For ecological investigations in natural populations of Blatella germanica a new method of dry incorporation of a porcelain tracer is developed. The quality of this method in contrast with other non radioactive and at present radioactive methods depends on the stable position of the tracer and the possibility of taking different marking substances for individually marking a large number of experimental animals. The identification bases on the previously investigated half-life values. The new method in combination with the recaptivate method is a good possibility to analyse a population of cockroaches.
The abundance and dispersion of a selected genetic homogeneous and isolated population of Blattella germanica was observed by the method of dry incorporation of radioactive porcellain tracer. Under optimal conditions, a medium density of 130 individuals per cubicmetre volume was found. The fluctuations came to 50% from the middle value. The dispersion is unequal and depends as well on the requisites of the room as on the size and the quality of the existing aggregations. An interchange exists between the aggregations. In this respect males are more active than female cockroaches.

The present study describes the regional distribution and cellular localization of angiotensinogen-mRNA in the rat brain as investigated by means of in situ hybridization also in combination with immunocytochemistry for glial fibrillary acidic protein. The angiotensinogen gene expression seemed to be restricted to astroglia and showed marked regional differences. In some areas angiotensinogen-mRNA was present in almost all astrocytes with a strong signal (e.g. hypoglossal nucleus), whereas in other areas the angiotensinogen gene was expressed only in a certain population of glial cells. Some areas like the lateral septum were devoid of any detectable angiotensinogen-mRNA. A semi-quantitative atlas of the regional distribution of brain angiotensinogen-mRNA was obtained by using computer-assisted microdensitometry and revealed considerable rostro-caudal fluctuations of the angiotensinogen-mRNA content of certain regions (e.g. the subfornical organ). Furthermore, a semi-quantitative analysis on the cellular level of angiotensinogen gene expression was performed showing a correlation of the angiotensinogen gene expression to the glia content of the regions examined. It was also demonstrated that the angiotensinogen gene expression had its highest levels in several distinct areas of the brain (e.g. the preoptic region and the hypothalamus), whereas other areas showed only low to moderate levels (e.g. the thalamus). The expression of the angiotensinogen gene in the rat brain was not only restricted to areas involved in cardiovascular and neuroendocrine control, but was also present in functionally different regions. Our data thus indicate that, based on the regional distribution of angiotensinogen-mRNA, angiotensin peptides may have other functions besides participation in cardiovascular and neuroendocrine control.
Of 15 patients with fibromyalgia who were first evaluated for the presence of Axis I psychiatric diagnoses by use of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, 11 completed an open 8-week trial with the novel antidepressant venlafaxine. Six (55%) of 11 completers experienced a > or = 50% reduction of fibromyalgia symptoms. The presence of lifetime psychiatric disorders, particularly depressive and anxiety disorders, predicted a positive response to venlafaxine. These findings suggest that it is important to assess for comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients with fibromyalgia and that venlafaxine may be helpful to some of these patients.
The Barrett's multistage process is characterized histopathologically by progression from Barrett's intestinal metaplasia to Barrett's esophagus with dysplasia and ultimately adenocarcinoma. Understanding the cellular and molecular events in this multistage process may contribute to improved diagnosis and treatment. Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of polyamines. Elevated ODC activity has been found to be associated with progression during Barrett's esophagus, but the regulation of ODC gene expression in the development of Barrett's-associated adenocarcinoma has not been reported. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and timing of ODC mRNA expression in the Barrett's metaplasia-dysplasia-adenocarcinoma sequence. ODC mRNA expression levels, relative to the stably expressed internal reference gene beta-actin, were measured using a quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method (ABI 7700 Sequence Detector System) in 104 specimens from 19 patients with Barrett's esophagus without carcinoma and 22 patients with Barrett's-associated adenocarcinoma. The median ODC mRNA expression levels were significantly increased in Barrett's esophagus tissues compared to matched normal tissues in patients without adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (P = 0.002; Wilcoxon test). A significant progressive increase in ODC mRNA expression was detectable through the stages of the metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence in patients with Barrett's-associated adenocarcinoma (r = 0.719; P < or = 0.001; Spearman's rho test). These findings show that upregulation of ODC mRNA expression is an early event in the development and progression of Barrett's-associated adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, and they suggest that high ODC mRNA expression levels may be a clinically useful biomarker for the detection of occult adenocarcinoma
OBJECTIVE: Infants with gastroschisis (GS) still face severe morbidity. Prenatal closure may prevent gastrointestinal organ damage, but intrauterine GS repair (GSR) has not been established yet. METHODS: In New Zealand White rabbits we developed and compared GS versus GSR: creation of GS was achieved by hysterotomy, right-sided laparotomy of the fetus and pressure on the abdominal wall to provoke evisceration. GSR was accomplished by careful reposition of eviscerated organs and a running suture of the fetal abdominal wall. For study purposes, 18 animals were divided equally into 3 groups: GS, GS with GSR after 2 h, and unmanipulated controls (C). Vitality was assessed by echocardiography. After 5 h all animals were sacrificed. RESULTS: GSR inflicted no increased mortality, because all fetuses survived GS or GS with GSR. All fetuses with GS demonstrated significant evisceration of abdominal organs. In contrast, the abdominal wall of the fetuses from GSR was intact. CONCLUSION: The present animal model demonstrated the technical feasibility and success of an intrauterine repair of GS for the first time. However, further long-term studies (leaving GS and GSR in utero for several days) will be necessary to compare survival rates and intestinal injury, motility or absorption. The clinical application of GSR in utero remains a vision so far.
