Automated weighing procedure for toxicological studies on small animals, using a minicomputer.

A compact system was designed for weighing procedures in toxicological studies on small animals that integrated 4 basic functions: data acquistion, record keeping, statistical analysis, and report preparation. An electric balance, a minicomputer, and a typewriter were incorporated into the system. Elimination of clerical work and accelerated flow of information between planning, operation, and evaluation of experiments were found to be the main advantages.

Bilogical and toxicological properties of econazole, a broad-spectrum antimycotic.

The spectrum of activity of 1-(2,4-dichloro-beta-[(p-chlorobenzoyl)oxy]phenethyl)imidazole-nitrate (econazole, R 14827) was tested in vitro on various pathogenic fungi and bacteria, and also in vivo in guinea-pigs and rats experimentally infected with dermatophytes and C. albicans. The in vitro activity spectrum is very broad: the dermatophytes, the yeasts, the dimorphic fungi, the aspergilli, the mycetoma causing agents and the Gram-positive bacteria being most sensitive. Guinea-pigs infected with T. mentagrophytes, M. canis or C. albicans and treated topically or orally with econazole, were cured. In each of these tests the activity of econazole was compared with that of different reference drugs. Vaginal candidiasis in rats was cured after oral administration of econazole. Toxicity and teratogenicity studies in different laboratory animals indicate that econazole is well tolerated.

Efficacy of diclazuril against Eimeria dispersa in turkeys.

Diclazuril, a new anticoccidial drug, was tested for its efficacy against Eimeria dispersa in turkeys. A dose-titration study indicated that diclazuril at dosages of 0.5, 1, and 2 ppm in the feed was highly effective in terms of weight gain and suppression of lesions, abnormal droppings, and oocyst shedding.

Efficacy of diclazuril against turkey coccidiosis in dose-titration studies.

Diclazuril, a new anticoccidial drug, was tested for its efficacy in turkeys against single Eimeria infections. Dose-titration studies indicated that diclazuril at dosages of 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 ppm was highly effective against the major pathogenic species-E. adenoeides, E. gallopavonis, and E. meleagrimitis-in terms of weight gain and suppression of lesions, abnormal droppings, and oocyst shedding.

Efficacy of diclazuril against turkey coccidiosis in a floor-pen experiment.

Diclazuril, a new anticoccidial drug, was tested for its efficacy in turkeys against mixed Eimeria infections. A floor-pen trial indicated that diclazuril at dosages of 0.5 ppm and 1 ppm in the feed was highly effective against the major pathogenic species E. adenoeides, E. gallopavonis, and E. meleagrimitis in suppressing intestinal and cecal lesions and oocyst shedding. Weight gain and feed conversion improved, particularly at 1 ppm.
