The hematological aspects of the original case of Rhmod are reported. The subject, as in other reported cases, had a chronic hemolytic anemia characterized by stomatocytosis, reduced osmotic fragility, and abnormal autohemolysis correctable with the addition of glucose. The 51Cr red cell survival studies showed the spleen to be the preferential site of red cell destruction and splenectomy produced a dramatic improvement in red cell survival. The topic of Rh deficiency syndrome (Rhnull and Rhmod) is briefly reviewed with regard to the number of cases reported, to genetic aspects, to the hematological findings, and to the results of splenectomy.
We describe the case of a woman aged 34 years infected with the human immunodeficiency virus and whose illness was complicated by visceral leishmaniasis that ultimately led to her death.
Addition of red blood cells hemolyzed in the presence of dilute plasma in quantities equivalent to as little as 0.2% hemolysis of red blood cells in whole blood caused significant elevation in the apparent value of IgG associated with platelets (PAIgG) isolated from the preparation. Addition of hemolysate to plasma containing low concentrations of platelets, simulating that obtained from thrombocytopenic patients, caused more striking elevations in apparent PAIgG. Centrifugation of platelet-rich plasma containing hemolysate through a 30% solution of Percoll restored the value of PAIgG essentially to normal. Additional studies using simulated patient whole blood samples anticoagulated with EDTA yielded similar results. The apparent elevation of PAIgG in these preparations appears to result from IgG-bearing membranous material and microspherocytes that co-isolate with platelets separated from blood by conventional methods. Caution should be used in interpreting the results of PAIgG measurements on platelets isolated from blood samples in which even minimal in vitro hemolysis has occurred.

The monoclonal antibodies HMFG-1 and HMFG-2 are directed against different epitopes on a large molecule in the human milk fat globule and are also expressed on breast tumors. Here we examine the relative intensity of staining of the two antibodies in formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections from malignant and benign mammary lesions. Most ductal carcinomas and their lymph node metastases stained more strongly with HMFG-2 whereas primary lobular carcinomas are more variable but the majority of their lymph node metastases stained more strongly with HMFG-1. Western blots of gel separated extracts of formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tumor tissue, stained with the antibodies in an ELISA assay, show that the molecular weight of components expressing the antigenic determinants varies. Smaller molecular weight components recognised by HMFG-2 and present in metastatic tumors may be lost during tissue processing. To assess the importance of the molecular weight parameter in tumor classification and prognosis it will be necessary to use frozen tissue.

The authors describe five white patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Four patients were older than 65 years. All cases presented with a short clinical course and advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Clinical manifestations included asthenia, weight loss, peripheral and abdominal lymphadenopathy. One case showed tonsillar involvement and subcutaneous lymph node enlargement; hepatomegaly was present in four cases, two of them with splenomegaly. Only one case presented peripheral lymphocytosis and antibodies to human T-leukemia virus. Although three cases were classified as diffuse mixed lymphomas and two as poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphomas, there were some common characteristics: diffuse infiltration by different proportions of small lymphoid cells and large immunoblasts, some of them multinucleated and similar to Reed-Sternberg cells; accumulation of histiocytes, plasmacytosis, eosinophilia, venular proliferation and compartmentalization were also found. Bone marrow infiltration was observed in two patients. Results of monoclonal markers showed four cases to be OKT4+ and the other OKT8+. The morphologic and immunologic characteristics of these patients were typical and similar to those reported from other geographical areas.

A monoclonal antibody (D5) raised against affinity-purified cytosol estradiol receptor (REC) from human myometrium has been used to stain human tissues by means of an indirect immunoperoxidase method. Good staining was obtained with ethanol-, glutaraldehyde-, or Carnoy's-fixed material but not with formalin or Bouin's fixation. Cytoplasmic staining of human breast tumors exhibited a highly significant correlation (P less than 0.001) with REC assayed by conventional estradiol-binding assay provided that allowance was made for both staining intensity and cellularity of the tumor; no correlation existed with soluble progesterone receptor content. Both patient age and tumor differentiation influenced staining patterns in the same way as did REC content. Cultured REC-positive human breast tumor cell lines (MCF-7, ZR-75-1, and CA-2) showed positive staining as did cultured epithelium from human milk. Epithelia in normal breast and fibroadenoma exhibited variable staining that rarely reached the intensity seen in REC-positive tumor cells. The staining patterns of human normal endometrium, myometrium, fallopian tube, ectocervix, endocervix, and ovary and neoplastic endometrium and ovary are described. In every situation thus far examined only cytoplasmic staining has been observed.

Twelve parallel group, randomized, double-blind studies of nomifensine's safety and efficacy in the treatment of depressed patients were combined into three pools according to common protocols. This approach permitted evaluation of 1) efficacy results for studies with moderate-sized pools of patients, 2) the degree to which efficacy was generalizable to depressed patients in the general population, and 3) the conditions under which pooled active vs. active (imipramine vs. nomifensine) studies could be regarded as pivotal in support of efficacy. Results showed that nomifensine's superiority over placebo was generalizable to patients with a wide range of characteristics, including age 60 years or older. An appropriate statistical profile of more pronounced nomifensine responders would include patients with a duration of present episode less than 4 months who are acutely depressed, exhibit more severe symptoms, and have been previously hospitalized or treated with other psychotropic medications. A comprehensive assessment and power analysis of the pooled active vs. active studies provided strong evidence for comparability of nomifensine and imipramine.
Diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction in the dog has been rare. Few techniques for this diagnosis are available. Electro-olfactography, an electrophysiologic technique for evaluating the function of the olfactory mucosa, was developed as a relatively noninvasive technique for diagnosis of functional abnormalities of the olfactory mucosa in mesatocephalic canines. The technique was validated by several experiments and normative values for the electro-olfactogram were obtained.
