The use of simulation in planning the transportation of patients to hospitals following a disaster.

The characteristics of disaster management are outlined. Planning for the efficient management of a disaster is described. The level of preparedness for disasters can be increased using simulation models in conjunction with drills. With the simulation model, "what-if" analyses are performed to predict the consequences of conceivable scenarios. Emergency medical service personnel will find such computer simulation models a useful supplement to their standard training.

Determining the optimal physician mix in health maintenance organizations.

Described is a simulation model for forecasting the appropriate mix of physicians needed to meet health service demands of patients in managed health care organizations. The model can be used by executives of managed health care organizations to plan for physician staffing levels by specialty. Uncertainties such as changes in the population size served by the managed health care organization, new developments in health care delivery technologies and changing attitudes of the population regarding healthier lifestyles are considered in this model. Use of the model is illustrated in an example.

Re-engineering hospital emergency rooms: an information system approach.

The efficiency and effectiveness of hospital emergency rooms depend on the effectiveness of the information and communication system as well as on the physical facility itself. Describes the role of information technology in the design of contemporary ER systems. A computerized information board is one system that can enhance the operation of an ER facility. Describes the structure of this system, as well as its integration with other computerized systems. Also describes design features that may help to reduce ER delays/frustration. Because many types of professionals are involved in the daily operations of an ER facility, their input to the design is essential. For this reason, also describes a group decision-making process.

Determining the optimal mix of exercise activities using mathematical programming.

Several mathematical programming models designed to develop optimal exercise programs are described. The models can be adapted to various individuals so that unique objectives and constraints can be met. The models can be used to design individualized exercise programs for a wide variety of people. Models can meet the needs of those who exercise for recreational purposes, athletic achievements and/or rehabilitative purposes. As the objectives of an exercise program and the constraints on it change over time, individuals must occasionally review the relevancy of the objective function and constraints. The model must then be updated so that the updated optimal exercise program can be designed. An illustrative example that deals with the development of an overall fitness program for individuals exercising for recreational reasons is described.

A group decision making process for facility layout in hospital clinical laboratories.

While quantitative and computer-based models can be used for developing alternative clinical laboratory layout plans, consideration should be given to qualitative and personal factors during the layout finalization phase. Described here is a group decision making process used for planning facility layout. The process is applied to a case study Chemistry/Hematology department.
