[Static changes of the spine in workers in the automobile industry].

In 13 year period of time 28.324 x-ray examinations of spine performed in workers of Jelcz's car-factory revealed a high percentage (22.5%) of vertebral epiphysitis (Scheuermann's Disease) and scolioses (9.95%) among adolescents aged 17-21 years applying for work in the factory. The statistical analysis of this material has shown that vertebral epiphysitis passed by persons at the age below 40 years has contributed to static changes in spine more significantly than the character of work performed. The greatest number of scolioses among workers aged over 40 years was noted in: tinsmiths, pressers and welders--i.e. the jobs exposing the spine to the highest loads. In those professional groups periodical examinations are recommended to detect early symptoms of scolioses.

[Results of the treatment of vascular-induced impotence using PTA].

PTA was employed in 19 patients with impotency caused by vascular disorders. In 16 (84%) of the patients, potency was successfully restored. PTA treatment was applied only to those patients under 50 years of age in whom moderate and limited arteriosclerotic stenoses were diagnosed via DSA. Restitution of potency was recorded after 3 days to 2 weeks after PTA application.

[Acute pulmonary edema at the intensive care unit].

760 patients suffering from acute pulmonary oedema were treated between 1980 and 1986 at the Institute of Anaesthesiology of the Medical Academy in Wroclaw. The radiological image of the pulmonary oedema was sub-divided into three forms (hilar, hilar and perihilar, and hilar with massive plane-shaped infiltrates). In the treatment of acute pulmonary oedema in the intensive-care ward a thorough diagnostic programme is mandatory after the immediately necessary measures have been taken.

Platelet MAO activity, TRH test, and dexamethasone suppression test in depressed patients.

Platelet MAO activity, TRH test and DST results were compared in 23 normal subjects and 13 depressed patients. Patients as a group were older in age, had higher levels of FT4-index and T3-uptake, and lower levels of MAO activity. There was no association between thyroid hormones, including TSH response, and MAO activity. Five patients were DST positive. They showed a higher average age and a higher T3-uptake value than DST negative patients. Serum T4 and MAO activity levels were normal in both groups. These data suggest that MAO activity and TSH are independently regulated in both normal subjects and depressed patients. They also suggest a reduced binding capacity for thyroid hormones in patients with positive DST.

[Long-term results of surgical therapy of rectal carcinoma].

223 rectal carcinoma patients were treated between 1965 and 1985 at the Department of Surgery of the Academy of Medicine at Wrocław in Poland. Radical surgery was performed in 136 patients and a palliative method of 72 patients. Among the 136 radically treated patients, the five-year survival rate was 46.3% and the 10-15 year survival rate 14.7%. Of the 72 patients subjected to palliative surgery, only three survived for five years.

TRH-induced TSH response in healthy volunteers: relationship to psychiatric history.

The authors measured thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone in 32 healthy volunteers who had never sought or received psychiatric treatment. Nine (28%) had a family or personal history of depression or alcoholism. Five of these nine subjects and one of 22 subjects without such a history showed TSH blunting (TSH data were not available for one subject). This difference was statistically highly significant. Although there were sex differences in TSH response, TSH blunting occurred most frequently in men with a family or personal history of depression or alcoholism. The fault may have utility as a marker of past episodes or as a true marker of trait.
