An in vitro recombinant ColE1-cos lambda deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule, pKY96, has 70% of the length of lambda phage DNA. The process of lambda phage-mediated transduction of pKY96 generated a small amount of transducing phage particles containing ColE1-cos lambda DNA molecules of 80 or 101% of the length of lambda phage DNA, in addition to those containing original pKY96 DNA molecules. The newly isolated larger plasmid DNAs were transduced 100 times more efficiently than pKY96 DNA. Their structures were compared with that of a prototype pKY96 DNA, and the mechanism of the formation of these molecules is discussed.

Linear coefficients of thermal expansion (beta) of twelve restorative composite resins, one Bis-GMA based resin and one self-curing acrylic resin were determined in the temperature range of 4 to 60 degrees C under the dry and the wet conditions on a thermomechanical analyzer. The results were as follows. 1) The thermal expansion curves obtained were nonlinear, and the transition appeared at about 40 degrees C. 2) beta reduced with the elapse of stored time and the number of times of measuring run. It appears that these phenomena were attributable to decrease of monomer remained in each case. 3) beta under the wet condition was larger than one under the dry condition, when specimens were stored for 20 days in each condition at 37 degrees C. Values of beta for composites ranged from 16.1 to 35.3 x 10(-6)/degrees C under the dry condition and from 18.1 to 55.4 x 10(-6)/degrees C under the wet condition. 4) beta of composites varied with filler content and kinds of filler and resin used. Value of beta reduced with increase of filler content, and was lower for Bis-GMA based composite resin than for MMA based composite resin.
The various mechanical and dimensional properties of seven thermosetting methacrylic resins for crown and one heat-curing methacrylic resin as the control were investigated. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The water sorption, namely amount of sorption water and linear expansion by water sorption of hydrophobic poly-bis-MEPP resins were 50 to 70% of that of the control. But hydrophilic poly-EDMA resins indicated the water sorption about 1 to 1.5 times as much as the control. And a poly-UDMA resin was also hydrophilic as poly-EDMA resins, indicated about 1.3 times as much as the control. 2. The properties of poly-bis-MEPP resins were more excellent than that of poly-EDMA resins especially in the wet condition, at least were equal. 3. A poly-UDMA resin contained so-called organic composite fillers, indicated more excellent properties than other resins on hardness, abrasion resistance, linear coefficient of thermal expansion, compressive strength and bending strength in the dry condition. But, in the wet condition, some of these properties of a poly-UDMA resin were approximately equal to those of other resins.
Optical diffraction analysis was done on the electron micrographs of tubular structures found in cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 2. By this method, the helical arrangement of subunits forming a tubular structure was demonstrated.

The structure and the color forming mechanism on the pressuring sheet "Prescale" were explained. Some dental applications of the pressure measuring sheet, such as the measurement of biting pressure and balance during normal and unilateral biting, were examined.

In order to clarify the relationship between hyperamylasemia and clinical states in chronic pancreatitis, serum amylase isozymes were studied in 39 cases of chronic pancreatitis including 13 cases of alcoholic pancreatitis. Hyperamylasemia in chronic pancreatitis is generally due to high pancreatic type isoamylase (P-amylase) activity in acute exacerbation, sometimes accompanied by a transient elevation in salivary type isoamylase (S-amylase). On remission, however, hyperamylasemia due to high S-amylase activity has been found. These were cases of advanced alcoholic pancreatitis, which exhibited a characteristic pattern of low serum P-amylase and high serum S-amylase activities while the clearance ratio (Cam/Ccr) was normal despite high S-amylase activity. It should be noted that hyperamylasemia in chronic pancreatitis may be caused by high S-amylase activity in addition to high P-amylase activity, especially in alcoholic pancreatitis.
Metacercariae of the trematode Microphalloides japonicus (Osborn, 1919) were cultivated in various media to gravid adults, and the results were compared with those in vivo. A few eggs were produced in the uterus even in balanced salt solution, although cultivation in Eagle's MEM and NCTC 109 media was much better. Addition of heat-inactivated serum resulted in even better development. Encysted metacercariae also produced eggs in some media, but most of them were incomplete and without shells.

The fine structure of filamentous structures and lattice-like structures found in herpes simplex virus type 2-infected cells was studied. By specimen tilting experiments, it was demonstrated that the lattice-like structures were the cross-sectional views of the tubular structures and the filamentous structures were the longitudinal sections. The observation in negatively stained preparations of isolated tubular structures revealed that the structure was constructed by regular array of ring shaped elements. A hypothetical model is presented for tubular structures constructed on the basis of the present findings. The tubular structures appeared as early as 6 hours after infection and reached a maximum at 12 hours.
Comparative assessments of the endocrine and exocrine functions of the pancreas associated with gallstone pancreatitis or alcoholic pancreatitis were performed in a series of 86 patients, 20 with cholelithiasis, 12 with chronic alcoholism, 24 with chronic gallstone pancreatitis and 30 with chronic alcoholic pancreatitis and 32 healthy subjects were served as controls. The patients with cholelithiasis showed exocrine hypersecretion of the pancreas. In the patients with gallstone pancreatitis, all the assessed parameters of exocrine function were depressed. On the other hand, no pancreatic exocrine dysfunction was dispalyed in cases with chronic alcoholism. In the non-calcifying alcoholic pancreatitis, both the volume output and the the maximum concentration and output of bicarbonate were diminished but depression in amylase output was not seen. All these parameters were lowered in patients with calcifying pancreatitis. Elevation of hexosamine concentration in the pancreatic juice was evident in alcoholic pancreatitis as compared with gallstone pancreatitis, being particularly prominent in cases of non-calcifying pancreatitis. Patients with alcoholic pancreatitis were observed to secrete viscous pancreatic juice richer in amylase and hexosamine content, than those in the patients with gallstone pancreatitis. Endocrine dysfunction of the pancreas is more frequent and intense in alcoholic pancreatitis than in gallstone pancreatitis.
Adult athymic nude mice were protected against the lethality of intracerebral infection with LCM virus. Although the multiplication of LCM virus in the brain was almost equal between nu/nu and nu/+ mice, the delayed hypersensitivity reaction was not evoked in nu/nu mice as evidenced by foot pad reaction.
