lymphoblastic cell lymphoma and small noncleaved cell lymphoma. Twelve patients developed CNS involvement during their disease course. The incidence was 7.9% of all the patients studied and 17.0% of the patients with serum LDH concentration > or = two times the upper limit of normal (2N). By univariate analysis, stage IV disease (P = .023), a serum LDH concentration > or = 2 N (P = .009), and bone marrow involvement (P = .016) were risk factors for CNS involvement. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified a serum LDH concentration > or = 2 N (P = .032) as an independent predictor for CNS involvement. All 12 patients who developed CNS involvement were among the 126 patients with diffuse lymphoma, whereas none of the 17 patients with follicular lymphoma developed CNS involvement, although the difference was not statistically significant. The median survival of the patients with CNS involvement was only 4.5 months. We conclude that a serum LDH concentration > or = 2N at presentation is a significant predictive factor for CNS involvement for NHL patients without lymphoblastic lymphoma and small noncleaved cell lymphoma. Therefore, we would suggest that CNS prophylaxis should be considered for patients with a serum LDH concentration > or = 2N at presentation and diffuse lymphoma once a complete remission is achieved.

[CD16+ CD56- indolent, NK cell-lineage granular lymphocyte proliferative disorder with autoimmune hemolytic anemia].

A 64-year-old man was given a diagnosis of CD16+ CD56- natural killer cell-lineage granular lymphocyte proliferative disorder (NK-GLPD) with Coombs-negative autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). Two courses of 1,000 mg intravenous methylprednisolone for 3 days were transiently effective for both AIHA and NK-GLPD. On the recurrence of AIHA, NK-GLPD also re-appeared. The same treatment was effective in controlling both diseases again. This was a rare case of NK-GLPD combined with autoimmune disease.

p130(Cas), an assembling molecule of actin filaments, promotes cell movement, cell migration, and cell spreading in fibroblasts.

p130(Cas) (Cas) is an adaptor molecule which becomes tyrosine phosphorylated by v-Src- or v-Crk-triggered transformation and several physiological stimuli, such as cell attachment to fibronectin. We previously generated mice lacking Cas and demonstrated that Cas functions as an assembling molecule of actin filaments. To further explore Cas role in cellular function, we established Cas-deficient and Cas-re-expressing fibroblasts and compared their behaviors in response to several biological stimuli. We found that Cas-deficient fibroblasts showed significant defects in cell movement after mechanical wounding and in cell migration toward fibronectin as compared with Cas-re-expressing cells. In addition, when plated on fibronectin-coated dishes, Cas-deficient cells exhibited a significant delay in cell spreading as compared with Cas-re-expressing cells albeit that protein-tyrosine phosphorylation was similarly induced. These results demonstrated that Cas functions as a molecule promoting cell movement, cell migration, and cell spreading and suggest that Cas would be implicated in various physiological and pathological processes, such as would healing, chemotaxis, and tumor invasion.

Crystal structure of a ribonuclease from the seeds of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) at 1.75 A resolution.

The ribonuclease MC1 (RNase MC1) from seeds of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) consists of 190 amino acid residues with four disulfide bridges and belongs to the RNase T(2) family, including fungal RNases typified by RNase Rh from Rhizopus niveus and RNase T(2) from Aspergillus oryzae. The crystal structure of RNase MC1 has been determined at 1.75 A resolution with an R-factor of 19.7% using the single isomorphous replacement method. RNase MC1 structurally belongs to the (alpha+beta) class of proteins, having ten helices (six alpha-helices and four 3(10)-helices) and eight beta-strands. When the structures of RNase MC1 and RNase Rh are superposed, the close agreement between the alpha-carbon positions for the total structure is obvious: the root mean square deviations calculated only for structurally related 151 alpha-carbon atoms of RNase MC1 and RNase Rh molecules was 1.76 A. Furthermore, the conformation of the catalytic residues His-46, Glu-105, and His-109 in RNase Rh can be easily superposed with that of the possible catalytic residues His-34, Glu-84, and His-88 in RNase MC1. This observation strongly indicates that RNase MC1 from a plant origin catalyzes RNA degradation in a similar manner as fungal RNases.

Local administration of activin promotes fracture healing in the rat fibula fracture model.

Osteogenic activities of activin, a member of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta superfamily, have been demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The present study investigates the effects of topical application of activin on fracture healing using rat fibula fracture models. Activin (0.4-10 microg/day) was injected locally to the fracture once a day for 2 weeks. Activin promoted callus formation in a dose-dependent manner and both callus volume and callus weight were significantly increased with doses of 2-10 microg/day activin. Also, 3 weeks of activin treatment increased the mechanical strength of the healing bone in addition to the callus mass. Histological study 2 weeks after the fracture revealed that activin promoted endochondral bone formation. Immunohistochemical examination of the fractured tibia revealed that activin was localized to osteoblasts and chondrocytes in the region ossified both endochondrally and intramembranously. These findings suggest that activin expressed during fracture healing promotes the healing process through an autocrine/paracrine mode of action.

Improvement of quality of life after splenectomy in an HTLV-I carrier with T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia.

A 34-year-old woman of HTLV-I carrier with T-PLL, whose quality of life improved and survival was prolonged after splenectomy, is described. The patient had marked splenomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy and marked proliferation of abnormal lymphocytes in the peripheral blood with an irregular nucleus, deeply basophilic cytoplasm and a single prominent nucleolus, which were positive for CD2, CD3, CD5, CD7, CD4 and CD8. Although the patient had serum antibody against HTLV-I, HTLV-I proviral DNA integration was not detected. She was diagnosed as an HTLV-I carrier with T-PLL and received combination chemotherapy and 15.1 Gy splenic irradiation. However, the generalized lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly did not improve. The patient underwent splenectomy to palliate abdominal distension and hypersplenism. After the operation, her symptoms improved dramatically and within a week her hemoglobin concentration and platelet count normalized. She was discharged from hospital two weeks after the splenectomy, however 11 months later, she relapsed and despite treatment with chemotherapy and alpha-interferon, she died two months after the second admission. Autopsy findings revealed that PLL cells had invaded the bone marrow, lymph nodes, liver, lungs, kidneys, uterus, ovaries and adrenal glands.

Pharmacokinetics of natural human IFN-alpha in hemodialysis patients.

A pharmacokinetic study of natural human interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) was conducted in hemodialysis patients. Natural human IFN-alpha was intramuscularly (i.m.) administered to 8 hemodialysis patients at a single dose of 5 million IU and to 7 patients undergoing hemodialysis at the same dose once daily for 5 successive days. The serum antiviral activity was determined by a cytopathic effect bioassay. In the single dose study, the serum antiviral activity reached a maximum (Cmax) of 56.4 +/- 33.3 IU/ml at 8.3 +/- 2.7 h after dosing, and the area under the serum concentration-time curve (AUC0-24h) was 957.2 +/- 601.8 IU h/ml. The Cmax and AUC0-24h values at day 5 following the repeated dosing were both 2.6-fold higher than those of day 1, and the serum antiviral activity reached a steady state within 3 days after initiation of repeated administration. The serum antiviral activity in hemodialysis patients showed a tendency to increase compared with that in the subjects with normal renal function, but the magnitude of the differences was not great. In one nonhemodialysis patient with poor renal function (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min), no increases in serum antiviral activity owing to repeated dosing were observed. The main adverse events seen were fever (4 of 13, 30.8%), leukopenia (3 of 13, 23.1%), and fatigue (2 of 13, 15.4%). These results suggest that dosage modifications of natural human IFN-alpha are unnecessary for patients with low renal function, even those undergoing hemodialysis.

Elevated cAMP suppresses muscarinic inhibition of L-type calcium current in guinea pig ventricular myocytes.

We investigated the effect of carbachol (CCh) on L-type Ca2+ current (ICa(L)) enhanced by dialyzed adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) and/or bath-applied 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) in guinea pig isolated ventricular myocytes. At pipette concentrations ([cAMP]pip) from 30 microM to 1 mM, cAMP increased ICa(L) to 25.8 +/- 0.9 microA/cm2 (682 +/- 24.8% increase above control). CCh (100 microM) did not inhibit ICa(L) at any [cAMP]pip. IBMX, a nonselective phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, increased ICa(L) maximally at 300 microM IBMX (17.9 +/- 0.7 microA/cm2; 449 +/- 20% increase). CCh (100 microM) inhibited ICa(L) by 92 +/- 9.5% at 30 microM IBMX and 78 +/- 4.6% at 100 microM IBMX; this effect was reduced or absent at higher IBMX concentrations (300 and 1,000 microM). Coadministration of cAMP and IBMX also progressively suppressed inhibition by CCh. CCh had a negligible effect on ICa(L) at 750 microM IBMX in the absence of pipette cAMP and at 50 microM IBMX in the presence of 100 microM [cAMP]pip. ACh-activated K+ current (IK(ACh)) was unchanged in atrial myocytes dialyzed with 100 microM cAMP; this excludes a phosphorylation-dependent desensitization of the muscarinic receptor (mAChR) or Gi by cAMP. LY83583 (100 microM), an inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) production, attenuated inhibition of ICa(L) by CCh in the presence of IBMX. 8-Bromo-cGMP (8-Br-cGMP), an activator of cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG), mimicked CCh in its actions on ICa(L) raised by both cAMP (no significant change) and IBMX (49 +/- 5.1% inhibition). Okadaic acid, an inhibitor of type 1 and 2A phosphatases, blocked inhibition of IBMX-stimulated ICa(L) by either CCh or 8-Br-cGMP. Thus the ability of CCh to inhibit ICa(L) appears caused by cGMP/PKG activation of an okadaic acid-sensitive protein phosphatase, and elevated levels of cAMP protect against this action.

[A new exanthematous disease in newborn infants caused by exotoxins producing Staphylococcus aureus; exotoxins production of the isolates and serum levels of antitoxin antibody in the patients and umbilical cord blood].

Recently, in Japan newly neonatal exanthematous disease was elucidated to be caused by staphyloccocal supcrantigcnic exotoxins, mainly TSST-1. We studied exotoxins producibility of 43 strains of S. aureus isolated from neonates with exanthematous disease and examined antibody titers to staphylococcal enterotoxin A, B, C (SEA, SEB, SEC) and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) of the patients and control (umbilical cord blood from term infants). The results were as follows 1.34 of 43 strains (79%) isolated from the patients were SEC and TSST-1 producing MRSA, 5 strains (12%) were SEB, SEC, and TSST-1 producing MRSA, 1 strain (2%) was SEB and TSST-1 producing MRSA, 2 strains (12%) were SEB producing MSSA and did not produce TSST-1. The 1 strain (2%) was MSSA which produced SEC and TSST-1. 2. 16 neonates with exanthematous disease, who showed typical clinical signs and laboratry findings of thrombocytopenia, with SEC and TSST-1 producing MRSA isolates had significantly low anti-TSST-1 antibody titers at onset (p < 0.05), compared with the control (umbilical cord blood from term infants): TSST-1 appeared to the causative agent for the disease. In two neonates with exanthematous disease, with SEB- and non- TSST-1-producing MSSA isolates, anti-SEB antibody titers were low at onset, so SEB appeared to the causative agent for the disease. 3. In Japan, low anti-TSST-1 antibody titers were found in the umbilical blood samples from about 70% of term infants; and low anti-SEB or anti-SEC antibody titers were found in samples from only about 10% of them, that is, a number of term infants had anti-SEB and anti-SEC antibodies. The majority of S. aureus isolated from neonates with exanthematous disease were enterotoxin- and TSST-1-producing MRSAs. The results of our study by measuring antitoxin antibody titers suggested that SEB and SEC might not be pathogenically responsible, but TSST-1 was considered to be responsible for the majority of exanthematous disease. Prevalence of TSST-1-producing MRSA in the neonatal and premature baby ward is the main cause for the high incidence of this disease in Japan, whereas the low antibody titer to TSST-1 in the mother, in comparison with the anti-enterotoxin antibody titers, may also be a predisposing factor.
