Nursing science: the transformation of practice.

World-wide transformations in nursing practice are evolving as more nurses are embracing extant nursing theories and frameworks in order to fortify their unique contributions to the healthcare system. This article specifies the importance of and the ethical considerations arising when using nursing knowledge from within the school of thought of the discipline to guide practice. The ideas set forth are in stark contrast to the general nursing process with its medical model-driven diagnostic systems now proliferating in nursing practice in the global healthcare community. Both challenges and opportunities are present in the transformation of practice to a nursing knowledge base.

Joy-sorrow: a study using the Parse research method.

The purpose of this research was to uncover a structure of the lived experience of joy-sorrow using the Parse research method. Eleven women over 65 years of age volunteered to participate in the study by engaging in audio- and videotaped dialogues with the researcher about the phenomenon. The structure of the lived experience of joy-sorrow was found to be pleasure amid adversity emerging in the cherished contentment of benevolent engagements. Recommendations for further research and practice are specified.

Transforming research and practice with the human becoming theory.

This article focuses on the human becoming theory as a guide to the transformation of research and practice. New knowledge gained from human becoming research guides the nurse in practice. Different ways of being in true presence in living the human becoming theory are discussed.

Building knowledge through qualitative research: the road less traveled.

In this article, the author specifies the ontological, epistemological, and methodological differences among selected borrowed qualitative research methods and the three extant nursing research methods. A further distinction is made between nursing knowledge per se and general knowledge that can be used by nurses. Building nursing knowledge requires a connection with extant nursing theories and frameworks.

The human becoming theory: challenges in practice and research.

With rapid changes in science, technology, management, and economic planning, new challenges confront nursing. The author specifies some of the ramifications related to changes in the health care delivery system in general and in nursing in particular. The human becoming theory is discussed as a guide to nursing practice and research and is specified as a way to fortify nursing's identity. Some challenges for those living and learning the theory in practice and research are also discussed.

Quality of life for persons living with Alzheimer's disease: the human becoming perspective.

The purpose of this research was to ascertain the meaning of quality of life for persons living with Alzheimer's disease. The human becoming theory was the nursing perspective for this descriptive-exploratory study in which 25 people, designated as having mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, were asked to describe their quality of life. Findings showed that quality for these participants is a contentment with the remembered and now affiliations that arises amidst the tedium of the commonplace, as an easy-uneasy flow of transfiguring surfaces with liberating possibilities and confining constraints, while desiring cherished intimacies yields with inevitable distancing in the vicissitudes of life, as contemplating the ambiguity of the possibles emerges with yearning for successes in the moment. Implications for further research and practice are also discussed.

Reality: a seamless symphony of becoming.

Health care providers worldwide are visioning anew their commitment to service with an emphasis on person-focused care. Receivers and providers are frustrated with the ineffectiveness of the machine model health care delivery systems and are considering different possibilities. In this article the human becoming perspective as a guide to multidisciplinary health care delivery is discussed in light of discipline-specific goals.

Quality of life: sciencing and living the art of human becoming.

Quality of life, from the person's perspective, is the goal of the human becoming theory. Thus far, research on quality of life has been implemented from a totality paradigm perspective, excluding consideration of the human as a unitary being. The most valuable conclusion to be drawn from all the research is that quality of life cannot be quantified. This article specifies a different meaning of quality of life and points out ways of sciencing and living the art of nursing when quality of life is the goal.
