Left partial absence of the pericardium.

A case of left partial absence of the pericardium in a young patient is presented. Plain roentgenographic findings were suggestive, and 2-D echocardiography was useful only to rule out associated cardiac abnormalities. Computerized tomography led to the diagnosis permitting to define some typical features.

[Radiological technics in the study of the pleura and the chest wall].

Authors examine the most actual radiologic techniques for the investigation of pleura and chest wall. Advantages of decubitus views in the study of effusion are considered; diagnostic possibilities of echography and CT in the evaluation of abnormal findings in these regions are analyzed.

Mineral alterations in senile osteoporosis.

This research investigates the occurrence of involutional processes of mineral transformation in elderly patients with clinical, radiographic and histological signs of senile osteoporosis. The decreased ability to withstand static and dynamic stresses proved to be associated either with the quantitative reduction in trabeculae or with the altered morphology of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals. This variation produces a non-homogeneous mineral distribution which leads to a substantial alteration of the system of the stress lines producing mechanical bone behaviour. This altered distribution in mineral density has been attributed to the dynamic loss of balance between osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity; this is believed to be a peculiarity of senile osteoporosis.

[The use of computerized tomography in recurrences of rectal tumors].

The authors refer the results of CT studies of 33 patients who underwent surgical resection of the rectum for cancer. In 20 of these cases there was only a suspicion of recurrence; in 13 recurrence had been already clinically or instrumentally demonstrated. In the latter group (13 patients) CT clearly showed the presence of a pelvic mass and of muscular infiltration; in 8 cases pelvic organs and in 7 cases pelvic bones were involved; the mass had liquid density features in 3 patients. In 12 of the 20 cases in which cancer recurrence was suspected, CT demonstrated the presence of a pelvic mass. Compared to the former group infiltration of pelvic organs and bones was less frequent. Granulation tissue, fibrous tissue, abscess formation and surgical removal of epiploon placed into the pelvis may all be causes of false positivity. In order to reduce the rate of wrong diagnosis it is useful a post-operative evaluation of the pelvis as soon as it has recovered from surgery.

Determination of trace amounts of nitrites in fabricated nonmeat products.

Low levels of nitrite (1-5 ppm) contributed by raw materials in new fabricated food products were successfully determined by a modification of an AOAC method for processed meats. Recoveries were greater than 90% for composite samples to which 5-10 ppm nitrite had been added. This method allows analyses of fabricated food products containing hydrogenated vegetable oils, soy proteins, and dried egg whites for low levels of nitrite.

[Changes in the atlanto-odontoid articulation in rheumatoid arthritis. Radiologic observations in 86 cases].

The authors describe the alterations of atlanto-axial joint observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: 16 of 86 patients = 18.6% (15 females and 1 male) showed the presence of joint luxation. The authors suggest that a "dynamic" tomographic study in lateral orthostatic projection, with indifferent position and head flexed, is essential for demonstrating the changes of this joint and that examination should be performed in all patients with rheumatoid arthritis, even if they are asymptomatic.

[Multi-institution, multidisciplinary radiology and endoscopy trial of the diagnostic accuracy of the double contrast examination of the stomach surface].

In 12 X-ray and gastroenterology departments 1570 patients, clinically suspected to have a gastric pathology, have been examined by double contrast (surface) examination of the stomach followed by gastroscopy. Diagnostic accuracy was 93% in respect of endoscopic data, assumed correct by hypothesis. On the basis of a cost and benefit evaluation, made according to the well known criteria, a wider routine use of the double contrast technique is proposed.
