Nuclear cardiology.

Radionuclide cardiac imaging is a safe, noninvasive alternative to cardiac catheterization for observation and evaluation of cardiac wall motion and calculation of ejection fraction. Nuclide imaging offers a greater degree of sensitivity and specificity in detecting myocardial ischemia and infarction than do conventional electrocardiographic and cardiac enzyme studies. It is especially useful in problem cases. Myocardial infarction can usually be evaluated with respect to size and relative age of infarction.

Diagnosing tuberculosis by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

This case report exemplifies the effectiveness of percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy in confirming active pulmonary tuberculosis when conventional methods fail to document the disease. Aspiration biopsy of the suspicious lesion allowed direct examination, which demonstrated acid-fast bacilli. Culture of the aspirate grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy with CT guidance.

With computed tomographic guidance, 34 percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsies were obtained from various sites in 31 consecutive patients. Biopsy sites included the lung, liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, kidney, retroperitoneum, pelvis and bony structures. The overall diagnostic accuracy rate was 95 percent. The only complication was a moderate pneumothorax in one patient.
