Hepatitis B virus replication in acute glomerulonephritis with chronic active hepatitis.

A 3 year old boy who had chronic active hepatitis type B with features of ongoing liver damage and active virus replication, developed acute membranous glomerulonephritis two years after the clinical onset of liver disease, when both hepatitis B e antigen and antibody were detectable in serum. After withdrawal of short term steroid treatment and resolution of hepatitis B virus replication, both glomerulonephritis and chronic hepatitis went into remission. Some months later hepatitis B surface antigen was no longer found in serum.

Inhibition of nonspecific streptococcal coagglutination reactions.

The reliability of latex coagglutination testing for the serological grouping of hemolytic streptococci is limited by the relatively high incidence of false-positive reactions. Pretreatment of streptococcal suspensions with antisera for the various groups that show clumping gives a specific inhibition of the latex agglutination with the true group, whereas the other groups continue to agglutinate aspecifically. The method is rapid and easy to perform, allows the exact grouping of those streptococci giving aspecific reactions, and is also a useful confirmatory test with monoreactive strains.

[Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma in mice C3H/He by Co 60 and hyperbaric oxygen (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: Experimental study of rhabdomyosarcoma with successive transplantation upon C3H/He mice, treated by irradiation (Co 60) and combined irradiation-hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), dating from 3, 14 and 15 days after transplantation. The data (tumor volume evolution, histological modifications, pulmonary metastases) are compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: curative radiotherapy depends on starting treatment as soon as possible with or without HBO. After the 14th day, sensitisation to combined HBO and C60 is seen. The extension of pulmonary metastases is a function of tumor growth. Paradoxically metastases were less frequent after HBO only and more frequent after HBO-Co 60.

Piezoelectric and related properties of hydrated collagen.

Two piezoelectric constants (polarization per unit stress, d=d'-id'', and polarization per unit strain, e=e'-ie''), the elastic constant, and dielectric constant are determined for oriented collagen at different hydration levels at 10 Hz from -150 to 50 degrees C. With no hydration (approximately 0% H2O), d' increases slightly with higher temperatures, while e' decreases slightly. Near 11 wt% H2O, both d' and e' increase then decrease around 0 degrees C, and is probably caused by an increase of the dielectric constant and the ionic conductivity in the nonpiezoelectric phase. Hydration greater than 25 wt%, d' and e' decrease above -50 degrees C which is considered to be due to a greater ionic conductivity surrounding the piezoelectric phase.

The school health team and school health physician: new role and operation.

A new concept of school health redefines the school physician's role as dealing primarily with behavior and learning disorders in children. It is an on-site operation, using a multidisciplinary team of professionals. We outlined internal team operations, as well as modes of remediation. Many types of behavior and learning problems were seen by our school health team during the first year of operation. It is important to recognize the multiplicity of diagnoses on individual elementary school children, as well as the differentiation of early organics from late functional primary causes. We need to reassess the delivery of school health care. The expansion of school health to include the multidisciplinary team approach to behavior and learning problem is a primary priority. We suggest using outside medical agencies for periodic physical illness.

Contractility of glycerinated Amoeba proteus and Chaos-chaos.

Immediate contact with large volumes of cold 50% (v/v) buffered glycerol preserved typical ameboid shape of Chaos chaos and Amoeba proteus with no visible distortions. These technics allowed determination of the contraction sites in these glycerinated models upon applications of ATP-Ca-Mg-solutions. The ectoplasmic tube was the main site of contraction. Preliminary EM investigations revealed thick and thin filaments, associated with the ectoplasmic tube near the plasma-lemma, which appeared to be the basis for the contractility of the ectoplasmic tube. There was no predominant contraction of the pseudopodial tips or the endoplasm in these models. The changes of volume were as much as 50%, and in some cases were not accompanied by any change in the length of the ameba; however, lengthwise contractions of the ectoplasmic tube in some amebae occurred to as much as 25%. The data substantiate a basic requirement of the ectoplasmic tube contraction theory of ameboid locomotion.
