[Feasibility of mosquito control using insecticide-impregnated bednets in rural areas of Cameroon].

The feasibility of using impregnated bednets in a malaria control strategy has been evaluated in a rural area of Cameroon. The benefit is well perceived by the population in terms of protection against nuisance but not in terms of prevention of the disease. The correct use of bednets is, however, unsatisfactory. The material should be adapted to the various sleeping accommodations, and efforts for education and information directed towards the potential users should be intensified.

[Femoral anteversion in upper femoral epiphysiolysis in adolescents. Apropos of 25 cases].

CT-scan examinations have been performed in 25 children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and in 127 children in an out-patients orthopaedic consultation. A low femoral anteversion (FA) was present in SCFE. This morphological abnormality, in association with other factors, could explain the production of SCFE at the moment of the most important fragility of the upper femoral growth plate, which is puberty. A statistical analysis showed that the risk of SCFE was distinctly greater, even for the contralateral hip when FA was low.

[Chemoprophylaxis of Plasmodium falciparum malaria by a combination of 100 mg of chloroquine and 200 mg of proguanil per day in a zone III of chloroquine resistance (Gabon). Study of 431 French soldiers].

Incidence of P. falciparum malaria in french non-immune soldiers serving in Gabon for four months has increased from 21% in 1987 to 37% in 1988. Since 1989, in a first step, the personal protection measures were reinforced. Thereafter, the usual chemoprophylaxis (chloroquine 100 mg daily) was replaced by a daily association of chloroquine 100 mg and proguanil 200 mg. A 85% decrease of malaria incidence was observed in 431 soldiers. The effects of the personal protection strengthening and of the new chemoprophylaxis can be evaluated to be respectively responsible for 50% and 71% decrease. Among the secondary effects, gastric pain was the most frequent, but it was never a cause of chemoprophylaxis stopping. The mouth ulcer frequency was far lower than that elsewhere reported. No significant biological abnormalities could be related to the chloroquine-proguanil association.

Treatment regimens of STD patients in Cameroon: a need for intervention.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The management of patients with STDs is an important element in the fight against AIDS. To define effective STD control strategies a survey was carried out to understand the attitudes of STD patients and the treatment regimens they follow. STUDY DESIGN: The study was based on interviews with male patients with typical symptoms of urethritis leaving private pharmacies in Douala and Yaoundé. Each case was asked to answer a questionnaire comprising the origin of the therapeutic choice, the nature and cost of the treatment and any advice received. RESULTS: Fifty-six men in Douala and 86 in Yaoundé were recruited. The sources of prescription were dispensary (38%, 54%) private MD (9%, 15%) pharmacist (7%, 9%), diverse (46%, 21%) in Douala and Yaoundé respectively. At least two medicines were recommended in three-quarters of the patients. The most frequently used antibiotics were aminoglycosides and penicillin. The cost of the treatment ranged from $3.50 to $110. The more "medical" the initial visit, the higher was the cost of the prescribed treatment. In Douala only 49% of the prescribers advised the patients to treat their partners and condom promotion was done by 21% of the prescribers. CONCLUSION: This survey provides useful data on the care of patients with urethritis. Such surveys are simple, rapid, reasonable inexpensive (about $10,000) and contribute to the efficient design of STD control strategies. In addition, repeat survey to monitor the impact of the strategies are simple to carry out.

Acetabular anteversion in children.

Acetabular anteversion analysis was performed in 143 normal children, who ranged in age from 1 to 15 years. The mean anteversion value, which remained constant during growth, was 13 degrees.

[One-year assessment of the cholera epidemic in Madagascar, from March 1999 to March 2000].

The seventh cholera pandemic reached Madagascar in March 1999, 30 years after its appearance in East Africa. Two waves of infection were observed during the first year. The second wave was the stronger of the two. It occurred in the warm rainy season and spread over six provinces of the country. The incidence of cholera was from 0.1% to 2% and the hospital case fatality rate was between less than 2% and 6%, depending on the geographical area and the period. This outbreak has raised the awareness of communities and their leaders with respect to the environmental, practical and cultural factors that increase the risk of diseases transmitted by feces.

[Short term projections of infection by the human immunodeficiency (HIV) and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Cameroon].

As of December 1991, Cameroon has reported 827 cases of AIDS. The results from the Sentinel Surveillance System show a seroprevalence of 1.3% HIV1 among pregnant women, 2.5% in people attending STD clinic and 3.5% in tuberculosis patients. The World Health Organization projection model was used to make a short term projection of HIV infection and AIDS cases. Results show that the number estimated of HIV infected populations varies between 24 to 45,000 people by the year 1995. Results show also an estimated 8,500 cumulative AIDS cases. Even in a low prevalence country as Cameroon the impact of the HIV epidemic is important and will result in a burden for the health care system.

[Towards dracunculosis eradication in Cameroon?].

Dracunculiasis is endemic in the Mayo-Sava region, Province of Extreme North, Cameroon. Its incidence has been reduced by half (from 778 cases in 1990 to 394 cases in 1991) thanks to the national eradication program (wells, distribution of filters, use of temephos to treat water collections, sanitary education, cases containment).
