Immunologic concepts have facilitated the recognition within the histiocytic lymphoma group of the Rappaport classification of five diagnostic categories of lymphoma (follicular center cell lymphoma large cleaved and large non-cleaved types, immunoblastic sarcoma B cell type, immunoblastic sarcoma T cell type and 'true histiocytic lymphoma'). The first four of these 'large cell lymphomas' are closely related biologically and are difficult to distinguish histologically. This paper purports to examine the morphologic criteria employed in the differential diagnosis of these four large cell lymphomas in an objective manner, utilizing carefully prepared histologic sections from 24 cases of lymphoma that had been subjected to detailed B and T cell characterization by surface marker methods. 18 morphologic criteria were evaluated by four observers independently. The results show that reliable histologic distinctions can be made on histologic grounds in a proportion of cases only and that individual criteria show more overlap within diagnostic criteria than previously recognized. This is attributed in part to the close biologic relationship of these neoplasms. It is also recognized that the morphologic criteria are subtle and that the pathologist should have the advantage of auxiliary techniques--cytochemistry, immunohistology, surface marker techniques--to achieve reliable distinction of functional types within the diffuse histiocytic group of Rappaport.

A method for the chemical determination of vitamin K3 in vitamin premixes and feedstuffs is described. The extraction of the active compound and its conversion into menadione is carried out in the same flask. The extract can be used directly for the HPLC determination with UV detection. In the case of low vitamin K3 levels (less than 2 ppm menadione) the extraction solvent should be replaced by the elution solvent used for the HPLC. The procedure had a detection limit of 0.5 ppm menadione. The relative standard deviation, determined with an 8 ppm feed sample is +/- 6% (n = 9).
The case is reported of a 77-year-old man who died from hepatocellular carcinoma without accompanying cirrhosis, after being treated with a total of 668 g diethyl-stilbestrol over a 12-year period for suspected carcinoma of the prostate. Possible relationships between this treatment and the hepatic cancer are discussed in the light of the relevant literature.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in 500 consecutive patients from medical, oncological and surgical wards showed a 1% incidence of viral esophagitis. The 5 reported cases could not be distinguished either on clinical or on endoscopic grounds from reflux esophagitis. Brush cytology served in all but one case to diagnose viral esophagitis. Identification of the virus was possible in 4 cases (3 herpes simplex, 1 cytomegaly). Viral esophagitis was mainly a complication in severe underlying disease.
Report on a 64-year-old man who presented with ileus and rupture of the ileum due to diffuse ganglioneuromatosis of the small bowel. The patient had a 16-year history of recurrent ileus. In addition, there were clinical and radiographic signs of an inflammatory bowel affection which were interpreted as Crohn's disease, a diagnosis which could not be proven by pathologic examination of the resection specimen. The features of intestinal ganglioneuromatosis and its possible relation to the accompanying inflammation are discussed in the light of the pertinent literature.
The analgesic properties of the muscimol analogue THIP (4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoxazolo[5,4-c]pyridin-3-ol) in laboratory animals were compared with those of baclofen, morphine and muscimol. THIP was active orally and parenterally and resembled muscimol qualitatively in its actions. Quantitatively, THIP and baclofen were 2--3 times less potent than morphine and 5--15 times less potent than muscimol. The analgesic effects of THIP, baclofen and muscimol were not reversed by naloxone or bicuculline.

Cultured hippocampal pyramidal cells responded to field stimulation with a short latency excitation followed by a long-lasting inhibition. This sequence was transformed into a bursting response by bath application of 10(-8) M FK 33-824, 10(-6) M (D-Ala)2(D-Leu)5-enkephalin and 10(-5) M bremazocine. Bremazocine and ethylketocyclazocine stereospecifically blocked the effects of FK 33-824. The results indicate that the excitatory responses were predominantly mediated by mu-receptors.

We report on a 74-year-old man who presented with recurring episodes of asthma. He was admitted in a severe asthmatic state which could not be resolved with the usual bronchodilatatory therapy. An attempt at oro-tracheal intubation failed due to an obstruction in the larynx and the patient died before an emergency tracheotomy could be done. At autopsy a chondroma of the larynx measuring 2.5 x 2.5 x 3 cm was found. It originated from the posterior cricoid cartilage and virtually filled the whole infraglottic space. Chondromas of the larynx are very rare. Dyspnea and hoarseness are the most frequent signs, a stridor is rarely noted. The asthmatic symptoms of our patient are unusual. Morphology, symptomatology, diagnosis and therapy of laryngeal chondromas are discussed and the literature reviewed.
A 40-year-old man with two normally descended testicles and no signs of hormonal anomalies developed a fist-sized extraperitoneal tumor to the left of the urinary bladder. Histologic diagnosis was that of a probably malignant gonadal stromal tumor because of considerable mitotic activity and widespread vascular invasion. Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy showed no metastatic disease, and the patient is well two years after surgery. By use of an immunoperoxidase method we could demonstrate estradiol and testosterone in the tumor cells. The findings in this case are unique in regard to the extratesticular location of the tumor and support the current view that gonadal stromal tumors arise from a primitive cell with a multidirectional potential for differentiation.
