[Comparison of the value of general and oblique images and whole lung tomography in a high kilovoltage technic in the detection of pulmonary coin lesions].

The ranking of high kvp pa. and lateral chest x-ray, left and right oblique films and whole lung tomography in the detection of pulmonary coin-shaped lesions is compared. Out of a total number of 327 coin lesions in 115 patients detected by high kvp whole lung tomography, only 52% were found on pa and lateral chest films. Additional oblique films improved the score to 64%. Oblique films proved to be especially helpful in detecting pleural lesions. Although CT has a higher sensitivity in detecting nodules (with decreasing specificity) whole lung tomography will continue to play an important role in the management of tumour patients.

Diagnosis, Differential↗

[Program for calculating diagnostic x-ray spectra].

A code written in BASIC is described which calculates x-ray spectra for tube voltages from 20 to 150 kVDC. Data for the spectral distribution, the mean photon energy, kerma in air, mean energy of the kerma distribution together with 1. and 2. half-value layers for aluminum are obtained. Numerical values for the differential energy intensity function and the Thomson-Whiddington constant were taken from Birch et al. (6). For target angles up to 30 degrees agreement between calculated and experimental data is good. For larger angles some discrepancies appear which could be either due to increased filtration by tungsten (surface roughness) or limited applicability of the data used. The program is tailored to be run on a personal computer.

[A gamma-ray sensitometer for film-screen combinations in diagnostic radiology].

On account of the high cost of standardised x-ray equipment, a 5 Ci Am-241 gamma ray source (59.6 keV) was used for setting up a sensitometer. The exposure rate at the film cassette is adjusted by means of a variable distance (5-250 cm) from the source. Using exposure times of 2 sec, screens with sensitivities greater than 500 can be measured. The properties of the sensitometer are described.

Radiographic Image Enhancement↗

[Reduction of radiation dose by the use of carbon fiber cassettes].

A new type of radiographic cassette, reinforced by PEEK-CFK is discussed. The amount of reduction of radiation dose by this cassette was evaluated by means of an experimental physical and clinical trial. Dose reduction may reach 30% depending on the type of examination and the organ studied. An increase of contrast of the radiographs could not be verified. This type of cassette can be recommended for routine clinical use.

[Does the fibrin glue accelerate the healing of tendons? (author's transl)].

The question of an accelerating influence of the fibrin adhesive (Immuno AG, Vienna) on healing has been investigated in the suture of heel tendons of 69 rabbits. The achilles-tendon cut through was anastomosed in typical way, but besides in the one group a homologous fibrinogen-cryoprecipitate was applied. The histological and biomechanical evaluations of the anastomosis were carried out after one, two and four weeks. By means of the fibrin adhesive the loading capacity of the healing tendons could not be accelerated. The data of rupture stress were in the control group after one week 1.65 kg (+/- 1.14) and after two weeks 8.66 kg (+/- 1.38) and in the fibrin group 2.13 kg (+/-1.28) respectively 7.76 kg (+/-2.19). The difference between the two groups is not significant. Four weeks postoperatively the test could not be carried out, for the anchorage of the tendons at the material testing machine was not possible for over 15 kg stress-strain. Histologically a distinct difference of the repair process of the tendons operated on could not be seen in the two groups either.

Achilles Tendon↗

Radiation exposure due to 99mTc and 131I manipulated in syringes.

Dose rates around and at the surface of disposable polypropylene syringes of 1 and 2 ml volume filled with 99mTc and 131I solutions were determined by thermoluminescence dosimetry. Data for the efficacy of 0.5 and 1 mm lead shielding of 99mTc and for the dose contribution due to beta- -radiation from 131I are given.
