Fluctuations and the energy-optimal control of chaos

The energy-optimal entraining of the dynamics of a periodically driven oscillator, moving it from a chaotic attractor to a coexisting stable limit cycle, is investigated via analysis of fluctuational transitions between the two states. The deterministic optimal control function is identified with the corresponding optimal fluctuational force, which is found by numerical and analog simulations.

Symmetry breaking of fluctuation dynamics by noise color

Activated escape is investigated for systems that are driven by noise whose power spectrum peaks at a finite frequency. Analytic theory and analog and digital experiments show that the system dynamics during escape exhibit a symmetry-breaking transition as the width of the fluctuational spectral peak is varied. For double-well potentials, even a small asymmetry may result in a parametrically large difference of the activation energies for escape from different wells.

Fractal properties of ion channels and diffusion.

We focus our attention on a fractal model recently proposed by Liebovitch to account for the lack of a time scale in ion channel kinetics. We establish a connection between the dwell-time distributions and the correlation time of the ion channel signal, thereby making it possible to derive analytical predictions on the diffusion properties of a random walk constructed from the sum of the current fluctuations of ion channels. With the help of a numerical simulation of the Liebovitch model, it is shown that the Hurst analysis can provide a reliable determination of the standard (or anomalous) diffusion properties. On the basis of results of computer simulation we argue that by applying the Hurst analysis to the experimental distribution of closed times it is possible, in principle, to establish whether the Liebovitch model is valid.
