A new amino acid solution (Aminopäd 5% and Aminopäd 10%) was used for intravenous feeding of 240 preterm and term newborn infants in 4 hospitals. Indications, dosages and infusion sites were up to the policies of the 4 hospitals. Plasma amino acid concentrations were measured in 491 samples which were obtained during steady 24 h infusions of the daily doses. Results were analyzed in four subgroups formed according to the postmenstrual ages of the patients at the time of blood withdrawal and showed good agreement with the reference values. Acute cholestasis was observed in 22 infants which could be explained by bacterial infection alone in 18 patients.
Maternal convulsions and severe fetal bradycardia resulted from the accidental intravascular injection of 0.5% bupivacaine for epidural anesthesia in preparation for caesarean section. Ventilation with oxygen, application of anticonvulsive drugs, relaxation and intubation was promptly performed followed by immediate caesarean section. The newborn was depressed at birth, recovered quickly and showed no neurologic deficits neither in the immediate postnatal period nor in neurobehaviour tests at the age of three months.
52 patients were followed up out of a total of 87 children with sacrococcygeal teratomas, within a period of 25 years, from three paediatric surgery hospitals and out of altogether 73 survivors. The results in 35 children where the operation had been performed more than three years ago, were classified as "late results". From this group, 18 children were followed up by clinical examination only, without detecting any dysfunctions. By the additional use of electromanometry of urinary bladder and rectum, however, bladder and rectum dysfunctions were seen in about 40% of 17 further children. These dysfunctions were partly myogenic and partly neurogenic in nature and were directly related to the size, tumour status and intrapelvic extension of the sacrococcygeal teratoma.
