[Serum level of thyroxin-binding globulin under oral contraception (author's transl)].

The use of oral contraceptives results in an increase in thyroid-binding-capacity in conformity with a change of results by T3/T4-tests. Using Laurell-electrophoresis and an anti-serum produced by Behringwerke the determination of the thyroid-binding-globulin (TBG) in serum is easy to handle. TBG was determined in serum from 137 women using oral contraceptives for more than 3 months. The apllication of oral contraceptives is followed by a statistically significant increase in the TBG level in serum. Thereby oral contraceptives change the TBG-level in a different degree. Preparations with a marked estrogen potency on the average effect a higher TBG-concentration than those with progesterone activity derived by menses-delay test. The difference of TBG-level is statistically significant. According by the increase of TBG-concentration in serum is caused by estrogen, the extent of the increase is modified by the progesterone component.

[Gynaecological laparoscopy (author's transl)].

The double puncture laparoscopy was abandoned in our department in favor of the single puncture technique. 187 diagnostic laparoscopies and 617 laparoscopic tubal ligations are reviewed. In 46% of the diagnostic laparoscopies, the findings were confirmed. In 40% of the diagnostic laparoscopies, normal findings were seen and in 11%, a different abnormal finding than suspected was found. In 3% of women, the findings could not be elucidated by laparoscopy. None of the 617 patients who underwent laparoscopic tubal sterilization have become pregnant. In 5% of the patients (0.6%) complications occurred. In 3 cases a laparotomy became necessary. In 2 cases there was bleeding from the fallopian tube or the greater omentum and in 1 case there was a trauma to the intestine. Laparoscopic tubal sterilization by the single puncture technique and coagulation without division of the tube only, is considered to be the lowest risk method of the laparoscopic tubal sterilizations.

Prenatal diagnosis of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

This paper reports on successful prenatal diagnosis of X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (AED) by means of light and electron microscopy on fetal skin biopsies obtained under fetoscopy. In the present family two brothers of the proband were severely affected with the full symptomatology of AED, the pregnant female and her mother revealed minor symptoms with patches of skin lacking vellus hair. Control of lesional skin of the affected family members by electron microscopy revealed no ultrastructural abnormalities. However, all biopsies lacked skin appendages including hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. The lack of pilosebaceous follicles can be used as a diagnostic criterion since these structures are fully developed in normal fetuses of 20 weeks whereas the development of sweat glands does not start before week 20 to 24 of fetal life. Skin biopsies were taken from various regions of the fetus at risk via fetoscopy in week 20 and processed for light and electron microscopy. All samples revealed complete absence of all skin appendages in contrast to a total of 61 non-AED fetuses. Thus positive prenatal diagnosis of AED was made and the pregnancy was terminated. Control investigations after abortion confirmed the diagnosis.

Gestosis and the psychosomatic phenomenon--an empirical investigation.

Patients suffering from psychosomatic diseases in the strict sense of the term (asthma, ulcers, colitis etc.) have characteristic object relations which we call the 'relation blanche'. The present investigation aims at finding out whether similar features can be observed in patients suffering from early and late gestosis. The results indicate that there is a definite connection between gestosis and the group of strictly psychosomatic diseases, thus confirming our hypothesis that gestosis does not primarily represent a neurotic conflict situation nor a psychotic breakdown.
