Malnutrition and diarrhoeal diseases are important interrelated health problems of preschool children in the developing countries. For a prospective study to determine the effect of malnutrition on diarrhoeal morbidity 721 children under 5 years, living in two villages near Hyderabad were registered. The children were classified into different nutritional grades based on initial body weights and heights; and diarrhoea morbidity was recorded during the subsequent one year. The aetiology of diarrhoea was determined in a subsample. The incidence of diarrhoea was observed to be about 1.6 episodes/child/year and was similar in children with different nutritional grades. The percentage of episodes leading to severe dehydration was, however, significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in children with grade III malnutrition. The isolation of ETEC was also higher in this group indicating a greater bacterial load in the gut. Although pre-existing malnutrition did not affect the incidence of diarrhoea it seems to have a significant impact on the severity of the disease.
Lysosomal alpha-D-mannosidase of monkey brain existed in two forms. One form of mannosidase was bound to the Ricinus communis agglutinin120 (RCA1)-Sepharose and could be specifically eluted with lactose. The other form did not bind to the RCA1-Sepharose. Both forms of mannosidase could bind to a similar extent to the immobilized brain lysosomal receptor protein. Both the forms were purified to apparent homogeneity. Neutral sugar analysis by GLC showed the presence of glucose, mannose and galactose in the RCA1-Sepharose bindable mannosidase and glucose and mannose in the non-bindable mannosidase. Several other brain lysosomal hydrolases did not bind to the RCA1-Sepharose. The results suggested the existence of only high mannose oligosaccharides in the RCA1 non-bindable mannosidase and both high mannose and complex oligosaccharides in the bindable mannosidase.
A method is described for the purification of neutral alpha-D-mannosidase and its separation from acid alpha-D-mannosidase from monkey brain by utilizing Co2+ chelate affinity chromatography. The neutral enzyme, which selectively bound to the metal-ion chelate column, was elutable by Tris at pH 7.5 and gave over 80-fold purification in a single step with 100% recovery.
Six cooking oils with different levels of unsaturation were each heated at 180 +/- 3 degrees C for 6 hr on each of four consecutive days and cut potatoes were fried in the oils at hourly intervals. Samples of the heated and unheated oils were tested in the Ames mutagenicity assay. None of the oil samples (taken before or after 24 hr heating) showed any mutagenicity in the Ames test with or without metabolic activation.

Histochemical study of the innervation of the heart of the Indian flying fox Pteropus giganteus has been made using Coupland and Holmes' technique for cholinesterase. Distribution of nerve plexuses in the heart wall has been described. Nerve cells, nerve endings and various types of synapses have been reported. Specialized muscle fibres are found to contain less nerve fibres and conduction of the impulse of contraction is reported to take place through muscle fibres.
Gross anatomy and histology of the cardiac conducting system of Gallus domesticus has been studied. Detailed histology of the atrium revealed for the first time, in the avian heart, the presence of three atrial bundles which communicate between the sinuatrial node and the atrioventricular node. Purkinje fibres in the subendocardium of the right atrium are observed. An atrioventricular segment comprising of the posterior end of the interatrial septum and the atrioventricular nodal region has been reported in which the three atrial bundles converge. The role of the atrial bundles in the cardiac contraction has been discussed.
A study on the innervation of the respiratory organs of Calotes versicolor has been made using cholinesterase and silver reduction techniques. The tracheal and bronchial plexuses have been described. A number of nerve terminations along with synapses are reported. ChE activity has been observed on the periphery of the alveoli which is believed to be of importance in controlling the acetylcholine level, acting as a general tissue enzyme to prevent excessive accumulation of acetylcholine. Vascular nerve supply has been found to be largely of vagal origin.
