Among 6 patients with small intra-ductal carcinomas of the breast two had local recurrences of cancer following unilateral subcutaneous mastectomy. We therefore limit subcutaneous mastectomy to pre-cancerous conditions and then use a bilateral subcutaneous mastectomy with augmentation mammoplasty. Our methods and results in 28 cases are described. We think that the removal of approximately 95% of the breast tissue is enough assurance to the patient that no cancer will develop later. The patients are happy with the cosmetic results and abandon their cancerophobia generated by long term diagnostic observation.

The hearts of 49 patients undergoing hip-replacement surgery were auscultated and the characteristic sounds of air emboli were heard in 15 of them--30% of the total. This finding was confirmed in the later patients by the use of an ultrasonic transducer to detect air emboli. Routine auscultation of the heart during the insertion of acrylic bone cement and prosthesis is recommended.
Examination of the thyroid hormones levels of genetically obese mice (ob /ob) and their lean littermates (Ob/-) revealed high concentration of 3,5,3' triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) in obese mice reflecting probably an increased of peripheral L-thyroxine (T4) deiodination to T3. During starvation, peripheral T4 metabolism is shunted from activating (T3) to inactivating pathway (3,3',5' triiodo-L-thyronine, rT3) in both groups of animals.
Propham and Chloropropham disturb the several mitotic figure components of proliferating human lymphocytes. The tubular structures, affected in preference by the C.I.P.C., become abnormal, disorganized or disappear. The chromosomal changes (protuberances, absence of condensation and chromosomal bridges) are principally given by I.P.C. I.P.C. and C.I.P.C. lead to the disappearance of the endoplasmic reticulum. These effects are correlated with the action of the two pesticides on DNA and protein synthesis.

A physiotherapeutical indoor swimmingpool in a hospital was inspected for the presence of potentially pathogenic Limax-amoebae. In cultures inoculated with material from water samples and from cotton swabs taken from the bottom and walls of the pool the following species of Limax-amoebae could be cloned and identified: Naegleria gruberi, Hartmannella vermiformis, Acanthamoeba castellamii, A. polyphaga, A. palestinesis, Vannella mira, V. platypodia, Platyamoeba stenopodia, Echinamoebia exundans and Vexillifera bacilipedes. Two further strains of unidentified Acanthamoeba and 1 of the genus Vanella were observed. 3 to 5 species remained unidentified. Beyond this numerous monotrichous flagellates and Colpoda steini, a holotrichous ciliate, multiplied in water samples and agar plates. The concentration of the total number of pelagic amoebae increased from 10 to 20/liter one week after exchange of the pool-water to 100-1000/liter after 3 weeks and finally to more than 10(4) per liter after a period of 2 months. The isolated strains of Nageleria, Acanthamoeba and Hartmannella were tested for pathogenicity by means of the intranasal mice inoculation test. The clones of Naegleria were submitted to a temperature- and salt-tolerance test. All of the strains tested by these methods proved to be nonpathogenic.
The attachment of E. histolytica trophozoites from monoxenic TPS-medium to glass surfaces was studied at different temperatures and pH values and in the presence of cytochalasin B, colchicine, and vinblastine. At pH 7.0 and at 36 degrees C optimal adhesion rates of the amebae were observed in the range from 80% to 95%. Marked inhibition of adhesion was noted at higher concentrations of cytochalasin B. The adhesion rate was reduced to 50% by 50 micrograms/ml CB. Higher dosages successively prevented nearly all adhesion. Colchicine was without any effect. Vinblastine had a certain low effect but only at very high dosage. The observations are consistent with the assumption that the adhesion process is at least partially mediated by cytochalasin-sensitive contractile microfilaments, whereas microtubuli are obviously not involved in the cell-substrate adhesion.

The changes observed in trophozoites of Toxoplasma gondii after deep-freeze preservation were examined by electron microscopy. Toxoplasmas (strain BK) from peritoneal exudate of infected NMRI mice were supended in Ringer's solution, deep-frozen in liquid nitrogen with 5% dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO), and compared after thawing with control samples with and without the addition of DMSO. Slight structural changes such as widening of endoplasmic reticulum, formation of fissures in the cytoplasm, and loosening of chromatin were only observed in some of the free toxoplasmas of the DMSO control. Among the deep-frozen parasites, about 1/5 of the free stages showed no or only slight morphological changes. In contrast to this, almost all intracellular forms found in macrophages showed lesions. The most remarkable change was a partial destruction of the inner cell membrane complex. The outflow of ribosome-containing protoplasm with ballon-like swelling of the outer elementary membrane was observed as a consequence of this frequent lesion. The outflow of protoplasm induced a drastic decrease in the electronic density of the whole cytoplasm. Other characteristic degenerative signs were vacuolation of cytoplasm up to formation of great optically empty spaces, widening of the perinuclear space, swelling of mitochondria, disintegration of rhoptria, micronemata, and Golgi zone, coarse-plaque loosening, and displacement of electron-dense areas of the nucleus up to disintegration with maintenance of the karyoplasm. In some almost completely disintegrated trophozoites, enlarged mitochondria with remarkable electronic density were observed. Apart from the cell membrane, the conoid was the longest-persisting organelle. The alterations observed after deep-freezing permit the conclusion that the free cells, which were only slightly impaired or not at all, remained infective.

This work was undertaken to study the action exerted by thyroid hormones on mitochondria. By day 6 after thyroidectomy, the respective activities of two inner-membrane enzymes--succinate and beta-hydroxybutyrate cytochrome c reductases--had already dropped by 32 and 50%, whereas, in the outer membrane, the activity of rotenone-insensitive NADH-cytochrome c reductase did not change significantly. The decrease in the activity of the inner-membrane enzymes closely followed the disappearance of T3 and T4 from serum. 10 h after administration of 25 micrograms/100 g T3 to thyroidectomized rats, the activity of succinate and beta-hydroxybutyrate cytochrome c reductases and the oxygen consumption rate with succinate or beta-hydroxybutyrate were significantly increased, while, in the outer membrane, the activity of monoamine oxidase and rotenone-insensitive NADH-cytochrome c reductase remained unchanged. In the thyroidectomized rat, L-[3H]leucine incorporation in vivo is diminished in all the liver mitochondrial proteins, and especially in two constituents of MW 19 000 and 28 000. The radioactivity of these two components is also decreased in the normal rat treated with chloramphenicol, a specific inhibitor of mitochondrial protein synthesis. L-[14C]leucine incorporation in isolated liver mitochondria was significantly increased in the thyroidectomized rat, 10 h after T3 treatment. Thus, thyroid hormones have an early and preferential action on the mitochondrial protein synthesizing system and on the inner-membrane enzyme activities.
The circulatory depressant action of papaveretum was demonstrated when the drug was injected accidentally into the radial artery during neuroanaesthesia in the upright (sitting) position. The signs of air embolism were mimicked. The condition reponded promptly to a vasopressor given intravenously. There were no harmful sequelae to the patient's hand.

Serum concentrations of T4 and T3 in 2 year-old Rats were decreased by about 30% compared to 2 month-old animals, but rT3 was similar. Activities of old Rats' liver mitochondria were near those of young thyroidectomized animals. Low circulating T3 partly explains metabolic changes observed during senescence.
