Effect of estrogen-progestogen hormonal replacement therapy on periurethral and bladder vessels.

This study assessed the effect of hormone replacement therapy using estrogens and/or progestogens on the number of vessels in the proximal and distal urethra, vesicourethral junction and bladder of castrated adult female rats. Forty-five virgin adult rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) castrated for at least 30 days were used. They were assigned to five groups; group I (control) received no medication; the others received via the subcutaneous route, respectively, 17-beta-estradiol (group II), medroxyprogesterone acetate (group III), a maize oil and benzyl acid solution - placebo (group IV) and 17-beta-estradiol combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate (group V), for a minimum of 28 days. Increased vascularization throughout the urinary tract, except in the distal urethra, was found following estrogen replacement alone. In the group that received combined estrogens and progestogens, no increase was found. It was concluded that estrogen replacement in castrated rats significantly increased the number of vessels in the lower urinary tract.

Heterokaryosis in Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici.

Intra-isolate and inter-isolate heterokaryons were synthesized between auxotrophic mutants of Fusarium crown rot, 'purple variant' and the wilt isolates. This is the first report of intra- and inter-isolate heterokaryons in Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici. Conidial ratios determined for several heterokaryons between different mutants of the Fusarium crown rot organism showed that the ratio is constant for each heterokaryon and that the ratio usually is in favour of one of the mutants.

[Leber's disease. Genetic study of a family].

In this paper it is done the genetic study of a large family that segregates the hereditary optical atrophy gene. The modality of the hereditary transmission is the sex-linked recessive form (Leber's form). Five generations were studied, with a total of 134 individuals. Thirteen are affected (12 men: 1 woman). The study of the heredogram allows the observation of the high occurrence of women carriers and the affected men with descendents (2 married men in the heredogram) exhibit normal offspring (22 individuals, being 16 men and 6 women). One affected woman carrier is also observed. Such observations are in accordance with the literature. This study allows one to conclude by the high importance of genetic counselling, considering that the normal women carriers, which occur in great number, segregate the gene to individuals who will manifest the atrophy.

Chemical mutagenesis of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici: non-selected changes in pathogenicity of auxotrophic mutants.

Single and multiple auxotrophic mutants of the Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.lycopersici strains which cause Fusarium crown-rot and Fusarium wilt of tomato were obtained by chemical mutagenesis with nitrous acid, nitrosoguandidine and ethylmethaneulphonate. The mutagenesis and selection procedures, adapted for use with a plant pathogenic fungus, are described. Changes in pathogenicity were observed when the auxotrophs were compared with the wild type but no correlation was observed between changes in pathogenicity and the particular nutritional requirement.
