Cost-performance analysis of cataloging and card production in a medical center library.
The unit cost of cataloging current English language monographs was studies and compared with the cost of purchasing catalog cards from a commercial source. Two hypotheses were proposed: (1) in-library costs for cataloging and card production are higher than those for the purchased-card method; (2) throughput time is faster for the in-library method. In addition, the data can be used to develop an analytical cost-performance model for administrative purposes. The data presented support the hypotheses. The model developed provides a mechanism for arriving at a cost for different levels of service and can be used to measure the performance of other alternative methods of cataloging. Implications for the use of CATLINE are discussed and suggestions for further studies are described.

Cost-performance analysis of TWX-mediated interlibrary loans in a medium-sized medical center library.
The need for a cost-performance analysis of TWX-mediated versus mail-mediated ILL requests is presented. Three hypotheses are proposed: (1) Unit cost for TWX-mediated ILL requests is greater then for mail-mediated ILL requests; (2) Completion time is shorter for TWX-mediated ILL requests than for mail-mediated ILL requests; (3) An analytic model can be developed that can be used to generate administrative data concerning a TWX installation. The data presented support all three hypotheses. It is shown, also, that through the use of this model a library can arrive at a cost for service of TWX versus mail-mediated ILL.

A descriptive analysis of National Library of Medicine-funded medical informatics training programs and the career choices of their graduates.
The initial 13 National Library of Medicine-supported medical informatics training programs and their graduates were studied to determine the program objectives, trainee selection factors, and curriculum components of the programs and the backgrounds and career choices of the trainees. All 13 programs and over 60% of the available population of trainees were studied. The analysis indicated that 1) the major objective was to train individuals in the applications of computer and information science to medicine: 2) the most frequent selection factor was the MD degree; 3) course work in computer science and a research project were the most common curriculum components; 4) 52% of the graduates selected academic careers; and 5) personal reasons most frequently influenced career choices. There is now a baseline of data that can be used in future studies.
