Effect of Abscisic Acid on Uptake and Metabolism of [H]Gibberellin A(1) and [H]Pseudogibberellin A(1) by Barley Half-seeds.

Uptake and metabolism of 1,2-[(3)H]gibberellin A(1) ([(3)H]GA(1), I) and its 3-hydroxy epimer ([(3)H]pseudoGA(1), II) by barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) half-seeds were measured after 24 hours of incubation, in the presence or absence of abscisic acid in the media. Uptake of both compounds was enhanced by abscisic acid, and abscisic acid enhanced the extent of metabolism of [(3)H]GA(1). However, [(3)H]pseudoGA(1) was not metabolized, even in the presence of abscisic acid. The significance of the stereo-chemistry of the 3-hydroxyl position is discussed.

Characterization of anti-IL-1 alpha autoantibodies in the sera from healthy humans.

Previously, we reported that pooled normal human serum contained anti-IL-1 alpha autoantibodies. Further characterization studies have been undertaken with sera from individual healthy humans. Molecular exclusion chromatography demonstrated that 9 of 38 test sera contained anti-IL-1 alpha autoantibodies that specifically bound 125I-IL-1 alpha. The autoantibodies formed immune complexes composed of either one IgG or two IgG molecules bound to one 125I-IL-1 alpha molecule. The data suggest that the autoantibodies recognize at least two separate antigenic sites on IL-1 alpha. The autoantibodies neutralized IL-1 alpha induced IL-2 secretion by mouse thymocytes (EL-4 NOB-1). Further, in an in vitro competitive receptor binding assay, the autoantibodies completely blocked 125I-IL-1 alpha binding to recombinant human IL-1 receptor expressed on CHO cells. Our previous studies have established a correlation between inhibition of 125I-IL-1 alpha binding to receptor bearing cells and neutralization of IL-1 bioactivity in vitro and in vivo. These data suggest that development of anti-IL-1 alpha autoantibodies may play a significant role in modulating the effects of high local or systemic concentrations of IL-1 alpha.

Telehealth and communication technologies in health: summary and action plan.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid innovations and improvements in communication technologies have opened many new channels for health education and delivery, as well as disaster management. Theme 2 examined the role and applicability of these technologies to Disaster Medicine and Management and the various issues involved in their use. METHODS: Details of the methods used are provided in the introductory paper. The chairs moderated all presentations and produced a summary that was presented to an assembly of all of the delegates. The chairs then presided over a workshop that resulted in the generation of a set Action Plans that then were reported to the collective group of all delegates. RESULTS: Main points developed during the presentations and discussion included harnessing convergence, seeking interoperability, building partnerships and making it appropriate. This group identified four Principles of Action underlying its plan: (1) investigate possibilities, (2) identify stakeholders, (3) invite participation, and (4) involve discussants in activities. DISCUSSION: Action plans were categorized into three areas that included "thinking globally, acting regionally", forming a telehealth advisory group, and increasing corporate partnerships. CONCLUSIONS: Technology is opening many opportunities that have applications in disaster management. To optimize benefits, goals and standards must be agreed upon and implemented.
