A case of sarcoid pericarditis is presented. The associated pericardial effusion was a transudate with a low complement level. Investigating the prevalence of pericardial effusions in sarcoid by echocardiography, we found small effusions in 19 percent of 48 consecutive patients with sarcoid. Additionally, ten previously reported cases of symptomatic parietal pericardial sarcoid are reviewed.
Rats were exposed to the inhalation of coal dust from either Utah (low prevalence coalworkers' pneumoconiosis (CWP)) or Pennsylvania (high prevalence CWP). Rats were sacrificed, the lungs removed and lavaged to obtain free cells. The number of alveolar macrophages recovered from rats inhaling these two coal dusts (exposures up to 4 months) was not remarkably different from the number recovered from rats inhaling filtered room air. This is in contrast to results obtained after intratracheal intubation of the dust. The capacity of the lavaged cells to phagocytize and kill bacteria decreased after exposure to either dust. The activity of certain enzymes also decreased.

A 42-year-old-man had focal left hand motor seizures. MR studies demonstrated a right posterior frontal brain tumor. Functional MRI was performed, localizing the motor cortex posterior to the lesion. The functional images were integrated with a neurosurgical navigation computer. A real-time intraoperative display of the anatomic and functional images was produced, registered to a neurosurgical probe. Excellent correlation was demonstrated between the functional maps and invasive electrophysiologic mapping performed at the time of craniotomy.
One thousand one hundred and seventy cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) samples from clinically diagnosed meningitis patients were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic examination. CSF samples were also cultured. Five percent CSF samples were positive for bacterial (4.3%) and fungal (0.7%) organisms. Gram positivity was observed in 6.4% samples. The percentage of bacterial isolates was highest in newborn and infants (6.1%) and (4.3%) in patients of 1-12 years age group. Cryptococcus species were isolated from 8 adult patients. Among Gram positive bacterial isolates, coagulase negative Staphylococci was highest (8%), followed by Pneumococci (6%) and B-haemolytic Streptococci (2%). Among Gram negative bacilli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was predominant (42%) followed by Klebsiella species (20%) though Klebsiella was predominant in newborns and infants.
A diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of ovary was made in a 60 year old female presenting with generalised weakness and abdominal lump. On clinical examination, a hard, big mass with some cystic areas was found occupying the pelvic cavity. Chest X-ray revealed presence of metastases. Deranged renal function and structure due to extrinsic pressure were evident on pyelography and USG. USG also suggested the ovarian origin of the mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was suggestive of leiomyosarcoma. Laparotomy was carried out for excision of tumor along with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy. Post-operatively renal functions normalized. A course of radiotherapy was given. At 6 months' follow-up, abdomino-pelvic sonography was normal but lung metastases were found to be enlarged. The patient was asked to follow up for chemotherapy but did not come. She died 18 months after treatment, as revealed through correspondence.
In order to predict possibility of local control in carcinoma of the oesophagus by radiotherapy, the relationship between the x-ray findings before and after radiotherapy were analyzed in 55 irradiated cases. In the superficial or proliferative type on x-ray before treatment, local control was observed in 87% cases with dose of 40 Gy, whereas in the ulcerative or infiltrative type it was observed in 20% cases. Radiation response is remarkably good in proliferative and superficial lesions seen in oesophagogram.
