Adolescent sexual behavior.

Pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents is considered a major problem in our society. The purpose of this study is to review the past five years of professional literature on adolescent sexuality to determine the factors which influence this social phenomenon as well as effective interventions. The importance of the family and religion on sexual attitudes and behaviors, how sexual activity is related to other age-related behaviors and delinquency, the relationship between early coital behaviors and the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and attitudes toward contraception and abstinence are discussed. Also addressed are the possible psychological effects of sexual activity on the development of the adolescent.

Counseling the Hispanic male adolescent.

A rationale is given for providing counseling to Hispanic male adolescents. Characteristics of this population are discussed and specific techniques for counseling are suggested.

Treating bulimia.

Bulimia has been recognized as a distinct eating disorder which is affecting a growing number of young adolescent women. It is characterized by the consumption of huge amounts of food followed by some form of purging, usually vomiting, in order to lose the gained weight. Most bulimics keep their activities secret, which makes diagnosis difficult. The counselor or therapist who is aware of the secretive nature of the disorder will be more alert to the symptoms. Most bulimics experience cognitive distortions relating to food, weight loss, eating, and dieting. The purpose of this paper is to identify and to discuss treatment of some of these irrational cognitions through the use of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional interventions. The importance of providing nutrition information and realistic diet practices is also noted. A group treatment approach is briefly addressed in dealing with the bulimic's problems of isolation, shame, and social acceptance.

Adolescent pregnancy: contributing factors, consequences, treatment, and plausible solutions.

Adolescence, although not always necessarily a period of extreme stress, is a time of profound physical changes which increase the adolescent's awareness of and interest in sexual behavior. This issue of sexuality, which begins in early adolescence, creates new challenges to personal and gender identity formation as the person matures. Sexual maturation is a three-fold process, requiring growth in understanding of oneself as a sexual being, in the ability to handle interpersonal relationships effectively, and in the capacity to plan behavior in view of future outcomes and present problems. A current concern is that today's adolescents, including early adolescents, may be making important life choices such as parenthood before they are developmentally ready for such roles (Chilman, 1980). This paper deals with pregnancy in adolescents and modes of responding to this phenomenon by those in the counseling and other helping professions.

Adolescent substance abuse.

We have become a drug-oriented society. Cummings (1979), citing evidence from the National Institute of Drug Abuse, reports that one of every eleven adult Americans suffers from a severe addictive problem. Drug addition is epidemic among teenagers; one of every six teenagers suffers from a severe addictive problem. This paper focuses on adolescent drug/substance abuse.

Diagnosing behavior-disordered early adolescents as a function of cultural differences.

The tendency of non-Indian teachers to rate American Indian early adolescents (11-year olds) as behaviorally disordered more frequently than similarly behaving non-Indian children is examined. To test this hypothesis, the observed number of students rated as behavior-disordered by non-Indian teachers were compared with the expected number. A chi-square test revealed no significant tendency for this pattern to occur chi 2 = 2.04 less than .05, df = 1).

Adolescent prostitution.

Although juvenile prostitution has been documented since antiquity, its rise since 1970 has been overwhelming. Newsweek (1978) reported an alarming increase in arrests of prostitutes under the age of 25 in New York from 24% to 74% in the previous 10 years. In Boston the average age of prostitutes is 20 years old; in Miami it is 18. The purpose of this paper is to explore the conditions which lead to teenagers' becoming prostitutes, and how our institutions and legal system deal with them.

Anorexia nervosa: adolescent starvation by choice.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder which affects people of all classes and ages but in particular adolescent girls. The symptoms, characteristics, family, and modes of treatment of the typical anorectic patient are discussed.

Test bias and the culturally different early adolescent.

Test bias has been defined as a phenomenon in which the effects of a given test result in negative outcomes for a given person because that person is identified with a certain group (Sedlacek, 1976). As this paper is specifically concerned with test bias and the culturally different, the latter should be defined as individuals "from lower socioeconomic groups who may also be members of a minority group" (Brown, no date). On IQ tests, blacks generally score one standard deviation below whites, and low-income Hispanics also score below average (Laosa, 1976). Test bias can be manifested in all or any of the following: 1) content bias, 2) atmosphere bias, and/or 3) use bias (Sedlacek, 1976). A discussion of each follows.
