Anesthetic induction with thiopental: its effect on scalp topography of median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials.

The effects on median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) of analgesic doses of fentanyl, meperidine or morphine and of sodium thiopental (STP) anesthesia (4 mg/kg) were tested in 36 surgical patients. We also explored changes in SEP components as a function of their scalp location. Before and after medication, responses were recorded from the scalp overlying the parietal cortex (ipsi- and contralateral to the stimulated arm) and the precentral (contralateral) cortex. None of the three opiates affected SEP latencies or amplitudes. The barbiturate increased the amplitudes of subcortical and early cortical components (N18, N20, P22, P25), whose latencies, however, were not significantly modified. The effect of STP on later SEP cortical components depended on their scalp topography: parietal N33 and P45 underwent significant changes in both latency and amplitude, whereas precentral N30 showed a significant amplitude increase only. Thiopental anesthesia produces clearer short-latency SEP recordings, from both parietal (components N20-P25) and precentral (P22, N30) areas.

Synthesis and structure-activity relations in the class of 2-(pyridyl)penems.

The isosteric CH----N substitution in the class of 2-arylpenems results in improved antibacterial activity, with retention of the favorable characteristic of stability towards renal dehydropeptidase. High therapeutic efficacy was demonstrated in experimental mice septicemias with the 2-(3-pyridyl) derivative 2b and its orally absorbed acetoxymethyl ester prodrug 4n.

[Effects of somatostatin on human thyroid folliculi in vitro].

Somatostatin (SRIF) inhibits calcitonin and T3-T4 secretion in thyroid. We have investigated the in vitro effect of SRIF on the basal and TSH induced [3H]thy incorporation, thyroglobulin (tgb) RNA and cAMP level in follicular cells, isolated from normal and adenomatous human thyroids. [3H]thy uptake has been evaluated as TCA-precipitable material in 2, 4, 8, 24 h incubated follicles and 24 h incubated adherent cells. Tgb RNA has been quantified with cytoplasmic dot blot hybridization and cAMP level with RIA method. SRIF reduces basal and TSH-induced [3H]thy in both suspension follicles and epithelial adherent cells. However it does not modify tgb RNA nor cAMP levels in incubated follicles. These data suggest a direct antiproliferative effect of SRIF on human thyroid.

Neuroradiological examinations in optic neuropathies.

The advantages and limits of both CT and NMR imaging of optic nerve lesions are outlined and some examples are produced. Advantages of CT scanning are high resolution, multiplane reconstruction, quickness of examination, reliability, whereas the limits are the presence of artifacts from contiguous bone structures, the use of enhancement media and radiation damage. NMR is superior to CT scanning for detection of soft tissue lesions and possibility of multiplane scanning, but duration and high costs of the examination and some artifacts caused by ocular movements are limits to be taken into account. Both the techniques provide useful complementary information for the diagnosis of orbital lesions involving the optic nerve.

Histopathology in Atherina boyeri (Pisces: Atherinidae) resulting from infection by Telosentis exiguus (Acanthocephala).

The histopathology developing in the sand smelt Atherina boyeri Risso 1810 from Northern Italy as the result of a natural infection by Telosentis exiguus Von Linstow 1901 (Acanthocephala) was studied and described. Microscope examination of sections of intestinal tissues showed that the parasites did not penetrate through all intestinal layers, and that damage was mostly limited to the epithelium.

[La Peyronie's disease. Our experience].

Following an aetiopathogenetic review of I.P.P., diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities are assessed. Medically, stress is laid on the value of orgotein, an SOD which, used in time, reduces pain and penis curving and permits satisfactory sexual activity. In the case of inveterate forms or of large plaques, the use of a silastic prosthesis is proposed. This support enables a normal sex life to be continued, so resolving psychological and family stress.

[Use of intraoperative transcystic choledoscopy in calculosis of the main bile duct].

Choledochoscopy is complementary to peroperative cholangiography in exploration of the main biliary way. Transcystic access is proposed in choledocholithiasis. The cystic duct, in fact, is frequently transitable owing to the dilatation produced by the migration of gallstones and because of the increasing miniaturisation of instruments. This examination of the MBW is less traumatic and risky than transcholedochotomic choledochoscopy.

One-step immunoaffinity purification of bioactive human recombinant IL-1 beta with a monoclonal antibody directed to a well-exposed domain of the protein.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) specific for human recombinant IL-1 beta (hu rIL-1 beta) was produced by immunizing BALB/c mice with hu rIL-1 beta purified with classical methods. This mAb recognizes an epitope within the highly hydrophylic fragment spanning amino acid 133-147. The affinity constant of this mAb towards IL-1 beta was determined by RIA. An affinity column was prepared by covalent binding of the mAb to Sepharose CL-4B. The column was capable of selectively binding hu rIL-1 beta produced in Escherichia coli directly from crude homogenates. The IL-1 beta protein yield was higher than 90% with a very good recovery of IL-1 beta biological activity. Moreover, the immunosorbent retained at least two thirds of its IL-1 beta-binding capacity after 20 cycles of purification.

Different conformation of purified human recombinant interleukin 1 beta from Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae is related to different level of biological activity.

Human recombinant interleukin 1 beta produced in Escherichia coli and in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was purified to homogeneity by a combination of ion exchange, gel filtration and hydroxylapatite column chromatography. The two proteins, both expressed in the mature form, differ in that the protein secreted from yeast is glycosylated and lacks the first four amino acids. The biological activity of IL-1 obtained from E. coli is comparable to that of the natural protein, while the protein produced from yeast showed very low specific activity. The analysis of the state of oxidation of the two cysteine residues present in the IL-1 molecule and the evaluation of the immunoreactivity of the two proteins have proved that a different conformation is at the basis of the different biological activity of the two proteins.
